<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Among the various biological routes for H<SUB>2</SUB> production, dark fermentation is considered the most practically applicable owing to its capability to degrade organic wastes and high H<SUB>2</SUB> production rate. Food waste (FW) has high carbohydrate content and easily hydrolysable in nature, exhibiting higher H<SUB>2</SUB> production potential than that of other organic wastes. In this review article, first, the current status of H<SUB>2</SUB> production from FW by dark fermentation and the strategies applied for enhanced performance are briefly summarized. Then, the technical and economic limitations of dark fermentation of FW are thoroughly discussed. Economic assessment revealed that the economic feasibility of H<SUB>2</SUB> production from FW by dark fermentation is questionable. Current efforts to further increase H<SUB>2</SUB> yield and waste removal efficiency are also introduced. Radix Salviae miltiorrhiza (RSM, 'Dansham' in Korea, 'Danshen' in Chinese), the root of Salviae miltiorrhiza Bunge (Labiate) has been used as Chinese fork medicine for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as angina pectoris, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, and hypertension. In the present study, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of 15,16-Dihydrotanshinone I, one of the major ingredients of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, on platelet aggregation, with elucidation of its mechanisms of action. 15,16-Dihydrotanshinone I concentration-dependently inhibited collagen-induced aggregation of rabbit washed platelets with $IC_{50}$ of $8.7{\pm}5.6\;{\mu}M$, the potency being about seven-fold greater than EGCG, an active Green tea catechin component ($IC_{50}:56.6{\pm}48.7\;{\mu}M$). 15,16-Dihydrotanshinone I significantly inhibited the intracellular calcium $([Ca^{2+}]_i)$ mobilization in a concentration-dependent manner. 15,16-dihdydrotanshinone I also significantly suppressed collagen (50 ${\mu}g/mL$)-induced liberation of $[^3H]$Arachidonic acid from $[^3H]$Arachidonic acid-incorporated rabbit platelet. In addition, 15,16-Dihydrotanshinone I at 50 ${\mu}M$ slightly but significantly inhibited collagen-induced production of thromboxane $B_2$. These results indicate that 15,16-Dihydrotanshinone I exert potent anti-platelet activity via suppression of $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ mobilization and arachidonic acid liberation.

Objectives : This study was prepared for investigating the clinical features of stroke patients. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 102 patients who were admitted to Department of Internal Medicine, College of Oriental Medicine, Kyung-Won University with a diagnosis of stroke from Jan. 1, 2004 to Dec. 31, 2004. Results : Ischemic stroke(include TIA, 82.4%) was more common than hemorrhagic stroke(17.6%). The incidence in male was 41.2%, in female was 17.6% and the most prevalent age group is over-sixties. Cerebral infarction was most frequently noticed in lacunar-infarction and hemorrhage in putamen. Hypertention, the most preceding diseases, followed by diabetes mellitus and CVA. The rate of recurrence was 27.45%. Cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage was much occurred after rising. The most patients visited the hospital within 24 Hours. The most common symptoms in admission time were motor weakness and speech disorder. The complication was mostly mental disorder. Conclusion : Our study on CVA patients was similar to previous studies from 1994 to 2003. In most cases, western and oriental treatment and medicine were given synthetically.

Green practices have been recognised as a growing requirement in the global Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition (MICE) industry due to increasing demand from key stakeholders, and the significant environmental harm caused by the industry. However, the subject on green practice in the Singapore MICE industry remains as one of the least developed areas of academic research. To address this gap, qualitative research involving semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with eight Singapore MICE organisers. It aimed to explore their views towards green practices, their extent of implementation in the waste and energy classification, as well as the motivation and barriers faced during adoption. This study revealed new findings on the contrast between Multinational Corporations (MNC) and Small & Medium Enterprise (SME) MICE companies’ commitment toward sustainable practices. The low usage of sustainability guidelines available in the market was linked to its inability to withstand the test of time in the evolving MICE industry. The study provides Practices insights for both academics and MICE practitioners given the infancy of green in Singapore coupled with the growing enthusiasm in the global MICE industry. Further research could investigate exploring internal factors affecting the adoption of sustainability practices as well as gathering views of other event stakeholders.
