Curcuminoid–Piperine Combination Improves Radical Scavenging Activity in Women with Premenstrual Syndrome and Dysmenorrhea: A Post-hoc Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Study

        Samira Karbasi,Saman Seyedabadi,Samira Mozaffari,Zahra Foroutan,Gordon A. Ferns,Asghar Zarban,Afsane Bahrami 전남대학교 의과학연구소 2024 전남의대학술지 Vol.60 No.2

Oxidative stress maybe involved in the patho-etiology of menstrual-associated complications. Curcuminoids, are polyphenolic natural compounds that have potentially important functional activities. This triple-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was performed to investigate the effects of a curcuminoids on oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity in girls with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and dysmenorrhea. Eighty young girls with both PMS and dysmenorrhea were randomly given either curcuminoids (500 mg+5 mg piperine) or a placebo daily, for a period from 7 days pre- until 3 days post- initiation of menstrual bleeding for 3 successive menstrual cycles. The total antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activity of serum and urine were quantified via ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods, respectively. There were no significant differences between the placebo and curcumin groups, with respect to the age, dietary intake and biochemical/anthropometric indices (p>0.05). The curcumin treatment significantly increased the free-radical scavenging activity of serum compared to the treatment with placebo (p=0.031). Although, no significant changes were found in serum and urinary levels of FRAP, DPPH and MDA between the groups (p>0.05). Curcumin treatment did increase free-radical scavenging activity and antioxidant potential in girls with PMS and dysmenorrhea. Investigations with higher doses and duration of curcumin are required to verify our findings.

      • Mechanical and thermal stability investigation of functionally graded plates resting on visco-Pasternak foundation

        Samira Hassiba Tagrara,Mohamed Mehdi hamri,Mahmoud Mohamed Selim Saleh,Abdelbaki Chikh,Abdelmoumen Anis Bousahla,Abdelhakim Kaci,Fouad Bourada,Abdelouahed Tounsi 국제구조공학회 2023 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.46 No.6

This work presents a simple four-unknown refined integral plate theory for mechanical and thermal buckling behaviors of functionally graded (FG) plates resting on Visco-Pasternak foundations. The proposed refined high order shear deformation theory has a new displacement field which includes indeterminate integral variables and contains only four unknowns in which any shear correction factor not used, with even less than the conventional theory of first shear strain (FSDT). Governing equations are deduced from the principle of minimum total potential energy and a Navier type analytical solution is adopted for simply supported FG plates. The Visco-Pasternak foundations is considered by adding the impact of damping to the usual foundation model which characterized by the linear Winkler’s modulus and Pasternak’s foundation modulus. The accuracy of the present model is demonstrated by comparing the computed results with those available in the literature. Some numerical results are presented to show the impact of material index, elastic foundation type, and damping coefficient of the foundation, on the mechanical and thermal buckling behaviors of FG plates.

Induction of Apoptosis and Growth-Inhibition by Thymoquinone in ACHN and GP-293 Cell Lines in Comparable with Cis-Platinum

        Samira Shahraki,Reza Mohebbati,Mohammad Naser Shafei,Mahmoud Mahmoudi,Sara Hosseinian,Soghra Parhizgar,Zohreh Naji Ebrahimi Yazd,Nazanin Entezari Heravi,Reza Nejad Shahrokh Abadi,Abolfazl Khajavi Rad 대한약침학회 2019 Journal of pharmacopuncture Vol.22 No.3

