Evaluation of Efficacy of Ultrasonography in the Assessment of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation in Subjects with Myositis and Myofascial Pain

Background: The study aimed to determine if ultrasonography of masseter can be used to evaluate the outcome of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in subjects with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) such as myositis and myofascial pain. Methods: Fifteen TMD subjects with myofascial pain/myositis who satisfied the RDC/McNeil criteria were included in the study. All the subjects were administered TENS therapy for a period of 6 days (30 minutes per session). The mouth opening (in millimeters) and severity of pain (visual analogue scale score) and ultrasonographic thickness of the masseter (in millimeters) in the region of trigger/tender areas was assessed in all the subjects both prior and post TENS therapy. A comparison of the pre-treatment and post-treatment values of the VAS score, mouth opening and masseter thickness was done with the help of a t-test.Results: There was a significant reduction in the thickness of masseter muscle (P = 0.028) and VAS scores (P < 0.001) post TENS therapy. There was also a significant improvement in the mouth opening (P = 0.011) post TENS therapy. Conclusions: In the present study, ultrasonography was found to be an effective measuring tool in the assessment of TENS therapy in subjects with myositis and myofascial pain. Highly selective CO₂ capture by S-doped microporous carbon materials

S-doped microporous carbon materials were synthesized by the chemical activation of a reduced-graphene-oxide/poly-thiophene material. The material displayed a large CO<SUB>2</SUB> adsorption capacity of 4.5mmolg<SUP>-1</SUP> at 298K and 1atm, as well as an impressive CO<SUB>2</SUB> adsorption selectivity over N<SUB>2</SUB>, CH<SUB>4</SUB> and H<SUB>2</SUB>. The material was shown to exhibit a stable recycling adsorption capacity of 4.0mmolg<SUP>-1</SUP>. The synthesized material showed a maximum specific surface area of 1567m<SUP>2</SUP>g<SUP>-1</SUP> and an optimal CO<SUB>2</SUB> adsorption pore size of 0.6nm. The microporosity, surface area and oxidized S content of the material were found to be the determining factors for CO<SUB>2</SUB> adsorption. These properties show that the as synthesized S-doped microporous carbon material can be more effective than similarly prepared N-doped microporous carbons in CO<SUB>2</SUB> capture.

Reduction of Fuzzy Rules and Membership Functions and Its Application to Fuzzy PI and PD Type Controllers

Fuzzy controller's design depends mainly on the rule base and membership functions over the controller's input and output ranges. This paper presents two different approaches to deal with these design issues. A simple and efficient approach, namely, Fuzzy Subtractive Clustering is used to identify the rule base needed to realize Fuzzy PI and PD type controllers. This technique provides a mechanism to obtain the reduced rule set covering the whole input/output space as well as membership functions for each input variable. But it is found that some membership functions projected from different clusters have high degree of similarity. The number of membership functions of each input variable is then reduced using a similarity measure. In this paper, the fuzzy subtractive clustering approach is shown to reduce 49 rules to 8 rules and number of membership functions to 4 and 6 for input variables (error and change in error) maintaining almost the same level of performance. Simulation on a wide range of linear and nonlinear processes is carried out and results are compared with fuzzy PI and PD type controllers without clustering in terms of several performance measures such as peak overshoot, settling time, rise time, integral absolute en-or (IAE) and integral-of-time multiplied absolute error (ITAE) and in each case the proposed schemes shows an identical performance.

Hologram Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship Analysis of JNK Antagonists

c-Jun N-terminal kinase-3 (JNK3) is a member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase family (MAPK), and plays an important role in neurological disorders. Therefore, identification of selective JNK3 inhibitor may contribute towards neuroprotection therapies. In this work, we performed hologram quantitative structure-activity relationship (HQSAR) on a series of thiophene trisubstituted derivatives. The best predictions were obtained for HQSAR model with q2 = 0.628 and r2 = 0.986. Statistical parameters from the generated QSAR models indicated the data is well fitted and have high predictive ability. HQSAR result showed that atom, bond and chirality descriptors play an important role in JNK3 activity and also shows that electronegative groups is highly favourble to enhance the biological activity. Our results could be useful to design novel and selective JNK3 inhibitors.

