<P>To identify the effects of acute and chronic γ-irradiation in Arabidopsis plants, physiological responses and antioxidant-related gene expression were investigated. Seedlings were exposed to 200 Gy of γ-irradiation in acute manner for 1 or 24 h (A1 and A24) or in chronic manner for 1, 2, or 3 weeks (C1 W, C2 W, and C3 W). Plant height, silique number, and silique length in A1 and A24 irradiated plants were significantly reduced when compared to non-irradiated plants. Silique number decreased in response to both acute and chronic irradiation, except with the C3 W treatment, and the number of trichomes dramatically increased in A1 and C1 W. Electron spin resonance signal intensities increased in A1 and in all chronically irradiated plants, but decreased in the A24-treated plant. To investigate the effects of acute and chronic γ-irradiation on antioxidant enzymes, we examined activity of four antioxidant enzymes: catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase. In general, POD and CAT activities decreased in response to acute and chronic γ-irradiation. Oligonucleotide microarrays were used to investigate transcriptional changes after irradiation. Several genes related to reactive oxygen species signaling were up-regulated after acute and chronic exposure, including genes encoding heat shock factors, zinc finger proteins, NADPH oxidase, WRKY DNA-binding proteins, and calcium binding proteins. Taken together, our data indicate that the responses and activation of antioxidant systems prompted by irradiation exposure are dependent upon the γ-ray dose rate.</P>

Seventeen kenaf varieties collected from several regions around Asia and Europe were grown in Korea and their genetic diversity was analyzed using morphological characters and AFLP technique. In the morphological analysis, the 17 varieties were divided into two major groups according to stem diameter, plant height, and flowering periods. The late varieties, which could yield more bio-mass compared with the early-medium varieties, were included in one of two major groups. Nonetheless, it is difficult to identify individual varieties based on morphological characters because of their limited variation. For the AFLP analysis, 34 primer combinations generated a total of 3,193 polymorphic bands (out of 3,914) with a polymorphic rate of 82%. The clusters were divided into two major groups with a similarity coefficient of 0.63 by UPGMA analysis method; but each group did not show a common tendency. Additionally, the results of the AFLP analysis did not show similar tendency compared with morphological data, a result that might be explained in terms of convergent evolution, i.e. the acquisition of morphologically similar traits between distinctly unrelated varieties.

<P>Purpose: To determine the efficacy and safety of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and main portal vein (MPV) invasion. Materials and Methods: This study was approved by the institutional review board, and the requirement to obtain informed consent was waived. The authors retrospectively assessed the electronic medical records of patients in whom HCC with MPV invasion was newly diagnosed from January 2004 to December 2007 at a single tertiary medical center. Patients with decompensated hepatic function were excluded. Outcomes of patients treated with TACE were compared with those of patients given supportive care according to Child-Pugh class. Results: One hundred twenty-five patients (104 men and 21 women; mean age, 55.7 years; age range, 33.4-83.0 years) were included. The median overall survival was 3.7 months (range, 0.2-33.3 months). Eighty-three of the 125 patients (66.4%) were treated with TACE and 42 (33.6%) received supportive care. Repeated TACE showed significant survival benefits compared with supportive care in patients with Child-Pugh class A (median survival, 7.4 months vs 2.6 months, respectively; P < .001) and class B (median survival, 2.8 months vs 1.9 months, respectively; P = .002) disease. Results of multivariate analysis showed that treatment with TACE (hazard ratio, 0.263; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.164, 0.424; P < .001) and Child-Pugh class A status (hazard ratio, 0.550; 95% CI: 0.368, 0.822; P = .004) were independent predictive factors of a favorable outcome. There were no procedure-related deaths within 4 weeks after TACE, and patient morbidity was 28.9% (24 of 83 patients). Conclusion: TACE can be performed safely and may improve the overall survival of patients with HCC and MPV invasion. © RSNA, 2011.</P>

