Surface treatments of Y2O3:Eu phosphors for improving the hydrophobic property were carried out using plasmas generated from a O-(Si(CH3)3)2 (HMDSO) in a low-pressure environment. The super-hydrophobic properties of the treated Y2O3:Eu phosphors were investigated. The samples treated by using the HMDSO/toluene glow plasma were analyzed by FTIR and OES and analyzed in terms of their contact angles (CAs). The effects of the HMDSO/toluene plasma treatments on the Y2O3:Eu phosphors were investigated in terms of the total surface free energy by using probe liquids to measure their contact angles (CAs). The total surface free energy of the Y2O3:Eu phosphors before and after a surface treatment with the HMDSO/toluene plasma, as estimated via the Owens-Wendt equation, was found to decrease from 82.2 mJ/m2 to 0.021 mJ/m2. This represents a significant improvement of the hydrophobicity of the Y2O3:Eu phosphors after the plasma treatment.

We obtained regenerated Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) plants by anther culture. When Italian ryegrass anther was incubated for 20 days on callus induction medium, MS medium containing 30 g/ℓ of NAA and 1 mg/ℓ of kinetin its callus was induced. The ratio of callus induction was 9.2 %, the mean of callus weight was 8.6 mg/callus/anther. When Italian ryegrass callus was incubated for 50 days on plant regeneration medium, MS medium containing 30 g/ℓ of sucrose, 1 mg/ℓ of NAA and 2 mg/ℓ of kinetin, Italian ryegrass plant was regenerated. The ratio of plant regeneration was 26%.
Valley-Polarized Interlayer Conduction of Anisotropic Dirac Fermions inSrMnBi2

<P>We report the valley-selective interlayer conduction of SrMnBi(2) under in-plane magnetic fields. The c-axis resistivity of SrMnBi(2) shows clear angular magnetoresistance oscillations indicating coherent interlayer conduction. Strong fourfold variation of the coherent peak in the c-axis resistivity reveals that the contribution of each Dirac valley is significantly modulated by the in-plane field orientation. This originates from anisotropic Dirac Fermi surfaces with strong disparity in the momentum-dependent interlayer coupling. Furthermore, we found a signature of broken valley symmetry at high magnetic fields. These findings demonstrate that a quasi-two-dimensional anisotropic Dirac system can host a valley-polarized interlayer current through magnetic valley control.</P>

<P>The objectives of this study were 1) to evaluate the effects of vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, hematological parameters, and behavior in a ruminant animal and 2) to investigate a possible strategy for reducing its adverse effect. A total of 12 Korean native goats (<I>Capra hircus coreanae</I>; 19.8 ± 2.9 kg) were used in a crossover design with 3 experimental periods and 3 treatments, randomized and balanced for counteracting possible carry-over effects. The treatments were 1) control, 2) co-injection with a commercially available dipyrone (CADI), and 3) supplementation with γ-amino butyric acid (GABA) at 10 g/kg in concentrate mix. Each period lasted 4 wk, and the vaccination against FMD was performed at 2 wk after the start of each period. The goats were individually housed in a metabolic cage and fed ad libitum with a diet consisting of bermuda grass and commercial concentrate mix (6:4, wt/wt). Dry matter intake, ADG, nutrients digestibility, hematological parameters, and behavioral activities of the goats were measured before and after vaccination. Although DMI was not decreased (<I>P</I> > 0.05), ADG was decreased by the vaccination to the goats (<I>P</I> < 0.01). The total number of leukocytes was increased while that of erythrocytes was decreased by the FMD vaccination (<I>P</I> < 0.01). The vaccination shortened standing time while extended lying time and the time spent in drinking (<I>P</I> < 0.05). The treatment by CADI reduced the adverse effect of vaccination on ADG and goat behavior compared with control and GABA treatment (<I>P</I> < 0.05). We concluded that the FMD vaccination decreased ADG of the goats without depression of diet intake, and CADI may attenuate the adverse effect of the FMD vaccination.</P>