탈북 작가의 단편소설에 나타난 가치관의 변화 양상 연구 - 고난의 행군 시기를 배경으로 한 작품을 중심으로 -

본 논문은 탈북 작가의 단편소설에 투영된 고난의 행군 시기와 그 이후의 북한 사회와 인민의 일상을 분석하면서 고난의 행군이 북한 인민들에게 미친 영향을 밝히려고 하였다. 1990년대의 경제난은 북한 사회와 주민들 생활에 많은 어려움을 가져왔기 때문에 고난의 행군은 탈북 작가 문학에서 끊임없이 재생되는 주제 중 하나이다. 고난의 행군은 북한 경제에 큰 영향을 끼쳤으며 더불어 북한 인민의 일상과 가치관에도 많은 변화를 가져왔다. 고난의 행군 시기에 식량 배급이 중단되면서 주민들은 살아남기 위해 거래 활동을 통해 스스로 먹을 것을 구하기 시작했다. 사회주의적인 당 사상이 강한 인물들도 생계유지를 위해서 북한의 비공식적인 시장인 장마당에 뛰어들 수밖에 없었다. 처음 장마당의 거래 활동은 생필품을 구하기 위해 시작되었지만, 돈에 집착하면서 시장화를 수용하여 이윤을 추구하는 방향으로 변했다. 따라서 고난 행군 시기에 장마당의 형성과 시장화의 수용은 북한의 사회주의적인 가치관 변화에 영향을 미쳤다고 할 수 있다. 북한에서 여성은 가사 노동을 전담하였는데, 고난의 행군 시기에 가족의 생계까지 여성의 몫이 되었다. 따라서 책임감이 강한 여성은 가족을 먹여 살리기 위해 집을 떠나 경제 활동을 하기 시작했다. 돈을 벌기 위해 여성은 필요에 따라 몸을 팔기도 했다. 당시 경제 활동은 주로 여성들이 하고 있었다. 왜냐하면, 남성은 군대에 가거나 건설 현장에 가야 했기 때문이었다. 고난의 행군으로 인해 불가피하게 시작하게 시작된 여성의 경제 활동은 비도덕적인 면도 있었지만, 여성이 당시 사회에서 수행하는 역할을 넓혔고 더 중요한 자리에 앉는 데에 도움이 되었다. 고난의 행군 시기 장마당 활동을 비롯한 시장의 수용 증가에서 당시 북한 주민의 사회주의에 대한 시각의 변화를 볼 수 있다. 그리고 시대의 이러한 변화와 같이 북한 여성의 역할도 점차 변했다. 고난 행군 시기를 배경으로 한 작품에서는 사회주의가 없었다면 잘 살 수 있다고 생각하는 북한 사람의 모습도 엿볼 수 있었다. 즉 시대의 변화와 함께 변해가는 북한 주민의 모습을 확인할 수 있다.

An Observer-based Backstepping Integral Nonsingular Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Fault Tolerant Control Design for Quadrotors Under Different Types of Actuator Faults

This paper develops a fault tolerant control (FTC) approach for quadrotor aerial vehicles under different types of actuator faults. An observer-based fault detection and diagnosis mechanism is devised to estimate the faults. A robust finite-time convergent controller which merges the features of Backstepping, and Integral Nonsingular Fast Terminal Sliding surface is proposed to ensure the finite time stability of the states in nominal conditions and their asymptotic stability in faulty conditions. A control redistribution method is formulated to maintain the quadrotor in flight, in the case of complete actuator failure and lock in place (LIP) faults. The proposed controller was assessed in the presence of loss of actuator effectiveness (LOE) faults, complete damage of one rotor and LIP faults. The obtained results confirmed the ability of the proposed approach to enable the quadrotor to track the commanded trajectory precisely under partial LOE faults and continue tracking with an expected performance degradation under the effect of complete motor failure and LIP faults.

Application of Docking Methods: An Effective In Silico Tool for Drug Design

Using computational approaches we can dock small molecules into the structures of Macromolecular targets and then score their potential complementarity to binding sites is widely used in hit identification and lead optimization techniques. This review seeks to provide the application of docking in structure-based drug design (binding mode prediction, Lead Identification and Lead optimization), and also discussed how to manage errors in docking methodology in order to overcome certain limitations of docking and scoring algorithm.

Low-grade extrauterine endometrial stromal sarcoma arising from vaginal endometriosis: a case report and literature review

Extrauterine endometrial stromal sarcoma arising from malignant transformation of the vagina is an extremely rare condition. The diagnosis is often difficult as the symptomatology and pathological features overlap with that of pelvic endometriosis. A 38 years old female presented with complaints of dyspareunia, dysmenorrhea, and painful defecation along with blood-stained vaginal discharge for a year. Examination revealed the presence of multiple brownish irregular nodules in posterior vaginal fornix and fixed tender nodules which on biopsy revealed florid vaginal endometriosis. She improved symptomatically on medical therapy. After 18 months of diagnosis, she presented again with a necrotic growth in posterior fornix, which on repeat biopsy revealed a low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma. Laparotomy revealed a 7×5 cm mass in the pouch of Douglas, infiltrating the posterior vaginal wall and rectum. A complete cytoreductive surgery with retrograde hysterectomy, excision of posterior vaginal wall and rectosigmoid resection was done. The patient is disease-free at a follow-up of 65 months.

Ethnic and paleolithic diet: Where do they stand in inflammation alleviation? A discussion

The current food options, especially in the Western countries, are acidogenic, which reduce extracellular pH and perturb ionic homeostasis. The acidity-activated enzymes mediate a large panel of chronic and acute diseases. To quell the morbidities and mortalities associated with the metabolic syndromes, nonpharmacologic approaches are preferred. Dietary interventions are critical in this regard. Among the array of dietary patterns, paleo diet has garnered much attention in the last decade. This diet rich in phytochemicals and unsaturated fatty acids is deemed wholesome for the body. Several studies have proven this claim, yet their nutritional adequacy for all age groups is contentious. The popularity of ethnic foods is rising; but their nutrition and safety position can vary. Although some of them are close to paleo food, some are unhealthy. This review explores the mechanism by which paleo diet restores homeostasis of the body and how its inherent nutritional deficiency can be amended with conventional diet, by the formulation of personalized diet. This compilation is expected to be insightful for dietary optimization.
