Oxidant/antioxidant balance has been suggested as an important factor for initiation and progression of cancer. The objective of this study was to determine changes in the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in serum samples of breast cancer patients (n=30) and healthy subjects (n=100). MDA and NO levels were found to be increased in breast cancer patients compared to the healthy subject group (p<0.05). Total cholesterol and triglycerides were elevated; and HDL-cholesterol level was found to be decreased in the cancer patients as compared to the healthy subjects (p<0.05). Compared to the healthy group, both serum TAC levels (p<0.001) and activity of SOD and GSH-Px (p=0.05) were found to be decreased in the breast cancer patients as compared to the healthy controls. Considering the data presented in this study, we suggest that free radicals induce lipid eroxidation and peroxidation of unsaturated fatty acid with decreased activity of enzymatic antioxidants in breast cancer.

Eichhornia charcoal modified with cationic surfactant is used as an adsorbent. The characterization wasdone by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, X-ray diffraction, scanningelectron micrograph, and point of zero charge measurements. Effect of contact time, initial dyeconcentration, adsorbent dose and temperature were studied. Experimental data were contemplated forvarious kinetic models and thermodynamic models and interpreted that adsorption followed secondorder kinetic model. Langmuir model deduced the maximum adsorption capacity as 103.2 mg g 1 at323 K. Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy have been calculated and the present adsorption systemis speculated as spontaneous and endothermic in nature.

Purpose: Uncertainty exists about whether early laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is an appropriate surgical treatment for acute calculous cholecystitis. This study aimed to compare early vs. late LC for acute calculous cholecystitis regarding intraoperative difficulty and postoperative outcomes. Methods: This was a prospective randomized study carried out between December 2015 and June 2017; 60 patients with acute calculous cholecystitis were divided into two groups (early and delayed groups), each comprising 30 patients. Thirty patients treated with LC within 3 to 5 days of arrival at the hospital were assigned to the early group. The other 30 patients were placed in the delayed group, first treated conservatively, and followed by LC 3 to 6 weeks later. Results: The conversion rates in both groups were 6.7% and 0%, respectively (p = 0.143). The operating time was 56.67 ± 11.70 minutes in the early group and 75.67 ± 20.52 minutes in the delayed group (p = 0.001), and both groups observed equal levels of postoperative complications. Early LC patients, on the other hand, required much fewer postoperative hospital stay (3.40 ± 1.99 vs. 6.27 ± 2.90 days, p = 0.006). Conclusion: Considering shorter operative time and hospital stay without significant increase of open conversion rates, early LC might have benefits over late LC.

Mesoporous adsorbent is prepared first time using ferrocene based surfactant as a template and adsorption of azo dye Congo red is investigated. Adsorbent is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and N2 adsorption–desorption and deduced a lofty surface area of 342 m2/g. Effect of contact time, adsorbent dose, initial dye concentration and temperature were speculated to optimize adsorption conditions. Experimental data were contemplated for various kinetics and thermodynamic models at different temperatures and insinuated that adsorption process is film diffusion controlled and followed second order kinetics. Langmuir model imparted high value of monolayer capacity as 312.5 mg/g. The values of thermodynamic parameters like enthalpy (DH) and entropy (DS) were found to be 49.94 kJ/mol and 265.5 J/K/mol, respectively, and negative values of DG corroborated that the present adsorption system is feasible, spontaneous and endothermic.

A highly ordered large pore mesoporous adsorbent MCM-41 is synthesized and characterized by XRD,BET, FTIR and SEM. Effect of contact time, initial dye concentration, adsorbent dose, pH and temperaturewere studied for adsorption of dye safranin on MCM-41. Experimental data were investigated for variousthermodynamic models and kinetic models and corroborated that adsorption followed second orderkinetic model. Langmuir model evidenced the maximum adsorption capacity as 68.8 mg g 1 at 303 K. Thermodynamic parameters surmised that adsorption of safranin on MCM-41 is spontaneous, exothermic and feasible.

