<P>AtSFT12, an Arabidopsis Qc-SNARE protein, is localized to Golgi organelles and is involved in salt and osmotic stress responses via accumulation of Na (+) in vacuoles. To reduce the detrimental effects of environmental stresses, plants have evolved many defense mechanisms. Here, we identified an Arabidopsis Qc-SNARE gene, AtSFT12, involved in salt and osmotic stress responses using an activation-tagging method. Both activation-tagged plants and overexpressing transgenic plants (OXs) of the AtSFT12 gene were tolerant to high concentrations of NaCl, LiCl, and mannitol, whereas loss-of-function mutants were sensitive to NaCl, LiCl, and mannitol. AtSFT12 transcription increased under NaCl, ABA, cold, and mannitol stresses but not MV treatment. GFP-fusion AtSFT12 protein was juxtaposed with Golgi marker, implying that its function is associated with Golgi-mediated transport. Quantitative measurement of Na(+) using induced coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy revealed that AtSFT12 OXs accumulated significantly more Na(+) than WT plants. In addition, Na(+)-dependent fluorescence analysis of Sodium Green showed comparatively higher Na(+) accumulation in vacuoles of AtSFT12 OX cells than in those of WT plant cells after salt treatments. Taken together, our findings suggest that AtSTF12, a Golgi Qc-SNARE protein, plays an important role in salt and osmotic stress responses and functions in the salt stress response via sequestration of Na(+) in vacuoles.</P>

본 논문은 주기적인 정치 불안정에 노출되어왔던 피지의 소위 ‘쿠데타 문화’를 분석하였다. 즉, 2006년 12월 발생한 쿠데타에 초점을 맞추어 이를 1987년 및 2000년 쿠데타와 대비하였다. 다음으로 피지의 ‘쿠데타 순환’에서 나타난 유사성과 지속성을 추적하였으며, 그것이 여태까지 강조된 상이성만큼이나 중요하다는 점을 제시하였다. 또한 본 연구는 피지가 안정적인 민주질서를 구축하기 위해서는 피지민의 심층에 자리 잡고 있는 오로지 쿠데타만이 민주주의와 법의 지배를 강화할 수 있다는 근거 없는 믿음을 극복해야 한다고 주장한다. This paper explores the so-called coup culture of Fiji (a susceptibility to periodic upheavals and military coups) by focusing on the coup that took place in Fiji in December 2006 and contrasting this to previous coups in the country. It first addresses the main differences between the 2006 coup and those of 1987 and 2000. It then examines some similarities and continuities in Fiji `coup cycle` suggesting that these are just as significant as the much-remarked differences. The paper then reflects on Fiji`s prospects for building a stable democratic order, arguing that one of the hurdles to overcome is a deep seated ambivalence in Fiji which coups have only reinforced about democracy and the rule of law.

<P>Summary: A novel non-metallocene Zr(IV) complex bearing a bianionic form of the ligand 2,6-bis(2-benzimidazolyl)pyridine is synthesized. This Zr complex is an active catalyst for the polymerization of MA via coordination polymerization in the presence of methylaluminoxane MAO. The activity and MWD are increased as the polymerization temperature increases. The maximum activity is observed at Al/Zr molar ratio of 100 and the deactivation is shown above 100, resulting from an inactive bimetallic complex between catalyst and free TMA presented in MAO. Objectives: Nursing has embraced online education to increase its workforce while providing flexible advanced education tonurse professionals. Faculty use virtual simulation and other adaptive learning technologies to enhance learning efficiencyand student outcomes in online courses. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of simulated Electronic HealthRecords (EHRs) on informatics competency in a graduate online informatics course. Methods: A two-group independentmeasures study design was adopted to assess students’ perception of a simulated EHR while comparing differences in informaticscompetencies between an intervention group and a control group. A simulated EHR assignment was provided tostudents in the intervention group, and a paper assignment was provided to those in the control group. The informatics competencyof the students was measured using the Self-Assessment of Informatics Competency Scale for Health Professionals(SICS). Results: Students who were enrolled in a family nurse practitioner program in fall of 2019 participated in this study(n = 39). The students expressed positive perceptions of a simulated EHR experience. The SICS results indicated that studentsin the intervention (simulated EHR) group showed higher informatics competency than those in the control group. Conclusions:The positive results of this study support incorporating simulated EHR exercises in online courses. Higher informaticscompetency in the intervention group implies that the use of simulated EHR facilitated learning of complicated informaticsconcepts.

Objectives: Medically compromised patients often fear required dental surgical procedures that can increase the risk of medical emergency when combined with reduced tolerance for stress. A stress reduction protocol (SRP) helps doctors minimize treatment-related stress and improves patient management with minimum complications. Diabetes and co-morbid hypertension carry 4-fold risk of aggravation of cardiovascular emergencies and 7.2-fold risk of mortality. Diabetic neuropathy can result in difficult diagnosis of myocardial infarction and reduces chances of surviving a myocardial infarction compared with a non-diabetic person. The aim of the study was to assess the feasibility of a protocol for management of patients having both diabetes and hypertension who required minor oral surgery to minimize the rate of cardiovascular emergencies. Materials and Methods: A prospective study was conducted in 140 patients having both diabetes and hypertension who required minor oral surgical procedures. A systematic approachable protocol was designed for management of such patients. Results: Among 140 patients, 6 patients (4.3%) had cardiovascular complications, while 3 patients (1 with syncope and 2 with hypertension) did not require any intervention other than observation. Two patients were managed with aspirin and nitroglycerin, and 1 patient had possible myocardial infarction (overall incidence 0.7%) with chest pain, S-T segment elevation on electrocardiogram, and troponin level of 0.60 ng/mL. Conclusion: The proposed protocol helps to improve management of patients having both diabetes and hypertension. We recommend that patients with uncontrolled diabetes and uncontrolled hypertension and/or patients having history of cardiovascular complication should be treated in a medical facility with a readily available cardiology unit. This facilitates prompt response to emergency and instant implementation of treatment, helping to reduce morbidity and mortality.

<P>AtERF71/HRE2 binds to GCC box or DRE/CRT as transcription activator and plays an important role in root development via root cell expansion regulation. AtERF71/HRE2 transcription factor, a member of the AP2/ERF family, plays a key role in the stress response. GCC box and DRE/CRT, both essential cis-acting elements, have been shown to be recognized by AP2/ERF family transcription factors. However, it remains unclear whether or not AtERF71/HRE2 directly interacts with GCC box and/or DRE/CRT. Here, we showed that AtERF71/HRE2 binds to GCC box and DRE/CRT by electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). Binding of AtERF71/HRE2 to GCC box and DRE/CRT was also detected by fluorescence measurement and surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (BIAcore) experiments. Folding properties of AtERF71/HRE2 proteins were characterized by CD spectroscopy, and AtERF71/HRE2 showed thermal stability as evidenced by two endothermic peaks (T d) at 53 and 65 °C. In addition, AtERF71/HRE2 showed transcriptional activation activity via GCC box and DRE/CRT in Arabidopsis protoplasts. Interestingly, AtERF71/HRE2 OXs showed increased primary root length due to elevated root cell expansion. Our data indicate that AtERF71/HRE2 binds to both GCC box and DRE/CRT, transactivates expression of genes downstream via GCC box or DRE/CRT, and plays an important role in root development through regulation of root cell expansion.</P>
