Methods: We collated and reviewed previously conducted review studies on border closures during infectious disease outbreaks to derive relevant themes and factors. Results: According to our systematic review on border closures and travel restrictions, the effects of such containment efforts are limited. We suggest considering the following factors when determining whether to impose border closure measures: (1) disease characteristics, (2) timeliness of implementation, (3) transmission delay and the basic reproduction number, (4) globalization and pandemics, and (5) social and economic costs. Conclusions: Our assessment indicates that the effects of border closures are at best temporary and limited. Alternative measures must be contemplated and implemented to suppress the spread of COVID-19 in particular and infectious diseases more broadly.

        전문직공무원의 성과에 관한 연구 : 전문직공무원과 일반공무원의 인식비교를 중심으로

        본 연구는 “공직의 전문성 강화를 위한 탐색적 고찰: 전문직공무원 제도를 중심으로”(조태준, 2020)의 후속 연구이다. 본 연구는 규범적 차원에서 전문직공무원 제도의 성과를 연구한 선행연구의 한계를 개선하기 위한 목적으로 조직행태의 차원에서 전문직공무원 제도의 성과를 실증하는 데 초점을 두었다. 전문직공무원 제도의 설계를 위한 기반 연구였던 조태준 외(2016)는 전문직공무원에게 적용되는 인사관리 방식의 차이로 인해 전문직공무원 개인의 긍정적인 행태변화가 나타날 것으로 가정하였다. 본 연구는 혁신행동, 직무몰입, 그리고 심리적 임파워먼트라는 세 가지의 변수에 대한 전문직공무원과 일반공무원의 인식 차이를 비교함으로써 전문직공무원의 긍정적인 행태변화 가능성을 실증하였다. 분석 결과, 전문직공무원은 혁신행동, 직무몰입, 그리고 심리적 임파워먼트라는 변수에서 일반공무원에 비해 통계적으로 유의미한 수준에서 높은 평균값을 보였다. 즉, 조태준 외(2016)가 가정한 전문직공무원 도입에 따른 개인 차원의 긍정적 행태변화 가능성을 실증하였다. 또한, 분석 결과를 근거로 전문직공무원 제도의 함의를 토론하고 향후 확대 필요성을 제안하였다. This study is a follow-up article titled “Exploratory analysis on strengthening public professionalism: Focusing on institutions for improving public professionalism” (Cho, 2020). To improve the previous study’s limitations concerning the normative approaches, this study focuses on demonstrating how professional civil service system performs in terms of organizational behavior. Cho et al. (2016) posited those differences in the personnel management system, which would improve the positive changes in behavior of professional civil servants when applied to them. Thus, this study confirms the possibility of positive changes in behavior among professional public officials by comparing the differences in the perceptions of professional and public officials relating to three variables: innovative behavior, job involvement, and psychological empowerment. For all the variables, the mean value among professional public officials was higher than that among public officials. In other words, it verifies the possibility of positive behavioral changes at the individual level in accordance with the adoption of the professional civil service system assumed by Cho et al. (2016). Furthermore, we discuss the implications of our research results for the professional civil service system and suggest that expanding the professional civil service system is necessary.

        Dietary protease improves growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal morphology of weaned pigs

        This study was conducted to evaluate effects of dietary protease (PR) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal morphology of weaned pigs. A total of 75 weaned pigs [7.06 ± 0.18 kg of average body weight (BW); 28 day old] were randomly allotted to 3 dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design (blocks = BW and sex): a diet based on corn and soybean meal to meet the requirement of crude protein (CP) as a positive control (PC; CP = 24.49%), a low protein diet as a negative control (NC; CP = 22.51%), and NC + 0.02% PR. The PR used in this study was a commercial product containing 75,000 protease units/g derived from Nocardiopsis prasina produced in Bacillus licheniformis. Pigs were fed the dietary treatments for 6 weeks and the diets containing 0.2% chromic oxide for the last week of this study. Blood, feces, ileal digesta, and ileum samples were collected from randomly selected two pigs in each pen on respective time points. Measurements were growth performance, apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter (DM), CP, and energy, frequency of diarrhea, packed cell volume (PCV), and ileal morphology of weaned pigs. Pigs fed PC and PR had higher (p < 0.05) final BW, average daily gain (ADG), and gain to feed ratio (G:F) during overall experimental period than those fed NC. Pigs fed PC and PR had higher (p < 0.05) AID or ATTD of DM, CP, or energy than those fed NC. Moreover, pigs fed PR had higher ratio between villus height and crypt depth (p < 0.05) and number of goblet cells (p < 0.05) than those fed NC. Addition of PR decreased (p < 0.05) frequency of diarrhea for the first two weeks after weaning compared with PC and NC. In addition, pigs fed PR had lower (p < 0.05) PCV on d 14 after weaning than those fed PC and NC. In conclusion, addition of PR in nursery diets with a low protein level significantly improved growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal morphology of weaned pigs

      • Development and Verification of an Alcohol Craving-Induction Tool Using Virtual Reality: Craving Characteristics in Social Pressure Situation

