      • Introduction: Understanding Neo-nomadic Mobilities beyond Self-actualisation

Fabiola Mancinelli ; Noel B. Salazar Academy of Mobility Humanities 2023 Mobility Humanities Vol.2 No.2

In 2018, Noel Salazar presented a paper at the 5th World Humanities Forum in Busan, South Korea, entitled “Moveo Ergo Sum: Mobility as Vital to Humanity and Its (Self)image,” in which he reflected on the existential need for people to move. Moveo ergo sum became the motto for the 2021 Global Mobility Humanities Conference (GMHC), encouraging us to think about the multiple ways in which mobility intersects with the construction of modern subjectivities (Salazar, “Introduction”). The expression recalled a quote from one of Fabiola Mancinelli’s research participants, a digital nomad from the US, whose words and unusual biography as a location-independent entrepreneur read like a declaration of selfactualisation through mobility, the desire to realise her full potential by constantly putting herself outside her comfort zone: “Travel is who I am, and this is not negotiable” (426). This remarkable coincidence was the trigger for us to propose the panel “Understanding Neonomadic Mobilities beyond Self-actualisation” to unpack the mobility-identity nexus as an analytical lens to explore the phenomenon of contemporary nomads.

Functional Properties and Acceptability of Potentially Medicinal Tea Infusions Based on Equisetum arvense, Desmodium molliculum , and Mentha piperita

        Johonathan Salazar-Campos,Orlando Salazar-Campos,Osmar Galvez-Ruiz,Herlita Gavidia-Chavez,Mery Gavidia-Chavez,Lorena Irigoin-Guevara,Jesus Obregon-Dominguez 한국식품영양과학회 2023 Preventive Nutrition and Food Science Vol.28 No.4

Natural herbal teas are one of the three most consumed beverages in the world, and despite their frequent use in the cosmetic, food, and pharmaceutical industries, there is still much to about them. This study aimed to determine the functional properties of tea infusions made from dried Equisetum arvense (EA), Desmodium molliculum (DM), and Mentha piperita (M) grown in the Peruvian Andes. Next, using a simplex design with unrestricted centroid amplified centroid, 12 combinations were obtained for the combination of dried leaves with EA: 0∼100%, DM: 0∼100%, and M: 0∼100% optimal combination of EA: 6.59%, DM: 84.62%, and M: 8.79% maximizes functional components for total polyphenols (2,831.18 mg EAG/100 g), flavonoids (37.73 mg CAT/g), and antioxidant capacity (145.99 mol Trolox/g). It can be confirmed that dried mixtures of these plants made into tea are a significant source of bioactive molecules, have a tolerable flavor, and can be used for therapeutic purposes when consumed.

      • Methodology for the Observations of Stellar Occultations by Small Bodies of the Solar System

Salazar-Manzano, Luis E.,Quintero, Edwin A. The Korean Space Science Society 2021 Journal of astronomy and space sciences Vol.38 No.1

The observation of stellar occultations constitutes one of the most important techniques for determining the dimensions and establishing the physical parameters of small Solar System bodies. The most substantial calculations are obtained from multiple observations of the same event, which turns the observation of stellar occultations into highly collaborative work and groups teams of observers through international networks. The above situation also requires the participation of both professional and amateur observers in these collaborative networks. With the aim of promoting the participation of professional and amateur groups in the collaborative observation of stellar occultations, we present the methodology developed by the Astronomical Observatory of the Technological University of Pereira (OAUTP) for the observations of occultations due small Solar System bodies. We expose the three fundamental phases of the process: the plan to make observations, the capture of the events, and the treatment of the data. We apply our methodology using a fixed station and a mobile station to observe stellar occultations due to MBAs (354) Eleonora (61) Danae (15112) Arlenewolfe (3915) Fukushima (61788) 2000 QP181 (425) Cornelia (257) Silesia (386) Siegena and (41) Daphne, and due to TNOs 1998BU48 and (529823) 2010 PP81. The positive detections for the objects (257) Silesia (386) Siegena and (41) Daphne allow us to derive lower limits in the diameter of the MBAs of 63.1 km, 166.2 km and 158.7 km and offsets in the astrometric position (Δαc cosc, Δc) of 622.30 ± 0.83, 15.23 ± 9.88 mas, 586.06 ± 1.68, 43.03 ± 13.88 mas and -413.44 ± 9.42, 234.05 ± 19.12 mas, respectively.

Cell Wall Localization of Two DUF642 Proteins, BIIDXI and TEEBE, during Meloidogyne incognita Early Inoculation

Salazar-Iribe, Alexis,Zuniga-Sanchez, Esther,Mejia, Emma Zavaleta,Gamboa-deBuen, Alicia The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2017 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.33 No.6

The root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita infects a variety of plants, including Arabidopsis thaliana. During migration, root-knot nematodes secrete different proteins to modify cell walls, which include pectolytic enzymes. However, the contribution of host cell wall proteins has not been described during this process. The function of two DUF642 cell wall proteins, BIIDXI (BDX, At4g32460) and TEEBE (TEB, At2g41800), in plant development could be related to the regulation of pectin methyl esterification status in the cell walls of different tissues. Accordingly, the expression of these two genes is up-regulated by auxin. BDX and TEB were highly induced during early M. incognita inoculation. Moreover, cell wall localization of the proteins was also induced. The cell wall localization of BDX and TEB DUF642 proteins during M. incognita early inoculation suggested that these two proteins could be involved in the regulation of the degree of pectin methylation during cell separation.

