The present study compared liquid sourdoughtechnology with baker’s yeast leavening when applied tothe production of a semolina-based crispy flatbread. Followingin vitro starch digestion, the results revealed thesourdough leavened flatbread to contain a lower percentageof rapidly digestible starch (16%), higher amounts ofslowly digestible starch (27%) and inaccessible digestiblestarch (4.1%) compared with the baker’s yeast leavenedflatbread (20, 20, and 2.4%, respectively), making theformer nutritionally healthier. The sourdough leavenedbread was crispier, stiffer and more solid, as shown bytexture analyses, although Raman spectroscopy revealed nodifferences in the crystallinity status of starch. Thedescriptive analyses show that the use of sourdoughenhances the positive sensory traits, as rated by the consumerpanel scores (6.08 vs. 5.56). In summary, the resultsindicate that the implementation of sourdough technologyin the production of flat crispy breads could confer economicadvantages to this product.

This paper focuses on the increasing role of sound in modernist novels. Two modernist novelists, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf were involved in creating recorded forms of their novels and broadcasting them on the radio as well. In their time, they showed their awareness of the importance of sound. From their writing, three novels have been chosen for embodying distinctive sounds that were prevalent before, after, and even during World War I. Sound was closely observed in the three novels Ulysses, Mrs Dalloway, and To the Lighthouse, following the particular three-part structure of the last novel. By observing their novels, it is possible to see how they made use of sound to increase the awareness of war for the readers. Moreover, other than the time factor, both novels take place in the metropolis, Dublin and London. This allows the sounds to be specific to the metropolis. In all, Joyce's Ulysses embodies sound that shows pre-war indicators in Dublin, and Woolf's Mrs Dalloway's post-war London has a totally different kind of sound. Even more abstract yet recognizable is what happens between the two-representation of actual war sounds in Woolf's To the Lighthouse.

Background/Aims: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is the standard approach for the management of biliary complications in liver transplant patients; however, its safety and efficacy have not been established in this setting. This study was performed to evaluate the safety and long-term efficacy of ERCP in transplant patients. Methods: The case reports of 1,500 liver transplant patients were reviewed. Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) patients were matched 1:2 with non-OLT patients and followed-up for long-term outcome (median, 7.4 years). Results: Of the 1,500 liver transplant patients, 94 (6.3%) underwent 150 ERCPs after OLT. Anastomotic strictures were present in 45 patients, biliary stones in 24, biliary leaks in 7, papillary stenosis in 2, and primary sclerosing cholangitis in 1. An ERCP success rate of 90.7% was achieved; biliary stenting led to resolution of the bile leak in 7/7 (100%) patients, and biliary stones were removed in 21/24 (87.5%) patients. In addition, 34 of 45 patients with anastomotic stricture underwent endoscopic dilation. We obtained complete resolution in 22/34 (64.7%) patients. OLT patients did not show a higher probability of complications (odds ratio [OR], 1.04), of pancreatitis (OR, 0.80) or of bleeding (OR, 1.34). Conclusions: ERCP is safe and effective for the treatment of post-OLT biliary complications, has a low rate of pancreatitis and results in a durable effect. (Gut Liver 2011;5:328-334)
PCE : A Knowledge Base of Semantically Disambiguated Contents

With the Semantic Web people participate more actively in the building of information and take on an active role in enriching collaborative knowledge bases with user-generated contents. Moreover, new online resources have quickly gained impact on information management, such as the social bookmarking systems, which enable users to store, manage and share tagged Web content through folksonomies. These social tools allow users to associate free chosen keywords (tags) with Web content with the aim of providing an efficient navigation system through the heterogeneous amount of information available on the Web. However, the association of tags is totally arbitrary so that the use of synonyms, homonyms and new slang terms often hampers the Web information retrieval. Our project proposes the development of an innovative social bookmarking system based on a priori classification with semantic tags and structured categories extracted from online linguistic resources, which aims at disambiguating Web Content. According to this approach, each content will be described through two axes: a vertical one, concerning a hierarchical taxonomic classification and a horizontal one, dealing with a folksonomic classification. The final aim is to create a collaborative knowledge base of semantically disambiguated contents and to achieve more precise results in Web retrieval.

RNA interference(RNAi) is the method which controls phenotypes of gene in live cells. Chitinase is the enzyme helping digestion and absorption of old cuticles during the ecdysis of insects. In order to investigate molting-inhibition effect with the chitinase related gene in Spodoptera litura, RNA was extracted from the 5th instars. cDNA was synthesized and then we obtained about 645bp size chitinase. After PCR products were cloned into a pGEM T-easy vector, colonies were picked. DNA was extracted from the colony cultures. EcoR I enzyme was used to check whether PCR products were inserted or not. To synthesize the dsRNA, each DNA was cut with Spe I and Nco I enzymes. After synthesis, of dsRNA, approximately 5ul dsRNA was injected into the 3rd abdominal segment of S. litura 4th larvae. We confirmed insects that were phenotypically abnormal - for instance molting inhibition, change of integument color, malformation.

Furfural (FUR) was produced from xylose using a biphasic batch reaction system. Water-immiscibleorganic solvents such as isophorone, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF) and cyclopentyl methyl ether(CPME) were used to promptly extract FUR from the aqueous phase in order to avoid the degradation tohumins as largely as possible. The effect of time, temperature, organic solvent and organic-to-aqueousratio on xylose conversion and FUR yield were investigated in auto-catalyzed conditions. Experiments atthree temperatures (170, 190 and 210 C) were carried out in a stirred microwave-assisted batch reactor,which established the optimal conditions for achieving the highest FUR yield. The maximum FUR yieldsfrom xylose were 78 mol% when using CPME, 48 mol% using isophorone and 71 mol% in the case of 2-MTHF at an aqueous to organic phase ratio of 1:1 (v/v). Birch hydrolysate was also used to show the highfurfural yield that can be obtained in the biphasic system under optimized conditions. The present studysuggests that CPME can be used as a green and efficient extraction solvent for the conversion of xyloseinto furfural without salt addition.
