The reactive wetting behaviors of molten Zn–Al–Mg alloys on MnO- and amorphous (a-) SiO2-covered steel sheets wereinvestigated by the sessile drop method, as a function of the Al and Mg contents in the alloys. The sessile drop tests werecarried out at 460 °C and the variation in the contact angles (θc) of alloys containing 0.2–2.5 wt% Al and 0–3.0 wt% Mg wasmonitored for 20 s. For all the alloys, the MnO-covered steel substrate exhibited reactive wetting whereas the a-SiO2-coveredsteel exhibited nonreactive, nonwetting (θc > 90°) behavior. The MnO layer was rapidly removed by Al and Mg contained inthe alloys. The wetting of the MnO-covered steel sheet significantly improved upon increasing the Mg content but decreasedupon increasing the Al content, indicating that the surface tension of the alloy droplet is the main factor controlling its wettability. Although the reactions of Al and Mg in molten alloys with the a-SiO2 layer were found to be sluggish, the wettabilityof Zn–Al–Mg alloys on the a-SiO2 layer improved upon increasing the Al and Mg contents. These results suggest that thewetting of advanced high-strength steel sheets, the surface oxide layer of which consists of a mixture of MnO and SiO2,withZn–Al–Mg alloys could be most effectively improved by increasing the Mg content of the alloys.
pH-Sensitivity Control of PEG-Poly(${\beta}$-amino ester) Block Copolymer Micelle

Poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (PEG)-poly(${\beta}$-amino ester) (PAE) block copolymers were synthesized using a Michael-type step polymerization, and the construction of pH-sensitive polymeric micelles (PM) investigated. The ${\beta}$-amino ester block of the block copolymers functioned as a pH-sensitive moiety as well as a hydrophobic block in relation to the ionization of PAE, while PEG acted as a hydrophilic block, regardless of ionization. The synthesized polymers were characterized using $^1H-NMR$, with their molecular weights measured using gel permeation chromatography. The $pK_b$ values of the pH-sensitive polymers were measured using a titration method. The pH-sensitivity and critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the block copolymers in PBS solution were estimated using fluorescence spectroscopy. The pH dependent micellization behaviors with various bisacrylate esters varied within a narrow pH range. The critical micelle concentration at pH 7.4 decreased from 0.032 to 0.004 mg/mL on increasing the number of methyl group in the bisacrylate from 4 to 10. Also, the particle size of the block copolymer micelles was determined using dynamic light scattering (DLS). The DLS results revealed the micelles had an average size below 100 nm. These pH-sensitive polymeric micelles may be good carriers for the delivery of an anticancer drug.

To compare the quality of manufactured goods distributed in the domestic markets, 6 isolates of Dongchongxiacao products, namely, 4 Paecilomyces tenuipes specimens (J2P, 901A, 901B, and 901C), 1 Cordyceps militaris specimen (901D), and 1 Cordyceps sinensis specimen (CI-1), were analyzed for their physicochemical properties and sequence-structure relationships. P. tenuipes (J2P), a kind of Dongchongxiacao, was successfully inoculated on silkworms by percutaneous infection of Rural Development AdminstraionNam et al., 1999); fruiting bodies were then formed on the complete surface of the pupa. Since P. tenuipes (J2P) from silkworm larva was also proved to have remarkable pharmacological activities, it has been produced in bulk and has been successfully sold to buyers in the Korean market. Additionally, imitation products such as 901A, 901B, 901C, 901D, and CI-1 were sold simultaneously, resulting in deterioration of product quality. This research focuses on establishing quality standards to discriminate between the original and imitation products circulating in the market. The products obtained for the experiments included J2P, 901A, 901B, 901C, 901D, and CI-1; proximate analysis was performed for these products. The hosts and methods of conidia inoculation for proliferation of mycelia differed among the products. P. tenuipes (J2P) was proliferated in live silkworm larvae, and dead silkworm pupae were used to produce 901A, 901B, and 901C. On the other hand, 901D was produced on hulled rice medium. Quality analysis of C. sinensis revealed that CI-1, which was imported from China, smelled bad and proved to be a counterfeit with the fruiting body glued to the insect by twigs. The results of the proximate analysis of 901A, 901B, 901C, and 901D were similar to those of J2P with respect to the moisture content. Otherwise, J2P contained higher crude protein than 901A, 901B, 901C, and 901D, but contained very low fat. C. militaris (901D) and C. sinensis (CI-1) had low crude protein content-12.79% and 9.78% respectively-as compared to that of J2P, which was 62.38%. In contrast to the crude ash content of 6.4% in J2P, the crude ash content of CI-1 was 18.51% and this specimen was found to contain many impurities. phylogenetic analysis of P. tenuipes revealed that the sequence similarity of J2P, 901B, and 901C was in the range of 92.3~92.7%. Additionally, differences in the sequences were found at the positions 65 bp, 436 bp, 441 bp, 463 bp, etc.