Background: Existing literature lacks high-quality evidence regarding the ideal intraoperative positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) to minimize postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). We hypothesized that applying individualized PEEP derived from electrical impedance tomography would reduce the severity of postoperative lung aeration loss, deterioration in oxygenation, and PPC incidence. Methods: A pilot feasibility study was conducted on 36 patients who underwent open abdominal oncologic surgery. The patients were randomized to receive individualized PEEP or conventional PEEP at 4 cmH2O. The primary outcome was the impact of individualized PEEP on changes in the modified lung ultrasound score (MLUS) derived from preoperative and postoperative lung ultrasonography. A higher MLUS indicated greater lung aeration loss. The secondary outcomes were the PaO2/FiO2 ratio and PPC incidence. Results: A significant increase in the postoperative MLUS (12.0 ± 3.6 vs 7.9 ± 2.1, P < 0.001) and a significant difference between the postoperative and preoperative MLUS values (7.0 ± 3.3 vs 3.0 ± 1.6, P < 0.001) were found in the conventional PEEP group, indicating increased lung aeration loss. In the conventional PEEP group, the intraoperative PaO2/FiO2 ratios were significantly lower but not the postoperative ratios. The PPC incidence was not significantly different between the groups. Post-hoc analysis showed the increase in lung aeration loss and deterioration of intraoperative oxygenation correlated with the deviation from the individualized PEEP.Conclusions: Individualized PEEP appears to protect against lung aeration loss and intraoperative oxygenation deterioration. The advantage was greater in patients whose individualized PEEP deviated more from the conventional PEEP.

PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to determine accurately the part of the tragus to be used to form the Ala-Tragal line or Camper’ line in orthognathic profile patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 150 dentate subjects with age of 18-40 years with orthognathic profile were sampled. Life-size lateral digital photographs of the face with fox plane were taken in natural head position. Different angles between Eye-Ear plane and occlusal plane (OT1-OP), Eye-Ear plane and ala-superior border of tragus (OT1-AT1), Eye-Ear plane and ala-middle border of tragus (OT1-AT2) and Eye-Ear plane and ala-inferior border of tragus (OT1-AT3) were calculated using computer software package, AutoCAD 2004. From the three angles formed by the Eye-ear plane (OT1 or FH plane) and the ala-tragal lines, the one closest to the angle formed between Eye-Ear plane (OT1) and occlusal plane (OP) was used to determine the occlusal plane of orientation. The obtained results were subjected to ANOVA F test, Tukey’ Honestly significant difference test, followed by Karl Pearson coefficient of correlation test. P values of less than 0.05 were taken as statistically significant. RESULTS. The mean of base line angle i.e. OT1-OP angle (11.96 ± 4.36) was found to be close to OT1-AT2 angle (13.67 ± 1.93) and OT1-AT3 angle (10.31 ± 2.03), but OT1-OP angle was found to be more closer to OT1-AT3 angle. Comparison of mean angles showed that OT1-OP angle in both males (11.68) and females (12.51) is close to OT1-AT3 angle (males- 11.01, females- 11.95). CONCLUSION. The line joining from ala to the lower border of the tragus was parallel to the occlusal plane in 53.3% of the subjects. There was no influence of the sex on the level of occlusal plane.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P>10.1002/jmr.1014.abs<P>Polyaniline/carbon nanotubes composite (PANI‐CNT) electrochemically deposited onto indium‐tin‐oxide (ITO) coated glass plate has been utilized for <I>Neisseria gonorrhoeae</I> detection by immobilizing 5′‐amino‐labeled <I>Neisseria gonorrhoeae</I> probe (aDNA) using glutaraldehyde as a cross‐linker. PANI‐CNT/ITO and aDNA‐Glu‐PANI‐CNT/ITO electrodes have been characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). This bioelectrode can be used to detect <I>N. gonorrhoeae</I> using methylene blue (MB) as redox indicator with response time of 60 s and stability of about 75 days when stored under refrigerated conditions. DPV studies reveal that this bioelectrode can detect complementary DNA concentration from 1 × 10−6 M to 1 × 10−17 M with detection limit of 1.2 × 10−17 M. Further, this bioelectrode (aDNA‐Glu‐PANI‐CNT/ITO) exhibits specificity toward <I>N. gonorrhoeae</I> species and shows negative response with non‐<I>Neisseria gonorrhoeae</I> <I>Neisseria</I> species (NgNS) and other gram negative bacteria (GNB).
