The Effect of Mechanochemical Treatment of Supported Catalyst on the Growth of Carbon Nanotubes
Yu, Hyung-Kyun,Kim, Jung-Sik,Lee, Byung-Il,Saito, Fumio,Ryu, Ho-Jin Korean Chemical Society 2004 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.25 No.5
As an pretreatment, a Fe$(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O-Al(OH)_3$mixture was ground by a high energy mill and used as a supported catalyst for the growth of carbon nanotubes by a thermal CVD. The crystal structure of the catalyst disordered by the grinding influenced significantly the synthesis of carbon nanotubes in a thermal CVD.

Background: Although nuclear disaster is considered rare, its effects are serious, and we must prepare a system to enable an effective response. Materials and Methods: Since 2010, we have been offering a two-day seminar to provide current nurses and radiological technologists with basic knowledge and train them in radiation emergency medicine (REM) techniques. This training offers lectures to deepen each specialty from the perspective of REM, as well as exercises on ways to handle irradiated and/or contaminated patients. Participants were expected to treat patients according to the concept of REM. Results and Discussion: All participants learn to assess and decontaminate contaminated wounds through drills. The questionnaire survey for participants indicated that participants were satisfied with this training and wanted to attend again. Conclusion: We believe that this training course will provide a valuable opportunity for medical professionals to gain knowledge and expertise in REM.
Issues Derived from Urban Mining Policy: Case Study on Automobile Electrical Components

Through the years, urban mining policy, as a means to collect valuable metals, has attracted attention. In order to spread more the concept of urban mining spread in society today, extensive and effective publicity activities are needed. At the same time, it is necessary to establish a social structure that enables interested parties to mutually collaborate. In this study, we focused on automobile electrical components in urban mining in consideration of the fact that it is easier to collect the same quality items by larger volumes than the used small-sized home appliances. Then, a comparative analysis was done in two case where the recycling company does both collection and disassembly and another one where handicapped workers do precise disassembly. By evaluating the economic efficiency of these two cases, we investigated the effectiveness of collaboration between the recycling system and social welfare institutions.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, Ag@Co3O4 core-shell hybrid nanocrystals are synthesized using a plasma discharge in water for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline solutions. A detailed analysis via electron microscopy in combination with EDS elemental mapping conclusively verifies that the reactive oxygen species generated from the plasma-assisted decomposition of water molecules govern the phase structure of the nanocrystals. Under oxidizing conditions, the Co oxide, which is more stable than the Ag oxide, provides the driving force for the segregation and preferential oxidation of Co at the surface. This leads to the formation of the core-shell architecture. The electrochemical measurements for the oxygen reduction reaction reveal that the specific activities of the Ag@Co3O4 core-shell nanocrystals are <I>ca</I>. 5.2 and 2.6 times higher than those of the pure Ag and Ag-Co alloy nanocrystals. The enhanced catalytic performance is attributed to the combination of electronic and geometric effects, which facilitates the OO bond breaking and desorption for the oxygen reduction. The insights gain through this study may serve as a foundation to design better electrochemical oxygen reduction electrocatalysts.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Ag@Co3O4 core-shell hybrid nanocrystal was formed via plasma discharge in water. </LI> <LI> The electronic structure of Ag@Co3O4 core-shell hybrid nanocrystal was modified. </LI> <LI> Ag@Co3O4 core-shell hybrid nanocrystals showed the best ORR activities. </LI> <LI> ORR was enhanced due to the combination of electronic and geometric effects. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Holocene relative sea-level changes inferred from multiple proxies on the west coast of South Korea
Song, Bing,Yi, Sangheon,Yu, Shi-Yong,Nahm, Wook-Hyun,Lee, Jin-Young,Lim, Jaesoo,Kim, Jin-Cheul,Yang, Zhongyong,Han, Min,Jo, Kyoung-nam,Saito, Yoshiki Elsevier 2018 Palaeogeography, palaeoclimatology, palaeoecology Vol.496 No.-
<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Understanding past relative sea-level (RSL) changes is crucial for predicting future coastal evolution, particularly within the context of accelerated melting of polar ice sheets due to global warming. RSL records are scarce in many regions along the Pacific coast. Here, we present a Holocene RSL curve for the west coast of South Korea based on detailed analyses of four sediment cores and the synthesis of existing sea-level index points without correction by tectonic, sediment compaction and other effects. Our record shows that the local sea level rose rapidly during the early Holocene and then fell gradually toward the present position during the late Holocene. An apparent sea-level highstand of ca. 1–2 m occurred 7–4 cal kyr B.P. A rapid sea-level rise of ~1.4 cm yr−1 during the early Holocene is a manifestation of polar ice sheet decay, while the apparent mid-Holocene sea-level highstand appears to be a signal of the hydro-isostasy of the far-field continental shelf. The result was confirmed by a glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) model. Holocene RSL change on the west coast of South Korea was closely linked to global temperature and ice sheet decay, especially during the early Holocene. There is a close relationship between sea-level change in the study area and Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) decay.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A new Holocene sea-level curve with mid-Holocene highstand was reported. </LI> <LI> A similar Holocene sea level curve was reported using a GIA model. </LI> <LI> The rapid sea-level rise is a manifestation of early Holocene polar ice sheet decay. </LI> <LI> The mid-Holocene high stand sea level is a signal of hydro-isostatic effects. </LI> </UL> </P>
