Traumatic uterine rupture is uncommon but can be fatal and life-threatening for both the mother and infant. In addition to complications caused by trauma itself, such as pelvic fracture, gestational complications such as placental abruption, abortion, premature labor, rupture of membranes, maternal death, and stillbirth can occur. In particular, fetuses have been reported to have a high mortality rate in cases of traumatic uterine rupture. A 36-year-old pregnant female patient fell from the fourth floor and was admitted to our trauma center. We observed large hemoperitoneum, pelvic fractures, and spleen laceration, and the fetus was presumed to be located outside the uterus. The pregnant woman was hemodynamically unstable. Although the fetus was stillborn, angioembolization and surgical treatment were properly performed through collaboration with an interventional radiologist, obstetrician, and trauma surgeons. After two orthopedic operations, the patient was discharged after 34 days. This case report suggests the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of pregnant trauma patients.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We propose silicone implants capable of the local, controlled release of a glucocorticoid drug, triamcinolone acetonide (TA), for the prevention of fibrosis. The shells of these silicone implants were coated with two different loading amounts of TA, which could release the drug in a sustained manner for 12 weeks. The drug-loaded implants were inserted into the subcutaneous space in living rats, and the tissues were biopsied at scheduled times during 12 weeks. For the drug-coated implants, the capsule thickness and collagen density decreased compared with those of the non-coated implant. Because of the effect of TA, inflammation and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines were downregulated, thereby decreasing the number of monocytes during acute inflammation. This effect in turn decreased the number of macrophages at the later stage of inflammation, leading to the expression of less TGF-β and consequently fewer fibroblasts and myofibroblasts. Our findings also revealed that with an appropriate dose control, skin and muscle atrophy, major side effects of TA, could be avoided while still effectively reducing fibrosis. Therefore, we conclude that the local, sustained release of an appropriate dose of a glucocorticoid drug can be a promising strategy for safely preventing fibrosis around silicone implants.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We investigated the biocompatibility of GQDs in terms of the cellular response, an aspect often overlooked. Herein, we synthesized two types of GQDs – Glu-GQDs (GQDs which are derived from glucose) and Gr-GQDs (GQDs which are derived from graphite) – with different functional groups on their surfaces. Both types of GQDs shared similar morphological features (shape and size distribution); the size distribution varied between 1.5 nm to 9.5 nm in both cases. Spectral analysis confirmed the difference in their chemical composition. The presence of nitrogen and chlorine in the Glu-GQDs is the major distinction between the two types of GQDs. Fluorescence emission of the obtained GQDs was observed at 480 nm for the Glu-GQDs, and at 550 nm for the Gr-GQDs. The cytotoxicity in NHDF and HeLa cell line was evaluated by a CCK-8 assay, and it confirmed that the cell viability was above 80% despite the high concentration (1024 μg/mL) in both cases. Cellular response after GQDs treatment was different from the control, but it was not lethal in the cell viability aspect. Furthermore, the potential of the GQDs as bio-imaging agents was examined using a fluorescence microscope and a laser scanning confocal microscope. The Glu-GQDs dispersed throughout the cells in NHDF and HeLa cell line, while the Gr-GQDs dispersed in the cytoplasm of the NHDF cells, and were distributed throughout the cell in HeLa. Plant transformation systems have been developed using several different approaches, and the development of reliable and efficient transformation systems is still one of the most important breakthroughs in molecular biology and biotechnology of rice. However, there are many cultivars in rice and transformation efficiency is dependent on the cultivar. The conventional Agrobacterium-mediated rice transformation system using secondary calli requires 14-16 weeks for establishing transgenic plantlets, and it is thought that somaclonal variation through the Tos17 retrotransposon occurs during the tissue culture stage. Here, we modified an Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system in rice cultivar Dongjin, adding an endosperm removal step that is critical to transformation frequency and changing the Agrobacterium strain and media composition. This method increased transformation efficiency and stability. These results will provide valuable information for scientists to use a reliable and efficient rice transformation system.

Sol-gel법으로 Pt/Ti/SiO₂/Si 기판 위에 PbZrO₃박막을 제작하였다. 박막의 결정화를 위하여 전기로에서는 700℃에서 30분간 열처리하였고, 급속가열장치(RTA)를 이용할 때에는 700℃에서 1분간 열처리 하였다. 이렇게 제작된 박막 결정의 주성장 방향은 열처리전의 건조조건에 의하여 결정됨을 알았다. 박막의 성장 방향은 300℃이하의 온도에서 건조하였을 때에는 박막의 성장이 무작위로 나타나고, 그 가운데에서도 <221>방향으로의 성장이 두드러지게 나타났다. 그러나 300℃이상의 온도에서 건조하였을 때에는 성장방향의 무작위성이 사라지면서 <200>방향으로의 성장이 뛰어남을 나타내었다.
