Improvement of Banana Quality by Storing in Polyethylene Bags of Different Thickness with and without Ethylene

        Saeed Ahmad,Muhamad Aslam Pervez,Raheel Anwar,AnthonyKeth Thompson 한국원예학회 2006 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.47 No.5

This research was carried out to investigate the effect of different thickness of polyethylene bags on ripening behavior and quality of ripe banana fruit. It was observed that bananas ripened in polyethylene packaging showed attractive fresh appearance with good eating quality. The effectiveness of ethylene in hastening of ripening was not reduced with CO₂ levels less than 5% and O₂ levels greater than 5% in polyethylene bags. Softness of banana fruits packed in polyethylene bags was directly proportional to weight loss. Packaging of fruit in polyethylene bags produced firmer bananas which could be beneficial in avoiding mechanical injury and some fungal infection and also extends the shelf life. Total soluble solids showed no significant difference regarding the polyethylene thickness. Packaging of bananas in 0.050 mm polyethylene bags extended the storage life of banana, but these received lower scores by panelists than those which were packed in 0.025 and 0.037 mm polyethylene bags. Packaging of bananas in 0.025 and 0.037 mm polyethylene bags was effective in achieving a more attractive appearance, freshness, and good flavor of ripe fruit than unpacked fruit and those packed in 0.050 mm polyethylene bags.

Insecticidal control of the mealybug Phenacoccus gossypiphilous (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), a new pest of cotton in Pakistan

        Shafqat SAEED,Munir AHMAD,Mushtaq AHMAD,권용정 한국곤충학회 2007 Entomological Research Vol.37 No.2

The mealybug Phenacoccus gossypiphilous (Stanley) played havoc with the cotton crop in Pakistan during 2005. To control this pest, insecticides of different groups were evaluated in both the laboratory and in field conditions. In the laboratory, bifenthrin, profenofos and chlorpyrifos proved to be the best insecticides for mealybug control, based on their susceptibility with the leaf dip method for their LC50. In field conditions, the recommended application rates of methomyl, profenofos and chlorpyrifos provided the best control: the lethal time studies proved their efficiency for better and timely control of this sporadic pest. The present study has shown that the insecticides tested, in particular profenofos, chlorpyrifos, methomyl and bifenthrin, provide satisfactory control of the cotton mealybug. The control of the insect pest complex throughout the cotton crop predominantly depends on wise and justified use of these chemicals, and necessitates development of an integrated pest management strategy.

A Fault Tolerant Data Management Scheme for Healthcare Internet of Things in Fog Computing

( Waqar Saeed ),( Zulfiqar Ahmad ),( Ali I. Jehangiri ),( Nader Mohamed ),( Arif I. Umar ),( Jamil Ahmad ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2021 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.15 No.1

Fog computing aims to provide the solution of bandwidth, network latency and energy consumption problems of cloud computing. Likewise, management of data generated by healthcare IoT devices is one of the significant applications of fog computing. Huge amount of data is being generated by healthcare IoT devices and such types of data is required to be managed efficiently, with low latency, without failure, and with minimum energy consumption and low cost. Failures of task or node can cause more latency, maximum energy consumption and high cost. Thus, a failure free, cost efficient, and energy aware management and scheduling scheme for data generated by healthcare IoT devices not only improves the performance of the system but also saves the precious lives of patients because of due to minimum latency and provision of fault tolerance. Therefore, to address all such challenges with regard to data management and fault tolerance, we have presented a Fault Tolerant Data management (FTDM) scheme for healthcare IoT in fog computing. In FTDM, the data generated by healthcare IoT devices is efficiently organized and managed through well-defined components and steps. A two way fault-tolerant mechanism i.e., task-based fault-tolerance and node-based fault-tolerance, is provided in FTDM through which failure of tasks and nodes are managed. The paper considers energy consumption, execution cost, network usage, latency, and execution time as performance evaluation parameters. The simulation results show significantly improvements which are performed using iFogSim. Further, the simulation results show that the proposed FTDM strategy reduces energy consumption 3.97%, execution cost 5.09%, network usage 25.88%, latency 44.15% and execution time 48.89% as compared with existing Greedy Knapsack Scheduling (GKS) strategy. Moreover, it is worthwhile to mention that sometimes the patients are required to be treated remotely due to non-availability of facilities or due to some infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Thus, in such circumstances, the proposed strategy is significantly efficient.

