Background: During beating heart surgery, the accuracy of cardiac output (CO) measurement techniques may be influenced by several factors. This study was conducted to analyze the clinical agreement among stat CO mode (SCO), continuous CO mode (CCO), arterial pressure waveform-based CO estimation (APCO), and transesophageal Doppler ultrasound technique (UCCO) according to the vessel anastomosis sites. Methods: This study was prospectively performed in 25 patients who would be undergoing elective OPCAB. Hemodynamic variables were recorded at the following time points: during left anterior descending (LAD) anastomosis at 1 min and 5 min; during obtuse marginal (OM) anastomosis at 1 min and 5 min: and during right coronary artery (RCA) anastomosis at 1 min and 5 min. The variables measured including the SCO, CCO, APCO, and UCCO. Results: CO measurement techniques showed different correlations according to vessel anastomosis site. However, the percent error observed was higher than the value of 30% postulated by the criteria of Critchley and Critchley during all study periods for all CO measurement techniques. Conclusions: In the beating heart procedure, SCO, CCO and APCO showed different correlations according to the vessel anastomosis sites and did not agree with UCCO. CO values from the various measurement techniques should be interpreted with caution during OPCAB. Purpose: To evaluate the effects of posterior subtenon triamcinolone acetonide injection on refractory diabeticmacular edema (DME) after intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) injection failure. Methods: Patients with DME and central subfield thickness (CST) >300 μm who did not respond to IVB injectionswere retrospectively included. Specifically, we enrolled patients who were diagnosed with refractoryDME and who experienced an increase in CST after 1 to 2 IVB injections or no decrease after ≥3 consecutiveIVB injections. One clinician injected 20 mg of triamcinolone acetonide into the posterior subtenon space. Allpatients received ophthalmic examinations at baseline and at 2, 4, and 6 months post-baseline. Examinationsincluded Snellen visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Results: Forty eyes of 34 patients were included. The average baseline CST was 476 μm. The average CSTdecreased to 368 μm at 2 months, 374 μm at 4 months, and 427 μm at 6 months (p < 0.001 for all results, Wilcoxonsigned-rank test). The average intraocular pressure increased from 15.50 to 16.92 mmHg at 2 monthsbut decreased to 16.30 mmHg at 4 months and 15.65 mmHg at 6 months. Logarithm of the minimum angle ofresolution visual acuity improved from 0.56 to 0.50 at 2 months (p = 0.023), 0.50 at 4 months (p = 0.083), and0.48 at 6 months (p = 0.133, Wilcoxon signed-rank test). No complications were detected. Conclusions: Posterior subtenon triamcinolone acetonide is an effective and safe treatment for reducing CSTin DME refractory to IVB.
New Read Schemes Using Boosted Channel Potential of Adjacent Bit-Line Strings in nand Flash Memory

<P>New schemes of read operation using boosted channel potential of adjacent bit-line (BL) strings are proposed for improving on-state current of a cell string in nand Flash memory. The channel resistance of pass cells in a cell string under read operation is decreased by the electric field due to the boosted channel potential of adjacent BL strings, which increases on-state current of the cell string. Proposed schemes give much smaller read disturbance compared with conventional ones because the boosted channel potential of unselected BL strings prevents soft programming in cells of the unselected BL strings. It was also shown that new read operation of #2 scheme leads to suppress the background pattern dependence by ~58%, as compared with the conventional read operation scheme.</P>

<P>The trap density (N<SUB>t</SUB>) in nitride storage layer of 3-D NAND flash memory cells with tube-type channel structure is extracted. To extract N<SUB>t</SUB> profile in the nitride layer, retention characteristics, and ac-transconductance (g<SUB>m</SUB>) method are used, and equations are derived in cylindrical coordinate. The N<SUB>t</SUB> profile at E - E<SUB>T</SUB> smaller than 1 eV is extracted using retention characteristics of the cells measured at high temperature. The peak value of extracted N<SUB>t</SUB> is ~1 × 1019 cm<SUP>-3</SUP> eV<SUP>-1</SUP> at a E<SUB>C</SUB> - E<SUB>T</SUB> of 0.93 eV. AC-g<SUB>m</SUB> method is used to profile the N<SUB>t</SUB> in E - E<SUB>T</SUB> higher than 1 eV. Extracted N<SUB>t</SUB> profile shows a reasonable continuity between both approaches and looks like a Gaussian function.</P>

