Tree species composition and diversity along an altitudinal gradient in moist tropical montane valley slopes of the Garhwal Himalaya, India

        Sumeet Gairola,Chandra M. Sharma,Sunil K. Ghildiyal,Sarvesh Suyal 한국산림과학회 2011 Forest Science And Technology Vol.7 No.3

The study was conducted along an altitudinal gradient (1500 to 2850 m above sea level) in moist tropical montane valley slopes of the Mandal-Chopta area in the Garhwal region of India. Twelve forest types according to the altitude, slope aspect, and species compositions were selected for the study. The aims of the study were to describe and examine the structure and composition of the tree vegetation along an altitudinal gradient, and to compare the results of the present study with the other forests of Uttarakhand Himalaya growing at similar altitudinal range. High values of stem density and species diversity were recorded in mixed broad-leaved forest types growing between 1600 and 2400 m a.s.l., whereas forest types growing at higher altitudes (42400 m a.s.l.) had low species richness and stem density. Tree density (tree ha71) showed positive relationship with species richness and Shannon–Wiener diversity index. Forest types growing at higher altitude (42400 m a.s.l.) showed geometric dominance-diversity curves. The values of stem density and total basal area in most of the forest types were higher than the earlier reported values from other parts of the Uttarakhand Himalaya.

      • Immunohistochemical Profile of Breast Cancer Patients at a Tertiary Care Hospital in New Delhi, India

        Doval, Dinesh Chandra,Sharma, Anila,Sinha, Rupal,Kumar, Kapil,Dewan, Ajay Kumar,Chaturvedi, Harit,Batra, Ullas,Talwar, Vineet,Gupta, Sunil Kumar,Singh, Shailendra,Bhole, Vidula,Mehta, Anurag Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.12

Background: To assess the immunohistochemical expression of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PgR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) neu receptor in breast cancer and their associations with various clinicopathological characteristics. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of women who presented with primary, unilateral breast cancer in the Department of Medical Oncology at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre, Delhi, India during the period from January 2008 to December 2011. Data were retrieved from the medical records of the hospital including both early and locally advanced cancer cases. ER, PgR and HER2neu expression in these patients was assessed and triple negative patients were identified. Associations of triple negative and non-triple negative groups with clinicopathological characteristics were also evaluated. Results: A total of 1,284 women (mean age 52.1 years, 41.9% premenopausal) were included in the analysis. Hormone receptor positivity (ER and/or PgR) was seen in 63.4% patients, while 23.8% of tumors were triple negative. Only 23.0% were HER2 positive. Around 10.0% of tumors were both ER and HER2 positive. ER and PgR positivity was significantly associated with negative HER2 status (p-value <0.0001). Younger age, premenopausal status, higher tumor grade, lymph node negativity, advanced cancer stage, and type of tumor were strongly associated with triple negativity. Significantly, a smaller proportion of women had ductal carcinoma in situ in the triple negative group compared with the non-triple negative group (35.6% versus 60.8%, p-value<0.01). Conclusions: The present analysis is one of the largest studies from India. The majority of the Indian breast cancer patients seen in our hospital present with ER and PgR positive tumors. The triple negative patients tended to be younger, premenopausal, and were associated with higher tumor grades, negative lymph nodes status and lower frequency of ductal carcinoma in situ.

PCOS is considered as common endocrine diseases among the females in their regenerative age. The purpose of the study was to analyze phytochemicals by GC–MS followed by the pharmacological evaluation of Sukumaram Kasayam on PCOS induced rats. GC–MS analysis of Sukumaram Kasayam was accomplish to identify phytoconstituents. Twenty-four female rats were used (n = 6/group) in the study consisting of healthy control (Group-I). The experimental groups were divided into 3 subgroups, including rats with PCOS which received no treatment (Group-II), PCOS group (Group-III and Group-IV) was administered daily dose of Clomifene citrate 200 mg/kg and Sukumaram Kasayam 0.5 ml/kg for 3 weeks, respectively. In all experimental groups, oral dose of 1 mg/kg letrozole for 21 days to induce PCOS. After treatment period, rats were anesthetized, blood sex hormone and lipid profile was carried. The GC–MS analysis identified Butane, 1, 1-diethoxy-3-, (+)-2-Bornanone abundant compound in formulation. The PCOS induced rats were treated with Clomiphene citrate, Sukumaram Kasayam, the testosterone decreased significantly (P < 0.01), progesterone increased significantly (P < 0.01), estradiol increased significantly (P < 0.01), the serum LH decreased (P < 0.05), the FSH levels were decreased significantly (P < 0.01). In case of the lipid profile the result showed that the triglyceride, cholesterol, LDL decreased significantly (P < 0.01), whereas the HDL increased significantly (P < 0.01) in comparison to PCOS control rats. Results concluded that Sukumaram Kasayam has beneficial effect on levels of the testosterone, progesterone, estradiol, LH, and FSH in alleviating the complications of PCOS.

