Jo, Seong-Chun,Nam, Ki-Chang,Min, Byoung-Rok,Ahn, Dong-Uk,Cho, Sung-Hwan,Park, Woo-Po,Lee, Seung-Cheol Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2006 International journal of food science & technology Vol.41 No.suppl1
<P>Summary</P><P>The antioxidant properties of methanolic extracts from the fruit of <I>Prunus mume</I> were determined in chicken breast meat systems. When <I>P. mume</I> extract (PM) was added to chicken breast meat, 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) value at day 3 was decreased by about 45% of the control. PM did not affect colour of chicken meat compared with the control. The amounts of volatile aldehydes and hydrocarbons were significantly decreased by the addition of PM. Especially, hexanal was the most predominant volatile compound in the control taking up almost more than 50% of the total volatiles and PM reduced the amount into 26% of the control meat at 3 days.</P>

<P>Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) based on segmented poly(ether urethane) (SPEU) and lithium perchlorate or magnesium perchlorate (LiClO4 or Mg(ClO4)2) were prepared. By analyzing the Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum of the SPE, it was confirmed that the interaction of the magnesium ion with the oxygen of the polyether chain was stronger than that of the lithium ion. The highest ionic conductivities of 1.5×10−5 and 4.5×10−6 S cm−1 were obtained at room temperature for the SPEs containing LiClO4 and Mg(ClO4)2, respectively. The results of linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) show that an SPE consisting of SPEU and magnesium salt has good electrochemical stability up to the working voltage of 1.9 V at [O]/[Mg2+]=50.</P>

Technetium-labeled phosphate bone scan was shown to detect bone fractures and bone metastasis in early stage than general radiographs. Therefore, bone scan has become one of the most frequently performed nuclear medicine imaging examination. However, non-osseous radiopharmaceutical uptake on the bone scan are unusual findings. We report a case of diffuse splenic absorption of Tc-99m dicarboxypropane diphosphonate in patients who undergo liver transplantation.

<P>The purpose of this study was to investigate the large-scale characteristic molecular signature of Müllerian inhibiting substance (MIS) in human ovarian cancer cells through expression genomics. To understand the comprehensive molecular mechanisms by which MIS inhibits ovarian cancer cell growth, we identified the large-scale characteristic molecular changes elicited by MIS in the human ovarian cancer cell line OVCAR-8, using DNA microarray analysis. Combined serial gene expression analysis from 0 to 96 h after MIS treatment of OVCAR-8 cells resulted in 759 genes which showed at least a 2-fold change in overexpression or underexpression compared to non-treatment groups. Of the 759 outlier genes, 498 genes were mapped to known biological cellular processes, and the resultant major pathways included metabolism, signal transduction, cell growth and apoptosis. Among these pathways, 68 genetic elements were dissected as cell cycle-related genes induced by MIS. Although cellular phenotypic changes by MIS were observed after 24 h of treatment, the characteristic large-scale molecular changes were observed from 48 to 96 h of exposure to MIS. This finding may imply that the suppressive role of MIS on ovarian cancer cells could be cumulative in that the metabolic disturbance of MIS is followed by arrest at the G1/S cell cycle checkpoint. We suggest 759 outlier genes comprise the characteristic molecular signature of MIS, which may be responsible for the suppressive effect on OVCAR-8 cells. Although the precise biological mechanisms underlying these outlier genes should be validated, the genetic elements described herein provide promising therapeutic interventions for ovarian cancer.</P>

<P><I>Background/Aim:</I> Macrophages have been thought to play a role in renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis; recent reports have demonstrated an antifibrotic effect of macrophages in late-stage renal fibrosis. Liposome-encapsulated clodronate (LC) produces a selective and systemic depletion of phagocytic macrophages in vivo. To study the role of initial infiltrating macrophages in renal fibrosis, we compared the effects of pretreatment with LC and a liposome vehicle for control of the severity of renal fibrosis in a unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) rat model. <I>Methods:</I> One day after a single intravenous injection of LC or liposome vehicle, the rats underwent UUO. Following 1, 5, and 14 days, the kidneys were examined to evaluate macrophage infiltration and renal fibrosis. <I>Results:</I> LC depleted macrophages systemically and reduced renal fibrosis associated with UUO; this beneficial effect was accompanied by a decrease of transforming growth factor beta mRNA expression. The osteopontin expression was also reduced by pretreatment with LC. <I>Conclusion:</I> Initial interstitial infiltration of macrophages contributes to tubulointerstitial fibrosis in UUO.</P><P>Copyright © 2007 S. Effect of chemical oxidizer on material removal rate in electrochemical oxidation assisted machining
Nam, Eunseok,Jo, Hyunho,Min, Jaehong,Lee, Sang Jo,Min, Byung-Kwon Elsevier 2018 Journal of materials processing technology Vol.258 No.-
<P>Mechanical machining of brittle material is difficult due to generation of fracture or cracks on machined surfaces. Glassy carbon (GC) is a brittle carbon material having outstanding mechanical and chemical characteristics making it suitable for use in glass molds. However, brittleness of GC makes its machining complicated and difficult. In order to fabricate GC surfaces with minimum cracks, hybrid machining processes utilizing electrochemical oxidation have been proposed. In the present study, a new, mixed acidic electrolyte incorporating a chemical oxidizer was utilized to improve the material removal rate of electrochemical oxidation assisted machining. Machining experiments were conducted to evaluate and to confirm the effect of the oxidizer-mixed electrolyte on material removal.</P>

Objective: To investigate the relationship between reduced glutathione (GSH), a key molecule of the antioxidant defense system in the blood, and glutathione reductase (GR), which reduces oxidized glutathione (glutathione disulfide [GSSG]) to GSH and maintains the redox balance, with the prevalence of Alzheimer’s dementia and cognitive decline. Methods: In all, 20 participants with Alzheimer’s dementia who completed the third follow-up clinical evaluation over 6 years were selected, and 20 participants with normal cognition were selected after age and sex matching. The GSH and GR concentrations were the independent variables. Clinical diagnosis and neurocognitive test scores were the dependent variables indicating cognitive status. Results: The higher the level of GR, the greater the possibility of having normal cognition than of developing Alzheimer’s dementia. Additionally, the higher the level of GR, the higher the neurocognitive test scores. However, this association was not significant for GSH. After 6 years, the conversion rate from normal cognition to cognitive impairment was significantly higher in the lower 50th percentile of the GR group than in the upper 50th percentile. Conclusion: The higher the GR, the lower the prevalence of Alzheimer’s dementia and incidence of cognitive impairment and the higher the cognitive test scores. Therefore, GR is a potential protective biomarker against Alzheimer’s dementia and cognitive decline.