<P>The position dependence of threshold-voltage change (ΔV<SUB>th</SUB>) in floating-gate NAND Flash cell strings due to random telegraph noise was characterized. It was found that the cumulative distribution of ΔV<SUB>th</SUB>'s measured from 100 cell devices at word line 31 (WL31) is broader than that at WL0 due to smaller transconductance (G<SUB>m</SUB>). As the position of a read cell in the string is changed from WL0 to WL31, maximum G<SUB>m</SUB> decreases by ~50% since the equivalent source resistance (R<SUB>s</SUB>) of the read cell increases. Decreasing G<SUB>m</SUB> makes the slope of the I<SUB>read</SUB> - V<SUB>read</SUB> curve low, which increases ΔV<SUB>th</SUB> at the same noise current fluctuation. It was also shown that the G<SUB>m</SUB> (finally, ΔV<SUB>th</SUB>) of a read cell can be changed by controlling the pass bias since the pass bias changes the channel resistance (≈ R<SUB>s</SUB>) of the pass cells.</P>

<P>Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, is commonly used for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disorders including atherosclerosis. However, the mechanisms responsible for the vasoprotective effects of Danshen remain largely unknown. Salvianolic acid B (Sal B) represents one of the most bioactive compounds that can be extracted from the water-soluble fraction of Danshen. We investigated the effects of Danshen and Sal B on the inflammatory response in murine macrophages. Danshen and Sal B both induced the expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production and inducible NO synthase (iNOS) expression in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW 264.7 cells. Inhibition of HO activity using Sn-protoporphyrin-IX (SnPP) abolished the inhibitory effect of Sal B on NO production and iNOS expression. Sal B increased macrophage arginase activity in a dose-dependent manner and diminished LPS-inducible tumor necrosis factor-관 production. These effects were also reversed by SnPP. These data suggest that HO-1 expression plays an intermediary role in the anti-inflammatory effects of Sal B. In contrast to the observations in macrophages, Sal B dose-dependently inhibited arginase activity in murine liver, kidney, and vascular tissue. Furthermore, Sal B increased NO production in isolated mouse aortas through the inhibition of arginase activity and reduction of reactive oxygen species production. We conclude that Sal B improves vascular function by inhibiting inflammatory responses and promoting endothelium-dependent vasodilation. Taken together, we suggest that Sal B may represent a potent candidate therapeutic for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases associated with endothelial dysfunction.</P>
Genome-Wide Response of Deinococcus radiodurans on Cadmium Toxicity

Deinococcus radiodurans is extremely resistant to various genotoxic conditions and chemicals. In this study, we characterized the effect of a sublethal concentration (100 μM) of cadmium (Cd) on D. radiodurans using a whole-genome DNA microarray. Time-course global gene expression profiling showed that 1,505 genes out of 3,116 total ORFs were differentially expressed more than 2-fold in response to Cd treatment for at least one timepoint. The majority of the upregulated genes are related to iron uptake, cysteine biosynthesis, protein disulfide stress, and various types of DNA repair systems. The enhanced upregulation of genes involved in cysteine biosynthesis and disulfide stress indicate that Cd has a high affinity for sulfur compounds. Provocation of iron deficiency and growth resumption of Cd-treated cells by iron supplementation also indicates that CdS forms in iron-sulfur-containing proteins such as the [Fe-S] cluster. Induction of base excision, mismatch, and recombinational repair systems indicates that various types of DNA damage, especially base excision, were enhanced by Cd. Exposure to sublethal Cd stress reduces the growth rate, and many of the downregulated genes are related to cell growth, including biosynthesis of cell membrane, translation, and transcription. The differential expression of 52 regulatory genes suggests a dynamic operation of complex regulatory networks by Cd-induced stress. These results demonstrate the effect of Cd exposure on D. radiodurans and how the related genes are expressed by this stress.