Complex Obstetric Perineal Injury Reconstruction Using Antropyloric Valve Transposition

        Saket Kumar,Noushif Medappil,Sunil Kumar Singh,Abhijit Chandra 대한대장항문학회 2020 Annals of Coloproctolgy Vol.36 No.1

Despite significant advancements in the field of medicine, management of complex obstetric perineal injuries remains a challenge. Although several surgical techniques have been described, no techniques have provided satisfactory long-term results. Recently, a perineal transposed antropyloric valve has been used for anorectal reconstruction in patients with damaged or excised anal sphincters. We describe this technique in the case of complex obstetric perineal trauma with extensive tissue loss, presenting with end stage fecal incontinence. The functional outcome after this procedure was evaluated. The patient tolerated the surgery well, and there were no procedure-related upper gastrointestinal disturbances. Short-term functional outcomes were encouraging. At the 36-month follow-up, the patient’s neoanal resting and squeeze pressures were 50 and 70 mmHg, respectively. The postoperative St. Mark’s incontinence score was 7. Perineal antropyloric valve transposition is feasible and can be successfully applied in the management of end-stage fecal incontinence associated with complex obstetric perineal injury.

Multi-wavelength Study of Blazars Using Variability as a Tool

        Kiran S. Baliyan,Navpreet Kaur,Sunil Chandra,Sameer,Shashikiran Ganesh 한국우주과학회 2016 Journal of Astronomy and Space Sciences Vol.33 No.3

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are too compact to be resolved by any existing optical telescope facility, making it difficult to understand their structure and the emission processes responsible for their huge energy output. However, variability, one of their characteristic properties, provides a tool to probe the inner regions of AGN. Blazars are the best candidates for such a study, and hence a considerable amount of effort is being made to investigate variability in these sources across the electromagnetic spectrum. Here, using the Mt. Abu infrared observatory (MIRO) blazar monitoring program, we present intra-night, inter-night, and long term aspects of the variability in S5 0716+71, 3C66A, and OJ 287. These stars show significant variability on short (a few tens of mins, to a few hours, to a few days) to long term (months to years) timescales. Based on the light travel time argument, the shortest variability timescales (micro-variability) provide upper limits to the size of the emission region. While S5 0716 shows a very high duty cycle of variability (> 80 %), 3C66A shows a much lower intra day variability (IDV) duty cycle (< 20 %). All three show rapid variations within 2.5 to 3.5 hr, which, perhaps, are generated near the vicinity of black holes. Assuming this, estimates of the masses of the black holes are made at ~109, 8×108, and 2.7×109 M⨀ for S5 0716+71, 3C66A, and OJ 287, respectively. Multi-wavelength light-curves for the blazar PKS 1510-089 are discussed to infer the emission processes responsible for the recent flaring episodes in this source.

Aberrant myeloid antigen co-expression is correlated with high percentages of CD34-positive cells among blasts of acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients: an Indian tertiary care center perspective

        Rahul Kumar Sharma,Abhishek Purohit,Venkatesan Somasundaram,Pravas Chandra Mishra,Mrinalini Kotru,Ravi Ranjan,Sunil Kumar,Sudha Sazawal,Hara Prasad Pati,Seema Tyagi,Renu Saxena 대한혈액학회 2014 Blood Research Vol.49 No.4

Background Aberrant myeloid antigen (MA) co-expression and high expression of CD34 antigen on the blasts of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients are independently reported to have a role in pathogenesis and prognosis. This study was conducted to determine whether these two parameters are related. Methods A total of 204 cases of ALL were included in an analysis of blast immunophenotypic data. CD34 expression was categorized as low when less than 50% of blasts were CD34-positive (CD34low) and as high when 50% or more were CD34-positive (CD34high). Results Of 204 cases of ALL, 163 and 41 were of B-cell origin (B-ALL) and T-cell origin (T-ALL), respectively. Of all cases, 132 (64.7%) showed co-expression of MA and among these, 101 (76.51%) were CD34high, while the remaining 31 (23.48%) were CD34low. Of 72 cases without MA co-expression, 25 (34.72%) were CD34high and 47 (67.25%) were CD34low. Furthermore, of 163 cases of B-ALL, 111 showed co-expression of MA and 84 of these were CD34high. Of 52 cases of B-ALL without MA expression, 22 were CD34high. Among 41 cases of T-ALL, 21 co-expressed MA, 17 of which were CD34high. Moreover, all 20 cases of T-ALL without co-expression of MA were CD34low. These differences were statistically significant. Conclusion We observed a strong correlation between aberrant MA expression and CD34high expression on the blasts of ALL. We hypothesize that these different patient subsets may represent unique prognostic characteristics.
