        Analysis of Promoter Elements for Transcriptional Expression of Rat p53 Gene in Regenerating Liver

        We previously found three transcription factor-binding motifs in the rat p53 promoter. They are two recognition motifs of NF1-like protein (NF1-like element 1 : -296~-312, NF1-like element 2:-195~-219) and a bHLH protein binding element (-142~-146). In this study, we investigated the DNA-protein complex formation of the three elements with nuclear extracts from both normal and regenerating liver to find the element involved in the induced transcription of p53. The level of each DNA-protein complex on NF1-like and bHLH motifs was not changed. Instead, a new element located at-264~-284 was detected in the DNase I footprinting assay with regenerating nuclear extract. This element has partial homology to the AP1 consensus motif. However, the competition studies with diverse oligonucleotides suggest that the binding protein is not AP1. An in vitro transcription assay shows that this element is important for the transcriptional activation of the rat p53 promoter. Therefore, for the induced transcription of the rat p53 promoter, the-264~-284 region is required in addition to two NF1-like and one bHLH motif.

      • Efficiency evaluation of functional jacket to reduce work load of repetitive arm movements

        Muscle fatigue caused by improper working posture and excessive force among various industrial accidents can develop into serious diseases. The functional jacket is designed to reduce arm load and support muscle strength by applying dynamic taping, which is known to be effective in reducing muscle load. The effect of reducing upper extremity load and supporting muscle strength was verified by electromyography and subjective evaluation. As a result, it was confirmed that the activity of the brachial muscle and erector spinae muscle was low during fruit picking, and low wrist flexion and low erector spinae muscle activity were found when handling fruit and lifting a fruit basket. Even in the subjective evaluation, it was evaluated as the best in most evaluation items. It is expected that this study can contribute to the improvement of work efficiency for arm use workers.

        A Restructuring of the MELCOR code to Establish the MIDAS Computer Code

        A severe accident analysis code, MIDAS 1.0, has been developed for an easy understanding and model improvement of the MELCOR code, which analyzes severe accidents in a reactor. As the foundation for the MIDAS code, the MELCOR 1.8.4 code was adopted. The source code was then converted into standard FORTAN90, and restructured using a modular data structure based on ‘derived type’ variables and a new ‘dynamic allocation’ scheme. It has become easy to understand the workings of the code, and it is also easy to improve the code. The verification was done by comparing the results of the modified code (MIDAS 1.0) with those of the existing code (MELCOR 1.8.4). It is expected that the code restructuring will accelerate the code’s domestication thanks to a direct understanding of each variable and an easy implementation of modified or newly developed models.

        Uncertainty and Importance Analysis Based on SAUNA System for Severe Accident

        The steam explosion in nuclear power plant, which is one of the severe accident, is found to be greatly affected by initial conditions such as the melt temperature, the water temperature in the cavity. the discharged melt radius, and the discharged melt velocity. In this study, the SAUNA system is suggested, which applies the uncertainty analysis technique, one of the adopted AI methods in severe accident research. For these purpose, the TEXAS code which simulates a steam explosion is used, and a numerical analysis methods such as random sampling technique, statistical distribution and importance analysis are also applied. To analyze the results, the execution results of 200 code results were analyzed. From the results of the analysis using the regression analysis model, it is confirmed to understand the major variables that have a big impact. It shows that the use of the SAUNA system will be a good tool in an uncertainty analysis of severe accidents in nuclear power plants.

      • Word association analysis of children with disabilities

        Purpose: This study aimed to compare the types of response words for stimuli in children with language impairment and normal children through the word association task. Methods: For this study, 60 children with language impairment aged 9–11 years old and 60 normal children of the same language age as them were selected. The list of stimulus words for the word association task consisted of 25 nouns, 6 verbs and 6 adjectives. Results: The research results were as follows. First, it was found that the appearance rate of association words in the form and syntax among the intra-linguistic association was higher in the children with language impairment than in the normal children, and the appearance rate of association words in the meaning and pragmatics was lower than that of the normal children. Second, in children with language impairment, the appearance rate of verb response words was high in the noun stimulus words, and the noun response words appeared high in the verb and adjective stimulus words. Conclusions: In conclusion, compared to the normal children, the form and syntax-oriented syntagmatic associative responses were higher than the semantic-oriented paradigmatic associative responses, indicating that the stimulus and response words were used side by side in sentences.