Objective: In the current work, we investigated the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of Thymoquinone (TQ), an active compound of Nigella sativa (N. sativa) and Cis-platinum, on normal renal epithelial (GP-293) and human renal adenocarcinoma cell lines (ACHN). Methods: GP-293 and ACHN cell lines were cultured in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) with 10% Fetal bovine serum (FBS) and 1% penicillin plus streptomycin antibiotic. The MTT assay was used for cellular viability assessment. Viability of cells was observed using inverted light microscope 24, 48 and 72 h after exposure of the cells to various concentrations of TQ (1, 2.5, 5, 10, 50 and 100 μg/ml) and Cis-platinum (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 6 and 12.5 μg/ml). Moreover, apoptosis was analyzed with a flow-cytometry method. The untreated cells were considered as control group. Results: Morphological changes such as reduced cell number and increased intercellular distance and reduced cell viability in ACHN and GP-293cell lines were observed in both TQ and Cis- platinum groups; however, Cis-platinum had greater effect on ACHN cell line than GP-293 cell line. In addition, GP-293 cell line was more sensitive to TQ compared to ACHN cell line. Furthermore, TQ and Cis-platinum had apoptotic effects on both ACHN and GP-293 cell lines. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that TQ and Cis-platinum had cytotoxic and apoptotic effects on both cell lines, However, GP-293 cell line was more sensitive to TQ. Additionally, Cis-platinum was more effective on ACHN cell line than on GP-293 cell line.

Biologic Response to Carbonated Hydroxyapatite Associated with Orthopedic Device: Experimental Study in a Rabbit Model

        Samira Jebahi,Mongi Saoudi,Riadh Badraoui,Tarek Rebai,Hassane Oudadesse,Zoubaier Ellouz,Hassib Keskese,Abdelfattah El Feki,Hafed El Feki 대한병리학회 2012 Journal of Pathology and Translational Medicine Vol.46 No.1

Background: Carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA) and related calcium phosphates have been studied for many years as implant materials due to their similarity with the mineral phase of bone. The main limitation of CHA ceramics as well as other bioactive materials is that they have poor mechanical proprieties. It is thought that the mechanical device can cause an increase in metabolic activity and bone healing. In this study we investigated the reactivity and tissue behaviour of implanted CHA biomaterial reinforced by mini external fixator. Methods: The evaluation of biomaterial biocompatibility and osteogenesis was performed on a rabbit model over a period of 6 weeks by radiological, histological and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray SEM-energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Results: While rabbits treated with CHA exhibited more bone formation, and fibrous tissue was observed when empty bone defects were observed. EDX analysis detected little calcium and phosphorus on the surface of the bone that was not implanted, while high content of calcium (62.7%) and phosphorus (38%) was found on the interface bone cement. Conclusions: Bone repairing showed that the mini external fixator stimulated the ossification which was pushed when grafted by CHA. This effect may play an important role in the prevention of implant loosening.

Mechanistic Effects of Vitamin D Supplementation on Metabolic Syndrome Components in Patients with or without Vitamin D Deficiency

Samira Faraji,Mohammad Alizadeh 대한비만학회 2020 The Korean journal of obesity Vol.29 No.4

The prevalences of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and vitamin D deficiency are increasing dramatically worldwide. MetS is a major challenge because it can increase the risk of most non-communicable diseases. The beneficial effect of vitamin D on MetS components remains controversial, so the present review focused on the clinical effects of vitamin D supplementation on MetS components. Vitamin D can inhibit the protein expression of nuclear factor beta; improve arterial stiffness; decrease renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activity, parathyroid hormone levels, inflammatory cytokines, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, and lanosterol 14 α-demethylase enzyme activity; increase the activity of lipoprotein lipase; alter gene expression in C2C12 cells; and improve phospholipid metabolism and mitochondrial oxidation. We tried to elucidate and analyze almost all evidence from randomized controlled trial studies of the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation in patients with MetS. The findings of the present study reported beneficial effects of vitamin D supplementation on mentioned factors. Vitamin D supplementation is recommended in people with vitamin D deficiency even if it has no considerable effect on most MetS factors. However, existing data from interventional studies are insufficient to reach a definitive conclusion about the effect of vitamin D supplementation on MetS components in patients without vitamin D deficiency. Thus, new clinical studies are needed to test the hypothesis that vitamin D supplementation could alleviate MetS components in patients with sufficient intake of vitamin D.

