      • The Effects of Salt Stress on Photosynthetic Electron Transport and Thylakoid Membrane Proteins in the Cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis

        The response of Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis to high salt stress was investigated by incubating the cells in light of moderate intensity in the presence of 0.8 M NaCl. NaCl caused a decrease in photosystem II (PSII) mediated oxygen evolution activity and increase in photosystem I (PSI) activity and the amount of P700. Similarly maximal efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) and variable fluorescence (Fv/Fo) were also declined in salt-stressed cells. Western blot analysis reveal that the inhibition in PSII activity is due to a 40% loss of a thylakoid membrane protein, known as D1, which is located in PSII reaction center. NaCl treatment of cells also resulted in the alterations of other thylakoid membrane proteins: most prominently, a dramatic diminishment of the 47-kDa chlorophyll protein (CP) and 94-kDa protein, and accumulation of a 17-kDa protein band were observed in SDS-PAGE. The changes in 47-kDa and 94-kDa proteins lead to the decreased energy transfer from light harvesting antenna to PSII, which was accompanied by alterations in the chlorophyll fluorescence emission spectra of whole cells and isolated thylakoids. Therefore we conclude that salt stress has various effects on photosynthetic electron transport activities due to the marked alterations in the composition of thylakoid membrane proteins.

        Role of Additional Coronal Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Decompression and Reconstruction with or without Segment Salvage in Thoracic Spine Tuberculosis

        Study Design: Retrospective and observational study. Purpose: The present study aimed to develop guidelines for segment salvage or sacrifice based on the amount and status of the remnant portion of the vertebra as assessed by coronal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in addition to sagittal and axial images in thoracic spine tuberculosis (TB). Overview of Literature: Indications for surgery have not changed significantly since the ‘middle path regimen’ was proposed by Tuli. Goals of modern surgical management of spinal TB include debridement of diseased vertebrae, spinal cord decompression, deformity correction, and spine stabilization. However, the extent of decompression has not been defined previously. Too less decompression will lead to compromised neurological recovery, whereas large extent of decompression is associated with increased surgical morbidity and longer segment to reconstruct. Methods: Sixty-five patients with thoracic spine TB were divided into two groups (segment salvage/sacrifice) based on the thickness of the subchondral bone and endplate morphology of the vertebra as seen on MRI. The operative procedure in the form of instrumentation with Hartshill loop rectangle and sublaminar wire using the simultaneous anterior posterior approach in lateral position (versatile approach) was performed. The patients were analyzed for postoperative fusion, improvement in kyphosis angle, and followed up for development of complications. Results: This method of deciding the level of fixation and segment salvage based on coronal MRI in addition to the sagittal and axial images provided good result in 64 of 65 patients, except for one patient in the segment sacrifice group who had graft buckling and resultant kyphosis. Conclusions: For segment salvage, having a clear three-dimensional idea about the viable remnant bone is important. Viable salvaged segment reduces the morbidity of the procedure, length of the construct, and unnecessary debridement without compromising on the neural recovery and fusion rate. Hence, additional cone down coronal cuts must be required when MRI is suggestive for spinal TB because it will help in the decision making.

        Minimal quadratic residue cyclic codes of length $2^{n}$

        Let F be a finite field of prime power order q(odd) and the multiplicative order of q modulo 2n (n > 1) be (2n)/2. If n > 3, then q is odd number(prime or prime power) of the form 8m ± 3. If q = 8m − 3, then the ring R2n = F[x]/ < x2n − 1 > has 2n primitive idempotents. The explicit expressions for these primitive idempotents are obtained and the minimal QR cyclic codes of length 2n generated by these idempotents are completely described. If q = 8m + 3 then the expressions for the 2n − 1 primitive idempotents of R2n are obtained. The generating polynomials and the upper bounds of the minimum distance of minimal QR cyclic codes generated by these 2n−1 idempotents are also obtained. The case n = 2, 3 is dealt separately.

        A new species of Aprostocetus Westwood (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), parasitizing mango leaf gall midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), from India

        A new species of Aprostocetus doonensis Singh sp. nov. is described from northern India. The new species is a parasitoid of mango leaf gall midge, Procontarinia mangiferae (Felt) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). Some observations on biology and parasitization rate are also given.