        A Qualitative Analysis on Facilitating Factors and Conflicting Factors of Learning through Social Media

        본 연구는 소셜 미디어 중 하나인 페이스북을 활용한 학습의 효과를 분석하였다. 대학교교양 수업(2011년 2학기)과 전공 수업(2012년 1학기)에서 페이스북을 활용하여 수업을 시행하였고, 수업은 강의와 그룹 발표가 있는 오프라인과 소셜 미디어를 활용하는 온라인이 병행되는 블렌디드 학습으로 진행되었다. 성찰일지, 인터뷰, 참여관찰의 질적 분석으로 학습 촉진 요인과 저해 요인 도출하였다. 소셜 미디어 활용의 촉진 요인은 즉시적인 연결 증대, 여러 학습 주체와 친밀감 확장, 멀티미디어 중심의 실제적 과제 제시, 단문 댓글 활동을 통한 브레인스토밍 기회 증가, 지속적으로 긍정적인 상호작용 유도, 신기술에 대한 호 기심 유발 등으로 분석되었다. 한편, 학습 저해 요인은 정보 검색, 업로드, 저장, 수정 시 불편함, 미디어간 연동으로 인한 불필요한 정보 소음 증가, 타인에 대한 정보 부족으로 인한 상호작용의 비활성화, 사생활 침해 불편, 책임 회피, 신기술에 대한 낯섦과 거부감 등으로 나타났다. 따라서 교수자는 소셜 미디어를 활용하여 수업을 운영하고자 할 경우 학습의 촉 진 요인과 저해 요인을 고려하여 교수설계 전략을 도출해야 할 것이다. This study aims to analyze the effect of learning using Facebook, one of the social media. After designing and completing the liberal arts(2nd semester in 2011) and major courses(1st semester in 2012) in college using Facebook, the researcher derived the facilitating factors and conflicting factors through an qualitative analysis of students’ learning logs, interviews and participatory classroom observation The classes for the present research was proceeded as a type of blended learning, consisting of offline classroom learning with lectures and group presentations, and online learning using social media. In this research facilitating factors of learning through social media offers to increase immediate connection, to identify extended intimacy, to suggest multimedia based practical tasks, to provide more opportunity brain storming through text and feedback message, consistently to facilitate positive interaction, to stimulate curiosity about new technology. On the other hands, conflicting factors have included in inconvenience of searching, uploading, saving, and editing the information, increase in unnecessary information noise from linkage between media, deactivation in interaction with a lack of information of other person, a feeling of discomfort from privacy infringement, avoidance of responsibility, unfamiliarity and resistance toward the new technology. The result of this study may contribute to instructional design of learning through social media

      • The Case Study on the Applicability of Online Feedback in English Writing Class

        본 연구는 대학영어 작문수업에서 개별적으로 제시된 온라인 피드백이 학습자의 인지적 및 정서적 요인에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지에 대해 조사한 실행연구이다. 연구 대상은 작문수업을 수강한 대학생 총 41명이다. 연구절차는 연구참여자가 다섯 가지 장르 (free writing, cover letter, curriculum vitae, TOEFL, summary)의 영작문을 배우고 이에 대한 피드백을 온라인 시스템을 통해 개별적으로 받았다. 실험 결과 대부분의 학습자들은 온라인 피드백이 심리적인 측면에서 안정감이 있다고 응답했으며 온라인 피드백의 강점으로는 신속, 정확, 기록 누적이 있었다. 흥미로운 결과로는 성적 상위 10% 이내의 학습자들이 온라인 피드백을 선호하는 것이었다. 그리고 오프라인 피드백을 선호하는 학습자들은 교수와 동료 사이의 직접적인 소통을 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과는 체계적인 일대일 온라인 수업은 학습자들의 정서적인 요인과 인지능력 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 해석된다. The main aim of the present paper is to investigate the effects of individual online feedback on learners’ cognitive and emotional factors. The data were collected from 41 college students who had enrolled in English writing course throughout two semesters. The participants completed five genres of English writing (free writing, cover letter, curriculum vitae, TOEFL, summary) and received online feedback individually. The result of the study demonstrated that the learners preferred online feedback because it provided emotional comforts. Furthermore, other merits of online feedback that were mentioned included promptness, accuracy and record. In addition, 10% high ranking students showed strong preference toward online feedback and this was an interesting finding. Those who preferred offline feedback placed greater emphasis on interactions with professors and peers, and this is why they showed stronger inclination toward offline feedback rather than online feedback. The results of the present study can be interpreted in the following manner: a systematic individual online feedback can play a positive role in learners’ affective and cognitive factors.