Diversity of pollinators and their role in the pollination biology of chickpea, Cicer arietinum L. (Fabaceae)

        Abdul Latif,Saeed Ahmad Malik,Shafqat Saeed,Naeem Iqbal,Qamar Saeed,Khalid Ali Khan,Chen Ting,Hamed A. Ghramh 한국응용곤충학회 2019 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.22 No.2

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is an important source of food for people worldwide. In the current study, we studied its pollination biology with special reference to floral visitors along with their visitation rate, frequency and pollen load during 2012 and 2013. We also explored the effect of floral visitors on the capsule weight, seed weight, seed numbers and seed germination. Results revealed three bees, two wasps, five flies, one moth and three butterfly species on the flowers of chickpea. Apis dorsata, A. florea, Amegilla sp. and Eristalinus aeneus were the major species with 434–474, 223–311, 69–74 and 81–136 individuals, respectively in both years. Floral visitors differed significantly in term of visitation frequency with A. florea as the most frequent visitor (9.13–9.86 visits/flower/5 min) followed by E. aeneus (5.43–5.58 visits/flower/5 min) and A. dorsata (1.72–2.31 visits/ flower/5 min) in both years. Similarly, A. florea had statistically highest visitation rate (16.85–19.99 flowers visited/min) followed by E. aeneus (9.73–10.68 flowers visited/min). A. dorsata had significantly higher pollen load on its body (84629–85,104 pollen grains) followed by A. florea (64940–65,135 pollen grains) and Amegilla sp. (64020–65,120 pollen grains). The open-pollinated flowers had significantly higher capsule weight (0.27 ± 0.01 g), seed weight (0.18 ± 0.01 g), seed numbers (1.67 ± 0.07 seeds) and seed germination (95 ± 1.38%) as compared to flowers deprived of pollinators in cages. The results suggested A. florea, A. dorsata and E. aeneus could be effective pollinators of chickpea. Hence these three species can be properly utilized on commercial scale to increase crop yield.

      • Bayesian Analysis of Power Function Distribution Using Different Loss Functions

Azam Zaka,Ahmad Saeed Akhter 보안공학연구지원센터 2014 International Journal of Hybrid Information Techno Vol.7 No.6

Power function distribution is a flexible lifetime distribution that may offer a good fit to some failure data sets. In this paper, we obtain Bayesian estimators of the shape parameter of Power function distribution. For the Posterior distribution of this parameter, we consider Exponential Prior, Pareto Prior, Chi-Square Prior, Quasi Prior and Extension of Jeffrey`s Prior. The three loss functions taken up are Squared Error Loss Function (SELF), Quadratic Loss Function (QLF) and Precautionary Loss Function (PLF). The performance of an estimator is assessed on the basis of its relative Posterior risk. Monte Carlo Simulations are used to compare the performance of the estimators. It is discovered that the PLF produces the least Posterior risk when Exponential and Pareto Priors are used. SELF is the best when Chi-Square, Quasi and Extension of Jeffrey`s Priors are used.

Role of critical concentration of PEI in NMP solutions on gas permeation characteristics of PEI gas separation membranes

Ahmad Arabi Shamsabadi,Masoud Bahrami Babaheidari,Ali Kargari,Saeed Laki,Hadi Ajami 한국공업화학회 2013 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.19 No.2

In preparation of polymeric gas separation membranes by phase inversion method, polymer concentration is one of the most important variables which can change membrane morphology and behavior. In this research, critical concentration of the polyetherimide (PEI) solutions in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a solvent was determined by viscometric method. The influence of temperature on critical concentration was studied. Three asymmetric PDMS/PEI membranes with different concentrations of PEI were prepared and characterized for H2/CH4 separation. The results showed that the membranes with higher concentrations than critical concentration were more suitable for gas separation. In addition, the viscosity data were fitted by appropriate equations and the densities were satisfactorily correlated by a simple first-order polynomial with respect to temperature and the PEI mass fraction. The prepared membrane showed the selectivity of 26 for H2/CH4 separation at 1 bar and 25 8C for pure gas and 24.8 for mixed gas. The influence of the pressure on the H2 and CH4 permeance and the selectivity for a mixed binary gas showed that the permeance of both gases declined by pressure enhancement and the selectivity increased.
