<P>Cholangiocarcinoma (CC) is a malignant epithelium neoplasm that originates from the bile epithelium and for which there are few therapeutic strategies. The mTOR pathway involved in many cellular processes was reported to be up-regulated in various cancers. We investigated the activation of the AKT/mTOR pathway in CC cell lines with different degrees of dedifferentiation and found that rapamycin could suppress the motility and the peritoneal dissemination of sarcomatoid SCK cells. Inhibition of the mTOR pathway with rapamycin decreased significantly the number of tumor nodules and prolonged the survival rates of nude mice inoculated with sarcomatoid CC cells. Prolonged treatments with rapamycin were found to disrupt the mTORC2 assembly and to reduce the phosphorylation of STAT3 at Ser 727. Rapamycin decreased both mRNA and protein levels of MMP2 and Twist1, which are regulated by STAT3 and associated with cancer metastasis. The overexpression of STAT3 S727A lacking the phosphorylation site resulted in significantly less sensitivity to rapamycin than the overexpression of STAT3 WT. Taken together, our results suggest that rapamycin could suppress the motility of sarcomatoid CC by down-regulating p-STAT3 (S727) through the impairment of mTORC2 assembly.</P>
Study on Fiber Laser Welding Conditions for the Fabrication of a Nuclear Fuel Rod

To verify the performance of nuclear fuel, a test rig needs to be fabricated to place the nuclear fuel and carry out irradiation tests. Welding is one of the most frequently used processes in fabricating a test rig, and a fiber laser welding system that enables assembling the components with various volumes has been developed in this study. A case study was then carried out for a nuclear fuel rod made of Zircaloy-4 by changing the process variables such as the focal length, frequency of laser pulse, peak laser power, and shield gas. From the case studies, a suitable welding condition with which a fuel rod can be completely welded regardless of the shield gas (He or Ar) should be achieved. By inspection of SEM and an immersion test, it was verified that Ar is useful as a shield gas in fabricating a nuclear fuel rod with a fiber laser welding system.
Effect of intravenous lipid emulsion in patients with acute glyphosate intoxication*

<P><I>Background.</I> Although glyphosate intoxication has been considered minimally toxic in animals, severe toxicity has been observed in humans due to surfactant. We aimed to examine the potential therapeutic effects of intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) on the patients with acute glyphosate intoxication. <I>Methods.</I> This study enrolled 64 glyphosate-intoxicated patients with allocation to two groups: those treated with ILE (ILE group, <I>n</I> = 22), and control patients treated with only supportive (conservative) care. Control patients were selected by matching for the amount ingested and time since ingestion. Twenty-two control patients were separately selected from the 42 patients receiving supportive care only. In ILE group, 20% lipid emulsion product was injected intravenously at the rate of 20 mL/h for the patients who ingested less than 100 ml of glyphosate. In the patients who ingested more than 100 ml of glyphosate, the loading dose was 500 ml for 2-3 h according to the status of the patients, followed by a maintenance dose of 1000 ml for the next 24 h. <I>Results.</I> Thirteen patients received high dose of ILE because the ingestion amount was more than 100 ml. None of the ILE group suffered from the complication of hypotension, while approximately 41% of the control group developed the complication. Additionally, arrhythmia was not observed in the ILE group. The incidence of mental change, respiratory failure, and acute kidney injury was similar between the two groups. <I>Conclusions.</I> ILE administration was associated with lower incidence of hypotension and arrhythmia in patients with acute glyphosate intoxication. ILE administration seems to be an effective treatment modality in patients who ingested sufficient amount of glyphosate herbicide that is expected to bring about significant toxicity.</P>

This paper proposes the algorithm for forward link adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) and the detailed design for a satellite communication system to improve network reliability and system throughput. In the ACM scheme, the coding and modulation schemes are changed by as much as the channel can provide depending on the quality of the communication link. To implement the forward link ACM system in the Ka-band, channel prediction and modulation/coding decision methods are proposed and simulated. The parameters of the adaptive filter predictor based on the least mean square are optimized, the minimum mean square error of the channel predictor is 0.0608 when step size and the number of filter tap are 0.0001 and 4, respectively. A test-bed is set up to verify the forward link ACM system, and a test is performed using a Ka-band satellite (i.e., Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite [COMS]). This test verifies that the ACM scheme can increase the system throughput.

