The superconducting permanent current switch (PCS) is an important component to build MRI system This switch uses a theimal and / or magnetic super-to-normal phase tiansition of the superconductor. Unfortunately, in the past it was not designed foi using in line frequency. We made some superconducting power electronics devices operating up to 100 Hz [1]. A NEW TREATMENT SYSTEM FOR ANIMAL WASTE WATER USING MICROORGANISM, SOIL AND VEGETATION

A new treatment system for animal waste water has been developed as an alternative to the activated sludge process. It consists of two treatments; one is operated with 7 tanks, and the other is soil and plant cultivation bed. Aerobic microorganisms are added to the influent water in the tanks where the water is aerated so that the microbes utilize the pollutants, while sedimentation removes the indigestible solids. In the secondary treatment the water, which has already received a primary treatment, is filtered through soil where it also receives treatment by soil organisms. In addition there is transpiration of water and absorption of minerals by plants. In the primary treatment BOD, SS, coliforms (E. coli), TP and total bacteria were removed 79-99%, but COD and TN were removed only 58% and 36%, respectively. In the secondary treatment removal of nutrients proceeded further, and 93-99% of pollutants were removed. The treated waters met the quality standard of discharge water in Japan except for TN, which was in too great a concentration to meet discharge standards. This problem requires further study.
Induction of Detoxifying Enzyme by Sesquiterpenes Present in Inula helenium

Our previous study showed that the methanolic extract of Inula helenium(elecampane) had the potential to in-duce detoxifying enzymes such as quinine reductase (QR) and glutathione S-transferase. In this study we further fractionatedthe methanolic extract into hexane-, dichloromethane-, butanol-, and water-soluble fractions according to polarity. The hexanefraction showed the highest QR-inducing activity and also induced glutathione S-transferase in a dose-dependent manner. Itspotential to induce the reporter activity suggested an antioxidant response element-mediated mechanism of action in the in-duction of phase II detoxifying enzymes. Intraperitoneal injection of the hexane fraction of I. heleniuminto ICR mice causeda significant increase of QR activity in liver, kidney, small intestine, and stomach. Sesquiterpenes, isolated from the hexanefraction, appeared to be major components responsible for QR induction. Among the seven compounds tested in this study,alantolactone, isoalantolactone, and 5.-epoxyalantolactone significantly induced QR activity in both Hepa1c1c7 and BPRc1cells. In conclusion, sesquiterpenes, including alantolactone, isoalantolactone and 5-epoxyalantolactone, present in I. heleniummerit further evaluation as chemopreventive agents.

<P>We investigated the magnetic anisotropy of ultrathin bcc-Fe (001) films with a fcc-Au(001) cover layer, grown onto GaAs (001) (4 times 1) and (2 times 6)/(3 times 6) reconstructed surfaces. The magneto-optical Kerr effect hysteresis loops revealed existence of a strong in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the Fe films grown on both the surfaces. Details of the in-plane uniaxial anisotropy (K<SUB>U</SUB>), cubic anisotropy (K<SUB>C</SUB>), and effective demagnetization field (4piM<SUB>eff</SUB>) were studied by Brillouin light scattering method. We observed a stronger reduction of K<SUB>U</SUB>, K<SUB>C</SUB>, and 4piM<SUB>eff</SUB> in thinner Fe layers (below 1.3 nm) grown on both the surfaces. In the case of Fe films grown on GaAs (4 times 1) surface, anisotropies observed were smaller than that for the (2 times 6)/(3 times 6) surface. This reflects the role of surface structure in determining the magnetic anisotropies.</P>