Objective : Anterior odontoid screw fixation is a safe and effective method for the treatment of odontoid fractures. The surgical technique is recommended for perforation of the apical cortex of the dens by the lag screw. However, overpenetration of the apical cortex may lead to potentially serious complications such as damages of adjacent vascular and neural structures. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scan to evaluate the safe margin beyond dens tip to ventral dura for anterior odontoid screw fixation. Methods : We retrospectively analyzed the three-dimensional CT scans of the cervical spines in 55 consecutive patients at our trauma center. The patients included 38 males and 17 females aged between 22 and 73 years (mean age${\pm}$standard deviation, $45.8{\pm}14.2years$). Using sagittal images of 3-dimensional CT scan, the safe margins beyond dens tip to ventral dura as well as the appropriate screw length were measured. Results : The mean width of the apical dens tip was $9.6{\pm}1.1mm$. The mean lengths from the screw entry point to the apical dens tip and posterior end of dens tip were $39.2{\pm}2.6mm$ and $36.6{\pm}2.4mm$. The safe margin beyond apical dens tip to ventral dura was $7.7{\pm}1.7mm$. However, the safe margin beyond the posterior end of dens tip to ventral dura was decreased to $2.1{\pm}3.2mm$, which was statistically significant (p<0.01). There were no significant differences of safe margins beyond dens tip to ventral dura with patient gender and age. Conclusion : Extension by several millimeters beyond the dens tip is safe, if the trajectory of anterior odontoid screw is targeted at the apical dens tip. However, if the trajectory of the screw is targeted to the posterior end of dens tip, extension beyond dens tip may lead to damage immediately adjacent to the vental dura mater.

Immunoglobulin G subclass deficiency in adult patients with obstructive lung diseases

Background: Immunoglobulin G subclass deficiency (IgGSCD) is a relative common primary immunodeifiency disease in Korean adults and the association of obstructive lung diseases with disturbances in IgG subclasses levels has been recognized. However, there has been controversy of a true biological significance of IgGSCD in patients with chronic respiratory diseases. Objective: A retrospective chart review was conducted to characterize the clinical features of IgGSCD in patients with chronic respiratory diseases. Subjects and methods: We reviewed the charts of 86 adult patients with bronchial asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease attending our clinics and having IgGSCD from 2001 January to 2012 December. Subjects, classified according to the 10 warning signs by the Jeffrey Modell Foundation, were divided into the two groups: group I (n=11) met the criteria: and group II (n=61) were without recurrent infections. Results: A total of 72 patients were enrolled after exclusion of 14 patients receiving concomitant immunosuppressant therapies. The male to female ratio was similar (35:37) and mean age was 62.88±15.34 years with a range of 17 to 87. Mean preFEV1% was 67.57±27.57% at diagnosis of obstructive lung diseases. The major underlying diseases were bronchiectasis (n=23), history of tuberculosis (n=20), cardiovascular disease (n=11) and diabetes (n=8). Isolated IgG3 deficiency is the most common subclass deficiency (n=52, 72.2%), followed by combined with IgG3 and other types (n=11, 15.2%) and isolated IgG4 (n=6, 8.33%). The annual numbers of antibiotics course and the number of hospitalization related to infectious causes were significantly higher in group I than group II (p<0.0001 and p=0.012, respectively). In both groups, the most common infectious disease was pneumonia, followed by rhinosinusitis, zoster, otitis media and urinary tract infection. Conclusion: IgG3 subclass deficiency was the most common type and lower levels of IgG subclasses were associated with an increased susceptibility to respiratory infection in adult patients with obstructive lung diseases.

<P>We demonstrated the generation of 4.2 PW laser pulses at 0.1 Hz from a chirped-pulse amplification Ti:sapphire laser. The cross-polarized wave generation and the optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification stages were installed for the prevention of the gain narrowing and for the compensation of the spectral narrowing in the amplifiers, obtaining the spectral width of amplified laser pulses of 84 nm (FWHM), and enhancing the temporal contrast. The amplified laser pulses of 112 J after the final booster amplifier were compressed to the pulses with 83 J at 19.4 fs with a shot-to-shot energy stability of 1.5% (RMS). This 4.2 PW laser will be a workhorse for exploring high field science. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America</P>