This paper presents modeling and control for the emerging IGBT converter-based high-voltage direct-current system (IGBT-HVDC). This paper adds to the representation of the IGBT-HVDC system in the dq-synchronous reference frame and its decoupled control scheme. Additionally, since the IGBT-HVDC is able to actively support the grid due to its capacity to control independently active and reactive power production, a reactive power control scheme is presented in order to regulate/contribute to the voltage at a remote location by taking into account its operational state and limits. The ability of the control scheme is assessed and discussed by means of simulations using ahybrid power system, which consists of a permanent magnetic synchronous-generator (PMSG) based wind turbine, an IGBT-HVDC, and a local load.
Extremely Low Frequency Magnetic Fields Do Not Elicit Oxidative Stress in MCF10A Cells

<P>The aim of this study was to determine whether extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) could affect intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and antioxidant enzyme activity. After MCF10A human breast epithelial cells were exposed to 1 mT of 60 Hz ELF-MF for 4 hours, intracellular ROS level, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and reduced to oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio were measured. The cells exposed to ELF-MF did not evidence statistically significant changes in the above-mentioned biological parameters as compared to either the incubator controls or sham-exposed cells. By way of contrast, the IR-exposed cells exhibited marked changes in ROS level, SOD activity, and GSH/GSSG ratio. When we assessed morphological changes and senescence-associated beta-galactosidase (SA-β-Gal) activity, only the IR-exposed cells were positive. According to our results, it could be concluded that ELF-MF has no effect on intracellular ROS level, SOD activity, and GSH/GSSG ratio under our exposure condition.</P>

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by relatively selective death of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). 6-Hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), a neurotoxin that causes the death of DA neurons, is commonly used to produce experimental PD model in rodents. Accumulating evidences suggest that caspase-independent apoptotic programmed cell death (PCD) could also be involved in the progression of various neurodegenerative diseases in addition to caspase-dependent neuronal PCD. Apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF), a mitochondrial intermembrane oxidoreductase, has been identified as a key protein implicated in caspase-independent apoptosis. However, little is known about the role of AIF in death of nigral DA neurons in PD. Therefore, we undertook this study in an effort to clarify the involvement of AIF in DA neuronal death by 6-OHDA administration. Ten and twenty micrograms of 6-OHDA was infused into the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) unilaterally, and the experimental rats were sacrificed at various time point. The DA neuronal loss was identified in the ipsilateral SN in the dose-dependent manner by using NeuN and tyrosine hydroxylase immunohistochemical staining and western blot assay. Numerous degenerating neurons, showing apoptotic features which are characterized by the shrunken nuclei with eosinophilic perikarya were observed in the ipsilateral SNpc. Activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3), the specific marker for neuronal damage, was expressed in the ipsilateral DA neurons only. Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining demonstrated that nuclear localization of AIF in the ipsilateral degenerating DA neurons. These results suggest that AIF could induce DA neuronal death by caspase-independent apoptosis in 6-OHDA treated model, although other cell death cascades should not be rule out.
Case Study on the Tree Diagnosis in a Zone of Life

최근 5년간(2013년~2017년) 국립나무병원으로 진단 의뢰된 수목 피해는 3,073건으로 매년 600여건 정도로 나타났다. 문의 유형별로 보면 전화가 79.6%로 가장 많았고, 내방이 10.7%, 인터넷 홈페이지 문의 또는 우편물 상담이 9.7% 순이었다. 수종별로는 소나무가 전체 대비 40.7%를 차지하여 소나무에 대한 국민의 관심이 높은 것을 알 수 있었다. 소나무 이외에 느티나무(5.9%), 벚나무(5.1%), 단풍나무(4.2%) 순으로 피해에 대한 문의가 많았다. 피해 원인별로는 병해충에 의한 생물적 피해가 1,385건(45.1%)이었으며, 그 중 해충에 의한 피해가 958건(31.2%)으로 병해에 의한 피해 427건(13.9%)보다 2배 이상 더 많이 발생하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 2017년도 진단 의뢰된 423건 중 피해의 원인을 정확하게 알 수 없는 경우 114건은 “기타”로 분류되었으며, 이들을 제외한 비생물적 원인의 144건 피해는 수목관리의 부적정 89건(61.8%), 생리적 피해 17건(11.8%), 약해 13건(9.0%), 기상해 9건(6.2%) 등이었다. 특히, 해충의 피해는 깍지벌레류, 진딧물류, 나무좀류, 나방류 등의 순으로 피해가 많았다.