Effect of Chlorella vulgaris on Liver Function Biomarkers: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

( Samira Yarmohammadi ),( Reza Hosseini-ghatar ),( Sahar Foshati ),( Mojgan Moradi ),( Niloofar Hemati ),( Sajjad Moradi ),( Mohammad Ali Hojjati Kermani ),( Mohammad Hosein Farzaei ),( Haroon Khan ) 한국임상영양학회 2021 Clinical Nutrition Research Vol.10 No.1

This study presents a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) supplementation and liver function biomarkers. Pertinent studies were identified using Scopus, ISI Web of Science, PubMed, and Cochrane library databases up to August 2020. Mean differences were pooled using a random-effects model. Pooling 7 RCTs together showed that C. vulgaris supplementation led to a significant reduction of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels (weighted mean difference [WMD], -9.15 U/L; 95% confidence interval [CI], -16.09, -2.21), but not alanine aminotransferase (ALT) or alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels compared to the placebo consumption. Subgroup-analysis indicated that C. vulgaris supplementation had more effect on AST decreasing among non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients (WMD, -16.42 U/L; 95% CI, -29.75, -3.09) than others. Furthermore, subgroup analysis based on kind of supplementation showed that C. vulgaris supplementation significantly decreased ALT levels (WMD, -4.65 U/L; 95% CI, -8.88, -0.42) compared with the placebo, but not metformin consumption. It seems that C. vulgaris supplementation mainly affects AST levels rather than ALT and ALP levels, however, as mentioned the effect of C. vulgaris on those enzymes might be context-dependent. Therefore, further investigations with a large number of patients as well as on different disorders are necessary and can provide more definitive evidence.

High-performance photovoltaics by double-charge transporters using graphenic nanosheets and triisopropylsilylethynyl/naphthothiadiazole moieties

Samira Agbolaghi,Sahar Aghapour,Somaiyeh Charoughchi,Farhang Abbasi,Raana Sarvari 한국공업화학회 2018 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.68 No.-

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets were patterned with poly[benzodithiophene-bis(decyltetradecyl-thien) naphthothiadiazole] (PBDT-DTNT) and poly[bis(triiso-propylsilylethynyl) benzodithiophene-bis(decyltetradecyl-thien) naphthobisthiadiazole] (PBDT-TIPS-DTNT-DT) and used in photovoltaics. Conductive patternings changed via surface modification of rGO; because polymers encountered a high hindrance while assembling onto grafted rGO. The best records were detected in indium tin oxide (ITO):poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS):PBDT-DTNT/rGO:PBDT-DTNT:LiF:Al devices, i.e., short current density (Jsc) = 11.18 mA/cm2, open circuit voltage (Voc) = 0.67 V, fill factor (FF) = 62% and power conversion efficiency (PCE) = 4.64%. PCE increased 2.31 folds after incorporation of PBDT-DTNT into thin films. Larger polymer assemblies on bared-rGO nanosheets resulted in greater phase separations.

A New Decentralized Implicit Adaptive Regulator for Large-scale Systems Described by Discrete-time State-space Mathematical Models

Samira Kamoun,Mohamed Kamoun 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2016 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.14 No.3

In this paper, we treat the problem of decentralized implicit adaptive regulation for large-scale stochasticsystems composed into a set of interconnected systems that are described by discrete-time state-space mathematicalmodels with unknown parameters. The key idea in the decentralized regulation method is to design localregulator using only local information such that the state of each interconnected system is regulated to a certainconstant reference signal. The main contribution is the proposition of a decentralized implicit adaptive regulatorbased on state-feedback strategy that can be applied to stochastic interconnected systems with unknown parameters. Furthermore, the practical implementation of the proposed decentralized implicit adaptive regulator can be madeeasily (low-cost implementation of the electronic components, short computation of the decentralized control law,etc.). A theorem is established and proved which gives sufficient stability conditions of the resulting closed-loopinterconnected systems by using the Lyapunov method. An example of numerical simulation is treated to test theperformance of the proposed decentralized implicit adaptive regulator.