        Congenital Absence of Posterior Elements of C2 Vertebra with Atlanto-Axial Dislocation and Basilar Invagination: A Case Report and Review of Literature

        Developmental anomalies of the axis are commonly encountered, especially anomalies involving the odontoid process. Anomalies of the posterior elements are uncommon. We describe a unique case of agenesis of posterior elements of C2 with basilar invagination and atlanto-axial dislocation. An obese 8-year-old boy presented with symptoms of cervical myelopathy. Radiological workup revealed a craniovertebral junction anomaly with occipitalised atlas, absent posterior elements of axis, and hypertrophied C3 spinous process. Atlanto-axial instability and basilar invagination was present. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed hypoplastic left vertebral artery. Traction with cervical tongs failed to improve the alignment and symptoms. Anterior trans-oral release, followed by posterior decompression and custom-made instrumentation, was done. The patient recovered completely and was asymptomatic at the end of two years. X-ray and computed tomography scan demonstrated reduction of basilar invagination and maintenance of alignment. This is the first case to be reported of agenesis of posterior elements of axis associated with basilar invagination. One should look for this condition in patients with hypertrophied spinous process of C3. Utilization of hypoplastic pedicle of axis serves as an additional fixation point to increase the stability of the construct.

        Clinical and Radiological Outcomes of Modified Mini-Open and Open Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion: A Comparative Study

        Study Design: Retrospective cohort study. Purpose: To compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of modified mini-open transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (modMOTLIF) and open TLIF (OTLIF). Overview of Literature: Minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MTLIF) is associated with less blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and less pain. However, it has concerns like increased radiation exposure, steep learning curve, and instrumentation cost. We modified the MTLIF technique by direct freehand insertion of pedicle screws using stab incisions without tubular retractors. Methods: The study included 24 patients in the modMOTLIF group and 27 patients in the OTLIF group. The average follow-up period was 25.6 months. Clinical outcomes were measured using Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores. Serial X-rays were acquired at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months to assess the union and presence of instability. We also compared blood loss and length of hospital stay in both groups. Results: All patients showed progressive improvement in VAS and ODI scores. No differences were observed in the preoperative and postoperative ODI and VAS leg scores between the groups. The immediate postoperative VAS back score was significantly higher in the OTLIF group than in the modMOTLIF group; however, no difference was observed at 1 and 2 years. Radiological analysis showed nonunion in one and two patients in the OTLIF and modMOTLIF groups, respectively. The average blood loss was 63 mL in the mod- MOTLIF group and 254 mL in the OTLIF group. The mean hospital stay was 3 days for the modMOTLIF group and 5 days for the OTLIF group. Conclusions: modMOTLIF was associated with reduced blood loss and shorter hospital stay compared with OTLIF. No significant differences were observed in the clinical and radiological outcomes between the groups after 2 years despite reduced back pain in the immediate postoperative period in patients who underwent modMOTLIF.

        Prevalence and Risk Factors for Low Back Pain in 1,355 Young Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study

        Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Purpose: To evaluate the prevalence and various risk factors for low back pain (LBP) in young adults in India. Overview of Literature: LBP is an emerging problem in adolescents, with an incidence that is the highest in the third decade of life worldwide. Various risk factors such as obesity, smoking, family history, stress, and exercise have been described in the literature. This study was conducted because of paucity of data in the Indian literature. Methods: A total of 1,355 (741 males and 641 females) young Indian Administrative Service aspirants and medical postgraduate aspirants aged 18–35 years were enrolled in the study. The subjects completed a detailed, semi-structured questionnaire that gathered data regarding their sociodemographic profile and factors considered to be risk factors for LBP. Anthropometric measurements, including height and weight, were measured and body mass index was calculated. Results: Most subjects (90.6%) were aged 20–29 years (mean, 24.49; range, 18–35 years). Results indicated that the following factors were associated with LBP in young adults: marital status, previous history of spine problems, strenuous exercise, job satisfaction, monotony, stress, daily number of studying hours, and family history of spine problems (p <0.05). However, age, sex, smoking, alcoholism, coffee intake, mode and duration of travel, diet, frequency of weightlifting, wearing heels, studying posture, and frequency and type of sports activities were not associated with LBP. Conclusions: The study identified various modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors that precipitated LBP in young adult Indians. Identifying these risk factors at an early stage will prevent LBP progression to a chronic disease state, thereby improving an individual’s quality of life and increasing productivity.
