      • R-Curve Behavior of Silicon Nitride at Elevated Temperatures

        R-curve, of three kinds of silicon nitride-based ceramics were measured, using single edge notched beam (SENB) method at room and at elevated temperatures, up to $1200^{\circ}C$. Stable fraacture was seen on ceramic materials with SENB specimens if the machined notch is deep enough, even though the crack resistance did not increase with crack length. Hot pressed silicon nitride did not show the rising R-curve behavior at room temperature, but it showed some rising at $1000^{\circ}C$ and above. Si3N4 reinforced with SiC whiskers showed no rising behavior at room and elevated temperatures, as it has smaller grain size, compare to the monolithic specimen. Gas pressure sintered silicon nitride had very large and elongated grains, and it showed rising R-curve even at room temperature. However, it showed some creep behavior at $1200^{\circ}C$ and the calculated R-curve on this condition did not show a good result. We cannot apply this technique on this condition for obtaining the R-curve.

      • Consideration about Resident Participation Activities for Maintenance and Use OPen Space with Community Development in Hachioji New Town

        Maintenance open spaces and community development in large scale housing development is one of the most important issues. We(UDC) established a resident participation activity for maintenance and use open space with community development in Hachioji New Town from 1997. The purpose of this study is to establish resident participation activities for maintenance and use open space with community development in Hajichioji New Town, and to clarify the characteristics and to on sider about efficiency of the activity. We established Minamino Shizen-Juku as a methodology for maintenance and use open spaces at the same time Hachioji New Town was opened in 1997. The activity has continued by now in 2001. We conducted questionnaire survey to make sure efficiency and characteristics of the activity past three years. Minamino Shizen-Juku (nature friendly lessons) is a resident participation activity in Hachioji New Town. It was established in 1997 as soon as the new town was opened, this year is fifth since it was started. It has three objects. 1)Maintenance and use woody environment, 2) Community development, 3) Continuation and renewal native culture. And it has general course, three special courses and one extra course were established in the activity. 1) General course is an activity participated all of member. It's included farming experience in the native field and seasonal events. 2) Rice growing and woods maintenance course is rice growing and wild wood maintenance in the park as a series of annual farming activities. 3) Benefaction from farm course is started from planting spring vegetable at Mizukoshi(Leader of Minamino Shezen-Juku)'s field. There is the number of participant limit because of the area of the field. 4) Watching nature course is watching seasonal wild flowers, trees, animals and plants to know about native nature. 5) Extra program is programmed to know about native history and tradition. It's planned including participant's ideas. Not member can participate in this course too.

        学習者主体の作文授業-自分に向き合い、自分を表現する授業の実践報告-

        This article presents a practical report about the composition classes for the Korean learners of Japanese who were engaged in job hunting. These classes provided the learners with the opportunities to reflect upon themselves and express their positive characteristics and strong points in Japanese through several activities such as the writing of job application forms. The present study conducted a questionnaire test (including a self-reflection description) in 3 classes, targeting the 57 learners in total, who have studied Japanese around 6 years. These surveys revealed the following points. First, there were several learners who had not reflect upon themselves in a systematic manner, and the classroom activities were particularly significant for these learners. Second, the activities positively changed the learners’ attitudes towards their future careers. An essay was assigned to each learner at the end of the course, and the analysis of these essays submitted indicates that self-awareness was observed at the meta-level in the one-third of the learners. Based on these findings, it is concluded that the present attempt has contributed to the deepening of self-examination of the learners. Further, it is suggested that in organizing a class, an important role is played by the interplay amongst learners as well as the interplay between learners and the people surrounding them (such as family members and friends).

        Examining the factors influencing leaf disease intensity of Kalopanax septemlobus (Thunb. ex Murray) Koidzumi (Araliaceae) over multiple spatial scales: from the individual, forest stand, to the regions in the Japanese Archipelago

        We investigated leaf disease intensity of Kalopanax septemlobus (prickly castor oil tree) caused by the parasitic fungus Mycosphaerella acanthopanacis, in thirty natural host populations in the Japanese Archipelago. The disease intensity observed for individual trees were analyzed using a generalized additive model as a function of tree size, tree density, climatic terms and spatial trend surface. Individual tree size and conspecific tree density were shown to have significant negative and positive effects on disease intensity, respectively. The findings suggest that the probability of disease infection is partly determined by dispersal of infection agents (ascospores) from the fallen leaves on the ground, which can be enhanced by aggregation of host trees in a forest stand. Regional-scale spatial bias was also present in disease intensity; the populations in northern Japan and southern Kyushu were more severely infected by the fungus than those in southwestern Honshu and Shikoku. Regional variation of disease intensity was explained by both climatic factors and a trend surface term, with a latitudinal cline detected, which increases towards the north. Further research should be conducted in order to understand all of the factors generating the latitudinal cline detected in this study.