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>To facilitate selective and enhanced drug delivery to hepsin (Hpn)-expressing cancer cells, RIPL peptide (IPLVVPLRRRRRRRRC, 16-mer)-conjugated nanostructured lipid carriers (RIPL-NLCs) were developed.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>NLCs were prepared using a solvent emulsification-evaporation method and the RIPL peptide was conjugated to the maleimide-derivatized NLCs via the thiol-maleimide reaction. Employing a fluorescent probe (DiI), in vitro target-selective intracellular uptake behaviors were observed using fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. Separately, docetaxel (DTX) was encapsulated by pre-loading technique, then cytotoxicity and drug release were evaluated. In vivo antitumor efficacy was investigated in BALB/c nude mice with SKOV3 cell tumors after intratumoral injections of different DTX formulations at a dose equivalent to 10 mg/kg DTX.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>RIPL-NLCs showed positively charged nanodispersion, whereas NLCs were negatively charged. DTX was successfully encapsulated with an encapsulation efficiency and drug loading capacity of 95–98% and 44-46 µg/mg, respectively. DTX release was diffusion-controlled, revealing the best fit to the Higuchi equation. Cellular uptake of DiI-loaded RIPL-NLCs was 8.3- and 6.2-fold higher than that of DiI-loaded NLCs, in Hpn(+) SKOV3 and LNCaP cells, respectively. The translocation of RIPL-NLCs into SKOV3 cells was time-dependent with internalization within 1 h and distribution throughout the cytoplasm after 2 h. DTX-loaded RIPL-NLCs (DTX-RIPL-NLCs) revealed dose-dependent in vitro cytotoxicity, while drug-free formulations were non-cytotoxic. In SKOV3-bearing xenograft mouse model, DTX-RIPL-NLCs significantly inhibited tumor growth: the inhibition ratios of the DTX solution-treated and DTX-RIPL-NLC-treated groups were 61.4% and 91.2%, respectively, compared to those of the saline-treated group (control).</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>RIPL-NLCs are good candidates for Hpn-selective drug targeting with a high loading capacity of hydrophobic drug molecules.</P>
Perspectives and advances in probiotics and the gut microbiome in companion animals

As the number of households that raise dogs and cats is increasing, there is growing interest in animal health. The gut plays an important role in animal health. In particular, the microbiome in the gut is known to affect both the absorption and metabolism of nutrients and the protective functions of the host. Using probiotics on pets has beneficial effects, such as modulating the immune system, helping to reduce stress, protecting against pathogenic bacteria and developing growth performance. The goals of this review are to summarize the relationship between probiotics/the gut microbiome and animal health, to feature technology used for identifying the diversity of microbiota composition of canine and feline microbiota, and to discuss recent reports on probiotics in canines and felines and the safety issues associated with probiotics and the gut microbiome in companion animals.

2019년부터 2022년까지 제주도 올리브(olive, Olea europaea)에서 발생하는 해충을 조사한 결과, 총 15종의 해충이 확인되었다. 이중 나방류와 노린재류의 발생과 과실 피해가 매우 심했다. 나방류는 수수꽃다리명나방(Palpita nigropunctalis), 큰점애기잎말이나방(Aterpia circumfluxana), 차잎밀아나방(Homona magnanima), 차애모무늬잎말이나방(Adoxophyes honmai) 순으로 많이 발생하였다. 나방류 해충은 주로 잎을 가해했지만, 수수꽃다리명나방은 과실피해도 심하게 유발하였다. 노린재류로는 갈색날개노린재(Plautia stali), 썩덩나무노린재(Halyomorpha halys), 풀색노린재(Chinavia hilaris)가 주로 발생하여 과실 피해를 유발하였다. 깍지벌레류인 갈색깍지벌레(Chrysomphalus bifasciculatus)와 뽕나무깍지벌레(Pseudaulacaspis pentagona)는 무방제 시 과실에도 발생하여 피해를 주었다. 진딧물과 해충은 국내 미기록종인 올리브면충(신칭, Prociphilus oleae)만이 발생하였고, 갈색나무매미충(Ricania shantungensis)도 올리브에 처음 발생이 확인되었다. 국내 미기록종인 올리브철모깍지벌레(신칭, Saissetia olea)은 발견되었으나 방제후 더이상 발생하지 않았다. 이외 천공성 해충이 올리브에 심각한 피해를 유발하였으나, 종은 확인되지 않았다. Fifteen insect species have been identified as olive pests through a survey conducted in olive orchards on Jeju island from 2019 to 2022. The occurrence and fruit damage caused by Lepidopteran and hemipteran were significant severity. Among the moths, the order in which the population was large was as follows: Alpita nigropunctalis, Aterpia circumfluxana, Homona magnanima, and Adoxophyes honmai. These lepidopteran species primarily caused damage to leaves, but P. nigropunctalis inflicted severe damage to the fruits by feeding on the inside. Three stink bugs, namely Plautia stali, Halyomorpha halys, and Chinavia hilaris, were commonly observed and responsible for damaging olive furits. Chrysomphalus bifasciculatus and Pseudaulacaspis pentagona were found to occur and damaged fruit in non-controlled orchard. Prociphilus oleae, which is being recognized for the first time in Korea, and Ricania shantungensis discovered for the first timein olive orchard. Saissetia olea, a quarantine pest, was found in one farm, but subsequent pesticide spraying resulted in their elimination. Although severe damage was inflicted upon the olives, no perforated pests were found during the survey.
