A MULTI-WAVELENGTH VIEW OF GALAXY EVOLUTION WITH AKARI

AKARI's all-sky survey resolves the far-infrared emission in many thousands of nearby galaxies, providing essential local benchmarks against which the evolution of high-redshift populations can be measured. This review presents some recent results in the resolved galaxy populations, covering some well-known nearby targets, as well as samples from major legacy surveys such as the Herschel Reference Survey and the JCMT Nearby Galaxies Survey. This review also discusses the prospects for higher redshifts surveys, including strong gravitational lens clusters and the AKARI NEP field.

Submillimetre and millimetre-wave surveys with Herschel and the South Pole Telescope have revolu- tionised the discovery of strong gravitational lenses. Their follow-ups have been greatly facilitated by the multi-wavelength supplementary data in the survey elds. The forthcoming Euclid optical/near-infrared space telescope will also detect strong gravitational lenses in large numbers, and orbital constraints are likely to require placing its deep survey at the North Ecliptic Pole (the natural deep eld for a wide class of ground-based and space-based observatories including AKARI, JWST and SPICA). In this paper I review the current status of the multi-wavelength survey coverage in the NEP, and discuss the prospects for the detection of strong gravitational lenses in forthcoming or proposed facilities such as Euclid, FIRSPEX and SPICA.
THE SYNERGY OF LARGE AREA SURVEYS WITH AKARI AND HERSCHEL

The Herschel Space Observatory is the European Space Agency's state of the art infrared space telescope launched into space on 14 May 2009, covering the wavelength range from 70-700 microns with 3 instruments SPIRE, PACS and HIFI. Large area surveys are being carried out by Herschel in the AKARI legacy fields at the North and South Ecliptic Poles and the AKARI All-Sky Survey provides additional synergy with the largest survey with Herschel, H-ATLAS, covering more than 500 square degrees. This paper reports on some of the early results of these synergies between Herschel and AKARI including the first comparison of the AKARI All-Sky Survey number counts with the deeper Herschel surveys.
DETECTION OF Hα EMISSION FROM z>3.5 GALAXIES WITH AKARI-FUHYU NIR SPECTROSCOPY

This paper presents $H{\alpha}$ emission line detections for four galaxies at z > 3.5 made with AKARI as part of the FUHYU mission program. These are the highest-redshift $H{\alpha}$ detections to date in star-forming galaxies. AKARI's unique near-infrared spectroscopic capability has made these detections possible. For two of these galaxies, this represents the first evidence of their redshifts and confirms their physical association with a companion radio galaxy. The star formation rates (SFRs) estimated from the $H{\alpha}$ lines under-predict the SFRs estimated from their far-infrared luminosities by a factor of ~ 2 - 3. We have also detected broad $H{\alpha}$ components in the two radio galaxies which indicate the presence of quasars.
Photometric redshift accuracy in <i>AKARI</i> deep surveys

<P>ABSTRACT</P><P>We investigate the photometric redshift accuracy achievable with the <I>AKARI</I> infrared data in deep multiband surveys, such as in the North Ecliptic Pole field. We demonstrate that the passage of redshifted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and silicate features into the mid-infrared wavelength window covered by <I>AKARI</I> is a valuable means to recover the redshifts of starburst galaxies. To this end, we have collected a sample of ∼60 galaxies drawn from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-North Field with spectroscopic redshift 0.5 ≲<I>z</I><SUB>spec</SUB>≲ 1.5 and photometry from 3.6 to 24 μm, provided by the <I>Spitzer</I>, <I>Infrared Space Observatory</I> and <I>AKARI</I> satellites. The infrared spectra are fitted using synthetic galaxy spectral energy distributions which account for starburst and active nuclei emission. For ∼90 per cent of the sources in our sample, the redshift is recovered with an accuracy |<I>z</I><SUB>phot</SUB>−<I>z</I><SUB>spec</SUB>|/(1 +<I>z</I><SUB>spec</SUB>) ≲ 10 per cent. A similar analysis performed on a set of simulated spectra shows that the <I>AKARI</I> infrared data alone can provide photometric redshifts accurate to |<I>z</I><SUB>phot</SUB>−<I>z</I><SUB>spec</SUB>|/(1 +<I>z</I><SUB>spec</SUB>) ∼ 10 per cent (1σ) at <I>z</I>≲ 2. At higher redshifts, the PAH features are shifted outside the wavelength range covered by <I>AKARI</I> and the photo-<I>z</I> estimates rely on the less prominent 1.6 μm stellar bump; the accuracy achievable in this case on (1 +<I>z</I>) is ∼10–15 per cent, provided that the active galactic nuclei contribution to the infrared emission is subdominant. Our technique is no more prone to redshift aliasing than optical-ultraviolet photo-<I>z</I>, and it may be possible to reduce this aliasing further with the addition of submillimetre and/or radio data.</P>

<P>We present extragalactic number counts and a lower limit estimate for the cosmic infrared background (CIRB) at 15 mu m from AKARI ultra deep mapping of the gravitational lensing cluster Abell 2218. These data are the deepest taken by any facility at this wavelength and uniquely sample the normal galaxy population. We have de-blended our sources, to resolve photometric confusion, and de-lensed our photometry to probe beyond AKARI's blank-field sensitivity. We estimate a de-blended 5 sigma sensitivity of 28.7 mu Jy. The resulting 15 mu m galaxy number counts are a factor of 3 fainter than previous results, extending to a depth of similar to 0.01 mJy and providing a stronger lower limit constraint on the CIRB at 15 mu m of 1.9 +/- 0.5 nW m(-2) sr(-1).</P>
AKARI DEEP FIELD SOUTH: SPECTROSCOPIC OBSERVATIONS OF INFRARED SOURCES

We present a summary of our spectroscopic redshift catalogue of 404 sources in the {\it AKARI} Deep Field South (ADF-S). We have used the AAOmega spectrograph to target mid-infrared and far-infrared sources selected primarily from {\it AKARI} observations in this field for which we were able to obtain optical counterparts. Our sources with identified redshifts include 316 with H$\alpha$ detections at z ≤ 0.345 and 15 sources at z > 1 with MgII or Lyα emission lines. About 13% of our z ≤0.345 sources are dominated by active galactic nuclei (AGN) emission, although many show emission from both star formation and AGNs. The median Balmer decrement is 5.9. Ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) were found only in the higher-redshift sources. Optical and near infrared data will be available shortly, enabling calibration of the line luminosities and spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting for these sources.
