Surface Treatment on Titanium for the Fabrication of Bone-Compatible Materials

The aim of this study was to investigate important factors that influence on the osteoconductivity of TiO₂. TiO₂ coatings were fabricated on titanium using anodizing with their surface roughness controlled at micron-level to evaluate the influence of surface roughness. The influence of oxidizing process was also discussed by comparing wetprocess to dry-process; anodizing and high temperature oxidation. In conclusion, TiO₂ coatings improved the osteoconductivity of Ti substrates. TiO₂ coatings indicated high osteoconductivity only when Ra < 0.3 ㎛. Moreover, wet-process was better than dry-process to form osteoconductive TiO₂ coating on titanium substrate.

As the direction of development of materials that conscious not only to characters in use, but alos to their effect on environment in the near future, the concept of " Eco-materials" has been proposed. Eco-materials aims to change micro structures for obtaining good characters without the utilization of aditional elements. From this point of view, we paid attention to SCIFER (made from Kobe Steel) which is a hardened fiber due to a cold working (tensile strength shows 5GPa) and has a recyclable formation of Fe-C-Si-Mn. We tried to adhere UFP(Ultra Fine Powder) with SCIFER's surface and investigate the effects for manufacturing composites by using it. Furthermore, we assessed energy consumptions of this material from the view point of environmental evaluation of impacts caused by manufacturing and compared the other materials. Results are as follows. 1. Utilization of solution dispersed UFP made it possible to make a coating film on the surface of fiber. 2. From load-disappointment curve, fracured strength of composite which is mixed powder combined UFP 0.1 weight percentage and fibre adhered UFP uniform are mixed, shows a very high value and also ascend fracture energy remarkably. 3. According to the assessment of Fe-based composite, it proved that Fe-based composite showed lower values than sintered compacts(133373K) for an hour and aluminum(virgin material).material).
