<P>The meron is a special topological object that carries only one-half of the topological charge unit. In condensed matter physics, a spin meron corresponds to one-half of a spin skyrmion. As compared to the many fascinating topological properties of skyrmion materials, little is known of the properties of spin merons especially about their formation. It was confirmed only recently that hedgehog merons could exist in pairs with opposite helicities via a spin flux closure. However, it is unclear whether a single hedgehog meron could ever exist by pairing with another type of meron. Using element-resolved magnetic imaging measurements on epitaxial trilayer disks, we show that a spin meron with a full range of helicity, including the hedgehog meron, can be stabilized by pairing with another vortex meron with a fine tuning of the magnetic coupling between the two merons. Furthermore, the meron divergence is fully controlled by the polarity of the vortex meron, independent of the vortex helicity.</P>

Objective: We investigated the effect of supplementing fertilization medium and/or culture medium with astaxanthin (AST) on the two phases of in vitro fertilization: gamete fertilization and embryo development. Methods: Mouse cumulus-oocyte complexes were divided into four groups with 5 µM AST added to the fertilization medium (group 3, n=300), culture medium (group 2, n=300), or both media (group 4, n=290). No AST was added to the control group (group 1, n=300). Results: The fertilization rate was significantly higher (p<0.001) in the groups using AST supplemented fertilization medium (group 3, 79.0%; group 4, 81.4%) than those without AST (group 1, 56.3%; group 2, 52.3%). The blastocyst rate calculated from the two-cell stage was significantly lower (p<0.001) in the groups using AST-supplemented embryo culture medium (group 2, 58.0%; group 4, 62.3%) than in those without AST (group 1, 82.8%; group 3, 79.8%). The blastocyst rate calculated from the number of inseminated oocytes was highest in group 3 (189/300, 63.0%) and lowest in group 2 (91/300, 30.3%) with statistical significance compared to other groups (p<0.001). There were significantly higher numbers of cells in the inner cell mass and trophectoderm, as well as significantly higher total blastocyst cell counts, in group 3 than in the control group. Conclusion: An increased blastocyst formation rate and high-quality blastocysts were found only in the fertilization medium that had been supplemented with AST. In contrast, AST supplementation of the embryo culture medium was found to impair embryo development.
A Historical Sketch of the Landscape of the Red River Delta

This article is an attempt to stand back and re-imagine the landscape ofthe Red River over the last two millennia. The only static components of the Red River valley and delta are its mountains and geological deposits, everything else has changed over time. By marrying historical records with recent scientific findings on the Red River, this article outlines aspects ofthese changes; including changes to the climate and landscape, the possibility of shifting river courses, the movement of historical trade routes, and the rise of Thang Long–Hanoi.
Continuity or Change?: Prospects for Japan’s Mindanao Peacebuilding Strategy

The paper looks at how Japan’s peacebuilding in Mindanao evolved alongside shifts in Japan’s foreign and security policies and strengthened strategic partnership with the Philippines. Using Kathleen Thelen’s framework of gradual institutional change, the paper argues that Japan’s peacebuilding in Mindanao is characterized as continuity with change. On the one hand, Japan’s post-war policies, which stress the centrality of civilian power and non-military diplomatic tools, will remain in place; Japan’s human security approach to peacebuilding will persist because it is already self-reinforcing and generating “positive feedback.” But, on the other hand, while the key institutional features are retained, Japan’s peacebuilding for human security policy and practice is also evolving. The paper further explores under what conditions it changes and under what conditions it remains the same.
Ni3S2@MWCNTs films for effective counter electrodes of dye-sensitized solar cells

Composite films nickel sulfide (Ni3S2) nanoparticles were grown on multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and in situ coated onto conducting glass substrates by the hydrothermal process at 170 °C. These Ni3S2@MWCNTs films were applied for counter electrodes (CEs) of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In this work, nanostructure, crystalline structure, electrochemical activities and electron-charge transfer resistance of CEs were studied. In addition, the effective surface areas of CEs were analyzed and discussed as well. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) enhancement of up to 7.48%, compared with that of Ni3S2-DSSC, was demonstrated for a Ni3S2@MWCNTs DSSC.