        <P>Alcoholism is a disease that affects parts of the brain that control emotion, decisions, and behavior. Therapy for people with alcoholism must address coping skills for facing high-risk situations. Therefore, it is important to develop tools to mimic such conditions. Cue exposure therapy (CET) provides high-risk situations during treatment, which raises the individual's ability to recognize that alcohol craving is being induced. Using CET, it is hard to simulate situations that induce alcohol craving. By contrast, virtual reality (VR) approaches can present realistic situations that cannot be experienced directly in CET. Therefore, we hypothesized that is possible to model social pressure situations using VR. We developed a VR system for inducing alcohol craving under social pressure situations and measured both the induced alcohol craving and head gaze of participants. A 2 x 2 experimental model (alcohol-related locality vs. social pressure) was designed. In situations without an avatar (no social pressure), more alcohol craving was induced if alcohol was present than if it was not. And more alcohol craving was induced in situations with an avatar (social pressure) than in situations without an avatar (no social pressure). The difference of angle between the direction of head gazing and the direction of alcohol or avatar was smaller in situations with an avatar alone (social pressure) than in situations with alcohol alone. In situations with both alcohol and an avatar, the angle between the direction of head gaze and the direction of the avatar was smaller than between the direction of head gaze and the direction of the alcohol. Considering the results, this VR system induces alcohol craving using an avatar that can express various social pressure situations.</P>

      • Application of Fats and Oils in Food Industry

        Macronutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids, and protein all contribute to the body’s energy needs. To maintain a healthy body while minimizing risk for chronic disease, people need a balanced diet. Dietary reference intakes suggest that adults consume 45% to 65% of their total calories from carbohydrates, 20% to 35% from lipids, and 10% to 35% from protein. So, the quantity and quality of lipids intake is very important for the human being. Two fatty acids are known to be essential for humans: α-linolenic acid (an ω-3 fatty acid) and linoleic acid (an ω-6 fatty acid). These essential fatty acids are available in nature, such as ω-3 fatty acids in salmon, canola oil, and flax oil and ω-6 fatty acids in safflower oil, sunflower oil, and corn oil. Amongst all, the best combination of ω-3 and ω-6 fatty acid is found in soybean oil. Nevertheless, not every oil and fat are health friendly. Saturated fats, trans fats, and dietary cholesterol are not at all required in a diet. Since there are no lipids composed of 100% saturated or 100% unsaturated fatty acids in nature, the recommendation is to keep intake of these nutrients as low as possible while consuming an adequate diet. In addition to providing nutrients, fat play a variety of roles in the food industry such as carriers of lipid soluble vitamins, flavoring agents, and heating media. Depending on the type of food, different types and amounts of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are required. Broadly, the application of processed food varies according to four characteristics: melting point and melting profile, crystallization characteristics, storage stability, nutritional requirements. Also, polar lipids do very important role in food industry as well as in our body. They not only sustain cell life, but also act as emulsifiers, mixing oil and water, in various foods such as milk and dressings possible. The main functions and applications of fats and oils in the food industry will be further reviewed in this presentation.

      • Development and evaluation of ankle muscle trainer with malleolar and subtalar movement actuators and underfoot reaction force sensors during active ankle dorsi-plantarflexion

        Stroke patients have reduced kinematic characteristics in gait speed, cadence, step kinematics, and range of motion (ROM). Especially, a drop foot is a common symptom during gait after stroke due to the weakness of ankle dorsiflexor. A few robotic ankle systems have been developed to measure and train pathological ankle movements. However, the previously developed systems use orthogonal ankle axis system which reproduces unnatural human ankle movements. So we have developed a robotic device that considers anatomical ankle axes in order to train ankle muscles and to measure the quantities of ankle ROM, and forefoot and hindfoot ground reaction force. We recruited 10 healthy elderly with no history of neurological disorders. Subjects performed a total of three trials with eight repetitions or more of ankle dorsi-plantarflexion using AMT. To investigate the validity of ankle angle measurements in developed AMT, we compared AMT outputs with output ankle kinematics from VICON motion capturing system. We found similar ankle movement pattern between AMT and VICON during active ankle dorsi-plantarflexion movement. The kinematics measured from AMT ankle ROM had a significant correlation with VICON ankle ROM (r = .958, n = 10, p = .00001). Therefore, we confirmed that the validity of ankle angle measurement in developed AMT.

      • Over 95% of large-scale length uniformity in template-assisted electrodeposited nanowires by subzero-temperature electrodeposition

        <P>In this work, we report highly uniform growth of template-assisted electrodeposited copper nanowires on a large area by lowering the deposition temperature down to subzero centigrade. Even with highly disordered commercial porous anodic aluminum oxide template and conventional potentiostatic electrodeposition, length uniformity over 95% can be achieved when the deposition temperature is lowered down to -2.4°C. Decreased diffusion coefficient and ion concentration gradient due to the lowered deposition temperature effectively reduces ion diffusion rate, thereby favors uniform nanowire growth. Moreover, by varying the deposition temperature, we show that also the pore nucleation and the crystallinity can be controlled.</P>