<P>This study was performed to measure the equivalent scattered radiation dose delivered to susceptible organs while simulating orthopaedic surgery using conventional and mini C-arm fluoroscopy. In addition, shielding effects on the thyroid, thymus, and gonad, and the direct exposure delivered to the patient's hands were also compared. A conventional and mini C-arms were installed in an operating room, and a hand and an operator phantom were used to simulate a patient's hand and a surgeon. Photoluminescence dosimeters were used to measure the equivalent dose by scattered radiation arriving at the thyroid, thymus, and gonad on a whole-body phantom in the position of the surgeon. Equivalent scattered radiation doses were measured in four groups: (1) unshielded conventional C-arm group; (2) unshielded mini C-arm group; (3) lead-shielded conventional C-arm group; and (4) lead-shielded mini C-arm group. Equivalent scattered radiation doses to the unshielded group were significantly lower in the mini C-arm group than those in the conventional C-arm group for all organs. The gonad in the lead-shielded conventional C-arm group showed the highest equivalent dose among operator-susceptible organs, and radiation dose was reduced by approximately 96% compared with that in the unshielded group. Scattered radiation was not detected in any susceptible organ in the lead-shielded mini C-arm group. The direct radiation dose to the hand phantom measured from the mini C-arm was significantly lower than that measured from the conventional C-arm. The results show that the equivalent scattered radiation dose to the surgeon's susceptible organs and the direct radiation dose to a patient's hand can be decreased significantly by using a mini C-arm rather than a conventional C-arm. However, protective lead garments, such as a thyroid shield and apron, should be applied to minimize radiation exposure to susceptible organs, even during use of mini C-arm fluoroscopy.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>General design concept used in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) have deviated from forming an fcc single phase to utilizing hard intermetallic phases in ductile fcc matrix. Here, we effectively exploited strengthening effects of a brittle intermetallic sigma (σ) phase to improve cryogenic tensile properties of a non-equi-atomic ductile VCrFeNi four-component HEA. We preferentially selected vanadium as a candidate alloying element to efficiently produce the σ phase through computational thermodynamic approach. This σ phase has beneficial effects on grain refinement through retardation of grain growth due to grain-boundary pinning, thereby leading to yield strength of 0.79–0.93 GPa. The extensive strain hardening results in tensile strength of 1.33–1.49 GPa and ductility of 23–47% at cryogenic temperature, which are enabled by nano-sized dislocation substructures rather than deformation twinning. Our results demonstrate how the intermetallic σ phase, which has been avoided in typical HEAs because of ductility deterioration, could be used in high strength HEA design.</P>
Determinant of Arterial Stiffness in Young Adults

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors may be acting several decades before CVD becomes manifest. Data from young subjects may be valuable in further elucidating at this issue. We evaluated the association between baPWV (brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity) and cardiovascular risk factors in apparently healthy young adults. A total of 46 male and 91 female adolescents aged $18{\sim}25 years$ were studied. baPWV increased in a dose-responsive manner as the number of metabolic syndrome components. In both gender groups, baPWV was positively correlated with age. In males, waist, circumference total cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol were positively correlated with baPWV, and in females, blood pressure (BP) was positively correlated with baPWV. Age, gender, mean BP, and Homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were found to be independent factors associated with baPWV levels. In conclusion, mean BP, age, gender, and HOMA-IR were associated with baPWV in young adults. This result suggests that multiple cardiovascular risk factors may be associated with an increased risk of arterial stiffness in young adults.
Hypermethylation of the <i>COX-2</i> gene is a potential prognostic marker for cervical cancer

<P>Abstract</P><P>Aim: </P><P>The aim of the present study was to evaluate the DNA hypermethylation profiles of 14 genes known to be associated with tumor behavior and their clinical significance in cervical cancer.</P><P>Method: </P><P>The clinical features of 82 patients with stage IB cervical cancer were analyzed in terms of DNA hypermethylation of 14 genes (<I>hMLH1</I>, <I>p16</I>, <I>COX-2</I>, <I>CDH1</I>, <I>APC</I>, <I>DAPK</I>, <I>MGMT</I>, <I>p14</I>, <I>RASSF1A</I>, <I>RUNX3</I>, <I>TIMP3</I>, <I>FHIT</I>, <I>THBS1</I>, and <I>HLTF</I>).</P><P>Results: </P><P>Of 14 genes investigated, only hypermethylation of <I>COX-2</I> showed significant association with poor disease-free survival (<I>P</I> = 0.001). To further investigate an alteration in <I>COX-2</I> expression by DNA hypermethylation, immunohistochemistry for <I>COX-2</I> protein was performed in the cervical cancer tissues. We found no significant association between hypermethylation and expression patterns of the <I>COX-2</I> gene.</P><P>Conclusions: </P><P>The present results suggest that DNA hypermethylation of the <I>COX-2</I> gene may be a potential prognostic marker in early stage cervical cancer, the underlying mechanism of which is independent of gene silencing.</P>
