In the Large Helical Device (LHD), some reactor-oriented experiments, i.e. high beta, high ion temperature, steady state operation, have produced remarkable progress in recent experimental campaigns. By optimizing the rotational transform, an average beta value of 4.3 %, which is the highest on record for helical devices, was achieved. The ICRF sustained steady-state discharges for more than 30 minutes, these were also successfully performed with the aid of the magnetic axis swing technique for the reduction of the heat load to the plasma-facing component. In the discharge, the total input energy to the plasma reached 1.3 GJ, which also established a new record.1

We have constructed three characteristic internship programs which were based on the different aspects of view by the grant in aid from MEXT of Japanese government. The most outstanding program is what we call “Market Internship”, where the students directly approach the market in which the engineering technologies are utilized. Then they must find out the problems and advantages of engineering technologies from the view of consumers. The experience would result in the enhancement of motivation to study the engineering technologies. It would be substantially effective in engineering education curriculums that the engineers of private companies in which university students will get their own jobs in near future could take important roles to conduct them. We believe that this activity would effective in reducing gaps they would feel between before and after getting jobs in practical society, and lowering the ratio of unemployment after getting jobs
Spin-Injection Dynamics and Eects of Spin Relaxation in Self-Assembled Quantum Dots of CdSe

We study the spin injection dynamics and the eects of spin relaxation in self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) of CdSe coupled with a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) layer of ZnMnSe, where spin-polarized excitons can be injected from the DMS into the QDs because of the potential dierence. The degree of circular polarization, P, of excitonic photoluminescence (PL) at 5 T in the coupled QDs shows a rapid increase with increasing delay time after a linearly polarized pulse excitation, indicating the spin-injection dynamics. The P value tends to decay gradually because of the exciton-spin relaxation in the QDs after the spin injection. The spin-polarized excitons in the QD ensemble migrate simultaneously from QDs with higher exciton energies to those with lower exciton energies. This inter-dot transfer of excitons also aects the P value in the lower energy region of the QD-emission band because the excitons lose their spin polarizations due to the spin relaxation in the dots during the migration. The detailed analysis for the exciton-spin transfer is presented in a coupled QD system after spin injection. Nickel (Ni) is a kind of the rare earth resources. Since Ni-containing waste is drained after several plating operations in the factories, the effective recycling technique has been expected to be introduced. An actual magnetic separation technique using HTS bulk magnet generating the strong magnetic field has succeeded in collecting the paramagnetic slurry containing Ni-sulphate coarse crystals which were fabricated from the Ni-plating waste. The Ni compound in the collected slurry was identified as NiSO4/6H2O, showing slight differences in the particle size and magnetic susceptibility between the samples attracted and not-attract to the magnetic pole. This preferential extraction suggests us a novel recycling method of Ni resource because the compound is capable of recycling back to the plating processes as a raw material.

Comparisons of properties between skeletal ryanodine receptor 1 (sRyR1)-heterozygous-mutated and normal types of meat were carried out in pigs using PSE (pale, soft and exudative) meat found during the butchering process. All samples considered to be PSE meat showed irregular running and disorder of the muscle fibers and a wider inter-fiber space upon light microscopic observation. Electron microscopy revealed disintegration, twisting, and disorder of the myofibril arrangement and elimination of the Z line in PSE meat, compared with normal meat. Meat property tests demonstrated greater decreases in water holding capacity, moisture and sarcoplasmic protein, and higher $L^*$ values for the meat color index in PSE meat than in normal meat, but there were no differences in these factors between genetically normal and sRyR1-heterozygous PSE meat. On the other hand, higher $a^*$ and $b^*$ values were observed in sRyR1-heterozygous than in normal PSE meat, and similar alterations to the a* value were observed in terms of the amount of myoglobin and density of the 17-kDa protein band, corresponding to the molecular mass of myoglobin, on SDS-PAGE gels. These results suggest that sRyR1-heterozygous PSE pork contains much more myoglobin than genetically normal PSE meat.

We developed a telescope control system called ASTROS for the VST1 and VST2, which are specially designed radio telescopes to make a survey and have a 60-cm main dish. ASTROS is designed on the distributed intelligence concept and structurized programming. The hardware of the system is composed of several intelligent devices connected with de facto standard interfaces and main control unit is PC. The program is coded in the C language and its structure is object oriented in order to make easy to replace the component devices. ASTROS is now running on two twin telescopes, VST1 and VST2. VST1 is installed at Nobeyama in Japan and VST2 is installed at La Silla in Chile. They are making a galactic plane survey in CO (J=2-1) with 9 arcmin beam semi-automatically.
Spinal Growth Modulation with Use of a Tether in an Immature Porcine Model :
Newton, Peter O,Upasani, Vidyadhar V,Farnsworth, Christine L,Oka, Richard,Chambers, Reid C,Dwek, Jerry,Kim, Jung Ryul,Perry, Andrew,Mahar, Andrew T Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery 2008 Journal of bone and joint surgery Vol.90 No.12
<P>BACKGROUND: Spinal growth modulation by tethering the anterolateral aspect of the spine, as previously demonstrated in a nonscoliotic calf model, may be a viable fusionless treatment method for idiopathic scoliosis. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the radiographic, histologic, and biomechanical results after six and twelve months of spinal growth modulation in a porcine model with a growth rate similar to that of adolescent patients. METHODS: Twelve seven-month-old mini-pigs underwent instrumentation with a vertebral staple-screw construct connected by a polyethylene tether over four consecutive thoracic vertebrae. The spines were harvested after six (n = 6) or twelve months (n = 6) of growth. Monthly radiographs, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans (made after the spines were harvested), histologic findings, and biomechanical findings were evaluated. Analysis of variance was used to compare preoperative, six-month postoperative, and twelve-month postoperative data. RESULTS: Radiographs demonstrated 14 degrees +/- 4 degrees of coronal deformity after six months and 30 degrees +/- 13 degrees after twelve months of growth. Coronal vertebral wedging was observed in all four tethered vertebrae and progressed throughout each animal's survival period. Disc wedging was also created; however, in contrast to the findings associated with vertebral wedging, the tethered side was taller than the untethered side. Magnetic resonance images revealed no evidence of disc degeneration; however, the nucleus pulposus had shifted toward the side of the tethering. Midcoronal undecalcified histologic sections showed intact bone-screw interfaces with no evidence of implant failure or loosening. With the tether cut, stiffness decreased and range of motion increased in lateral bending away from the tether at both time-points (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In this porcine model, mechanical tethering during growth altered spinal morphology in the coronal and sagittal planes, leading to vertebral and disc wedging proportional to the duration of tethering. The resulting concave thickening of the disc in response to the tether was not anticipated and may suggest a capacity for the nucleus pulposus to respond to the compressive loads created by growth against the tether.</P>
