Association of cadmium with diabetes in middle-aged residents of abandoned metal mines

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the association between urinary cadmium (U-cd) concentration and diabetes in middle-aged Korean residents of abandoned mines using the first Health Effect Surveillance for Residents in Abandoned Metal mines (HESRAM). Methods: This study was cross-sectional study conducted on 719 residents between 40?70 years in 38 abandoned metal mines in Korea. Data was collected by HESRAM from 2008 to 2011. The correlation coefficient of U-cd and fasting blood glucose, odds ratio in urinary cadmium tertiles and diabetes prevalence was analyzed according to the sex category. Results: The correlation coefficient U-cd concentration and fasting blood glucose was 0.182 in male. Logistic regression analysis in male revealed a third tertile odds ratio of U-cd (2 μg/g creatinine < U-cd) while diabetes prevalence was 1.81 (95 % CI 1.05-3.12) with adjusted age, BMI, smoking and alcohol consumption, region, family income. On the other hand, the odds ratio for third tertile of U-cd (3 μg/g creatinine < U-cd) between diabetes prevalence in female was 1.39 (95 % CI 0.52-3.72) in addition to adjusted menopausal status. Conclusions: Environmental exposure to cadmium in abandoned mine residents was associated with diabetes in male. Closed monitoring and periodic evaluation of the health effects of chronic environmental exposure on abandoned mines residents will be needed.

<P>A reliable antifuse scheme has been very hard to build, which has precluded its implementation in DRAM products. We devised a very reliable multi-cell structure to cope with the large process variation in the DRAM-cell-capacitor type antifuse system. The programming current did not rise above 564µA even in the nine-cell case. The cumulative distribution of the successful rupture in the multi-cell structure could be curtailed dramatically to less than 15% of the single-cell's case and the recovery problem of programmed cells after the thermal stress (300°C) had disappeared. In addition, we also presented a Post-Package Repair (PPR) scheme that could be directly coupled to the external high-voltage power rail via an additional pin with small protection circuits, saving the chip area otherwise consumed by the internal pump circuitry. A 1Gbit DDR SDRAM was fabricated using Samsung's advanced 50nm DRAM technology, successfully proving the feasibility of the proposed antifuse system implemented in it.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We have developed polydiacetylene (PDA)-based colorimetric biosensor for point-of-care testing (POCT) to detect high infectious pH1N1 virus among influenza A virus with the naked eye by color change. For this purpose, we first prepared PDA-PVDF membrane by immobilizing PDA onto the PVDF membrane through photo-polymerization, and then conjugated an antibody specifically binding to the influenza A virus into this membrane to form PDA-paper chips. This PDA-paper chips exhibited unique chromatic properties involving a color change from blue to red under various external conditions (temperature and pHs). Especially, we showed the color change of this paper chip in the presence of pH1N1 virus, confirming its potential as a POCT device. Furthermore, we have developed POCT systems based on PDA-paper chips by developing program, which is possible to visually detect viruses using only PDA-paper chips at a high concentration and detect and analyze them at low concentrations using both paper chips and program (App.). Further, this program will be updated to enable quantitative analysis of the virus.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> This PDA-paper chips can detect pH1N1 virus directly with the naked-eye through color change. </LI> <LI> The detection sensitivity of PDA-paper chips is improved by disturbing the PDA matrix with temperature increase. </LI> <LI> PDA-paper chip as a colorimetric biosensor is suitable to use as point-of-care testing (POCT) device. </LI> </UL> </P>
