This paper explores the meaning and importance of tuning amongst other Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) parameters and describes processes to help ensure that an as-built TMD is properly tuned to the as-built high-rise building. A summary of key TMD components and TMD implementations will be presented as an introduction and review. Next, it will be shown that tuning is a means for optimizing TMD performance. A process using modal characterization tests during tower construction to estimate natural frequencies of the completed tower will be described. Finally, the use of a Frequency Response Function (FRF) as a means for verifying the frequency of a TMD will be proposed.
Transmission Electron Microscopy on Memristive Devices: An Overview

This communication is to elucidate the state-of-the-art of techniques necessary to gather information on a new class of nanoelectronic devices known as memristors and related resistive switching devices, respectively. Unlike classical microelectronic devices such as transistors, the chemical and structural variations occurring upon switching of memristive devices require cutting-edge electron microscopy techniques. Depending on the switching mechanism, some memristors call for the acquisition of atomically resolved structural data, while others rely on atomistic chemical phenomena requiring the application of advanced X-ray and electron spectroscopy to correlate the real structure with properties. Additionally, understanding resistive switching phenomena also necessitates the application not only of pre- and post-operation analysis, but also during the process of switching. This highly challenging in situ characterization also requires the aforementioned techniques while simultaneously applying an electrical bias. Through this review we aim to give an overview of the possibilities and challenges as well as an outlook onto future developments in the field of nanoscopic characterization of memristive devices.

Mass-selected W cluster anions in the size range of 20-3500 are deposited on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surfaces. The structures of resulting thin films are studied using atomic force microscopy. Clusters with more than ~600 atoms form thin films, in which the clusters are not completely merged but survive as individual species to a certain extent. The new class of materials fabricated here (cluster-assemblies) has a potential for applications in heterogeneous catalysis and in optoelectronic devices. In addition, they are interesting from the perspective of basic research.
Screening of Taxol-producing Endophytic Fungi from Ginkgo biloba and Taxus cuspidata in Korea

Endophytic fungi from Ginkgo biloba and Taxus cuspidata in Korea were screened for production of taxol. Eighteen and twelve fungal isolates from G. biloba and T. cuspidata, respectively, were shown to produce immunologically detectable amount of taxol. The highest production of taxol at 260 ng/l was achieved by stationary culture of an Alternaria isolate from G. biloba. The strain also produced unidentified antifungal agent(s) against Pythium ultimum. However, the activity gradually decreased when the strain was stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 6 months.

An endophytic Coniochaeta velutina producing broad spectrum antimycotics

An endophyte (PC27-5) was isolated from stem tissue of Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) in a Pacific Northwest temperate rainforest. Phylogenetic analyses, based on ITS- 5.8S rDNA and 18S rDNA sequence data, combined with cultural and morphological analysis showed that endophyte PC27-5 exhibited all characteristics of a fungus identical to Coniochaeta velutina. Furthermore, wide spectrum antimycotics were produced by this endophyte that were active against such plant pathogens as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Pythium ultimum, and Verticillium dahliae and lethal to Phythophthora cinnamomi, Pythium ultimum, and Phytophthora palmivora in plate tests. The bioactive components were purified through organic solvent extraction, followed by silica column chromatography, and finally preparative HPLC. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the active fraction to Pythium ultimum, which was gained from preparative HPLC, was 11 μg/ml. UPLC-HRMS analysis showed there were two similar components in the antimycotic fraction. Their molecular formulae were established as C30H22O11 (compound I) and C30H22O10 (compound II) respectively, and preliminary spectral results indicate that they are anthroquinone glycosides. Other non – biologically active compounds were identified in culture fluids of this fungus by spectral means as emodin and chrysophanol - anthroquinone derivatives. This is the first report that Coniochaeta velutina as an endophyte produces bioactive antifungal components.