        連体修飾形指示表現にみられる例示指示と唯一指示

        . A comprehensive account of the adnominal demonstrative expressions of contemporary Japanese has not been developed in the literature. In this article, we will address the six groups of adnominal demonstrative expressions, and reveal their functional differences through quantitative and qualitative analyses. The expressions of the kono-group refer to an entity or a single category (“unique reference”) and do not have the illustrative function of implicitly referring to other entities as an example of referents. Our analyses indicate that the expressions in the non-kono-groups are commonly characterized in that they exhibit illustrative reference but that they differ in terms of the manner of illustrative reference, the strength of illustrative reference, etc. The function of illustrative reference is especially tied to the konoyouna-group, the koushita-group, and the kouitta-group. The expressions in these groups do not have the function of unique reference. The expressions in the konoyouna-group illustratively refer to approximate referents. On the other, the expressions in the kouitta-group are associated with representative illustrations. The konna-group and the kouiu-group display both the function of illustrative reference and that of unique reference. The expressions in the konna-group tend to refer to unique entities when inherent and specific objects are referred to. Further, in the case of the cataphoric use, they may refer to unique entities when the content of referents (linguistic information) is presented sufficiently and non-excessively. Unique reference in the case of the cataphoric use is also observed in the expressions in the kouiu-group.

        役割語グループワークの授業実践 ― 韓日翻訳授業における試み ―

        役割語という言語変種に対する理解および使い分けを目指した活動は学習者にとって重要である。しかし、翻訳授業において役割語に関する活動を実施した先行研究はほとんどない。本稿は韓日翻訳授業において役割語に関するグループワークを導入した実践を報告し、その可能性や課題について考察したものである。 意識調査の結果からは、韓国人学習者と日本人留学生との間に有意な差があり、中上級日本語学習者であっても役割語は容易でないことが明らかとなった。 授業前半にはグループごとに担当する役割語を分析させた。学習者同士の話し合いによるものであったが語法や語彙のほか、音声的特徴などに関する指摘があり、特徴が概ねうまく分析できていた。ただし、翻訳の授業であることを考慮すると役割語の分析にどれほどの時間をかけるかは議論の余地がある部分だ。 授業後半には韓国語映像に対する共通語の日本語訳および役割語を使った日本語訳を作成させた。この翻訳結果をクラス全体で吟味する討論の時間があれば、いっそう有意義な活動になったと考えられる。また、今回の実践では翻訳対象を学習者に自由に選ばせたが、そうした活動に加えて、教師側が翻訳対象を選定しプロによる翻訳結果のあるものを翻訳したり、短くても様々な種類の役割語翻訳文を作ったりする活動もあると良かったと指摘できる。ほかにも改善点がいくつか提起されたが、全般的に本稿で扱ったグループワークは日本語の多様性を知ったり話し言葉を翻訳するのにいい機会になっており、日本語の実力向上を実感しうる楽しい活動であったことが授業後アンケートを通して明らかになった。 Though activities aimed at understanding and properly using role language are important for learners, there are few previous studies that have reported activities on role language especially in translation classes. This paper reports on the practice of group activities on role language in Korean-Japanese translation classes, and discusses its possibilities and points to note. The results of the survey about role language revealed that there was a significant difference between Korean learners of Japanese and native Japanese speakers, and that role language was not easy to learn even for intermediate or advanced learners. In the first half of the class, students analyzed the role language assigned to each group. In addition to usage and vocabulary, there were points made regarding phonetic characteristics, so the characteristics were generally well analyzed. However, considering that this is a translation class, it is open to discussion as to how much time should be spent on analyzing role language. In the second half of the class, they attempted to translate Korean video scripts into Japanese using role language. It would have been a more meaningful activity if there had been time for discussion to examine the translation results as a whole class. In this activity they freely chose the objects to be translated. In addition to this activity, some activities that translate what already had been translated by professionals, or activities that translate various types of role language would also have been effective. The post-class survey revealed that group activities in this report provided good opportunities not only to translate spoken words, but also to learn about the diversity of the Japanese language. Furthermore, it was revealed that fun activities helped improve Japanese language skills.

        <▼1><B>Abstract</B><P/></▼1><▼2><P>Lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with a structure of glass/FTO/TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3 with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) as the transparent top electrodes, followed by polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) over-coating were fabricated. The SWNT-based PSCs do not require expensive metal electrodes and hole-transporting materials yet produce a decent power conversion efficiency of 11.8%, owing to the densifying effect of SWNTs by PMMA. The resulting devices demonstrate reduced hysteresis, improved stability, and increased power conversion efficiency.</P></▼2>