A new controllable capillary-type standard leak for vacuum applications

Salazar Mary Ness,송한욱,우삼용,Kim Min-Seok 한국물리학회 2023 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.83 No.9

A standard leak is a device that, under prescribed conditions, emits the fow of a specifed gas through a leak element at a controlled leak rate. This standard leak measures leaks quantitatively, a specifcation criterion in sealed vessels. The standard leak currently used in the industry is expensive, and there are limitations in developing the desired leak quantitatively. In this study, we tried to develop a standard leak that can be made inexpensively and easily calculable. A standard leak artifact was fabricated using a commercial capillary tube with micro-scale diameters made of fused silica. The developed standard leak was produced in various lengths and diameters, and their leak rate values were measured using the pressure rise method. Leak rates to 10–10 Pa m3 s −1 were observed with a relative expanded uncertainty of 22%. The results of this experiment showed that the material used was suitable for a standard leak, and it was possible to produce various standard leaks by controlling the geometry of the leak element.

Thermal shock resistance of mullite/Sr-celsian/zirconia composites

        Rodríguez-Salazar P.,Almanza-Robles J. M.,Cortés-Hernández D. A.,Escobedo-Bocardo J. C. 한국세라믹학회 2022 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.59 No.6

The thermal shock resistance of novel mullite /Sr-celsian /zirconia composites was studied. The eff ect of the Sr-celsian (15, 20, 25 wt.%) and ZrO 2 (5, 15, 25 wt.%) amounts on the thermal shock resistance, was evaluated. The composites were obtained at 1450 °C. Thermal shock resistance was performed by heating samples up to a selected temperature (∆ T = 200–1000 °C) and then suddenly immersed in water. After testing, the bending strength was evaluated and the results were statistically analyzed using Minitab with a confi dence level of 0.05. Pareto charts showed that Sr-celsian and zirconia content have the highest infl uence on fl exural strength after thermal shock. The highest thermal shock resistance was obtained for the composites with the highest amount of zirconia and Sr-celsian. Most of the composites showed a decrease in strength of around 75%. The strength of the composites with 20 or 25 wt.% of celsian and 25 wt.% zirconia increased at ∆ T of 1000 °C. The Pareto chart for these composites showed that zirconia has the highest eff ect on strength. A change in expansion is shown between 800 and 900 °C, indicating the transformation of monoclinic to tetragonal zirconia. This transformation generates microc- racks that defl ect cracks generated during thermal stress. Also, residual stresses are generated during cooling which plays a role in absorbing the energy of a generated crack. The strontium celsian forms an interlocked microstructure that improves strength. These composites are promising materials for applications in which sudden and extreme temperature changes occur.

Influence of doping on chain-like TiO2 clusters: A DFT study

        M. Salazar-Villanueva,A. Bautista Hernandez,J.J. Quijano Briones,E. Chigo Anota,F. Severiano Carrillo 한국물리학회 2016 Current Applied Physics Vol.16 No.2

DFT calculations were carried out to determine the electronic and structural properties of titanium dioxide clusters either pristine or doped. In this work, a maximum size of approximately 1.5 nm for the three cases was considered. There are no drastic changes concerning the geometry for larger clusters; however there is an important reduction of electronic gap for doped clusters compared to pristine ones in all range considered. The pristine clusters enhance the visible-light photocatalytic activity, whereas those of systems doped with one nitrogen and carbon atom exhibit a spectral shift in the near-infra-red region due to the introduction of additional electronic states originating from the N and C 2p orbitals in the band gap.

Dissipation of energy in steel frames with PR connections

        Reyes-Salazar, Alfredo,Haldar, Achintya Techno-Press 2000 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.9 No.3

The major sources of energy dissipation in steel frames with partially restrained (PR) connections are evaluated. Available experimental results are used to verify the mathematical model used in this study. The verified model is then used to quantify the energy dissipation in PR connections due to hysteretic behavior, due to viscous damping and at plastic hinges if they are formed. Observations are made for two load conditions: a sinusoidal load applied at the top of the frame, and a sinusoidal ground acceleration applied at the base of the frame representing a seismic loading condition. This analytical study confirms the general behavior, observed during experimental investigations, that PR connections reduce the overall stiffness of frames, but add a major source of energy dissipation. As the connections become stiffer, the contribution of PR connections in dissipating energy becomes less significant. A connection with a T ratio (representing its stiffness) of at least 0.9 should not be considered as fully restrained as is commonly assumed, since the energy dissipation characteristics are different. The flexibility of PR connections alters the fundamental frequency of the frame. Depending on the situation, it may bring the frame closer to or further from the resonance condition. If the frame approaches the resonance condition, the effect of damping is expected to be very important. However, if the frame moves away from the resonance condition, the energy dissipation at the PR connections is expected to be significant with an increase in the deformation of the frame, particularly for low damping values. For low damping values, the dissipation of energy at plastic hinges is comparable to that due to viscous damping, and increases as the frame approaches failure. For the range of parameters considered in this study, the energy dissipations at the PR connections and at the plastic hinges are of the same order of magnitude. The study quantitatively confirms the general observations made in experimental investigations for steel frames with PR connections; however, proper consideration of the stiffness of PR connections and other dynamic properties is essential in predicting the dynamic behavior.
