      • Ordering Chaos : Nature and Identity Formation in Australian Narrative

Rossiter, Richard Australian Studies Institute 1998 Journal of Australian studies Vol.5 No.1

The motivation for this article began some time ago with a reading of Mary Louise Pratt's Imperial Eyes in which she gives and account of the impact of the Swedish naturalist Carl Linne - often referred to by the Latin form of his name, Linnaeus - "on travel and travel writing" (1992:24). Two sentences stood out for me. The first was the claim that his work The System of Nature changed the way "European citizens made, and made sense of, their place on the planet" (1992:24).

        FREE BANKING IN HONG KONG

        ROSSITER, R. D. 한국국제경제학회 1994 International Economic Journal Vol.8 No.1

Hong Kong has no central bank and its paper currency is issued by two private commercial banks. Cointegration tests and an error-correction model are used to examine the stability of the money supply process under pegged and floating exchange rates. Empirical evidence suggests feedback between the price level and money supply during the floating rate period but stability under a pegged rate. [E42]

DEVELOPMENT OF THE ENIGMA FUEL PERFORMANCE CODE FOR WHOLE CORE ANALYSIS AND DRY STORAGE ASSESSMENTS

Rossiter, Glyn Korean Nuclear Society 2011 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.43 No.6

UK National Nuclear Laboratory's (NNL's) version of the ENIGMA fuel performance code is described, including details of the development history, the system modelled, the key assumptions, the thermo-mechanical solution scheme, and the various incorporated models. The recent development of ENIGMA in the areas of whole core analysis and dry storage applications is then discussed. With respect to the former, the NEXUS code has been developed by NNL to automate whole core fuel performance modelling for an LWR core, using ENIGMA as the underlying fuel performance engine. NEXUS runs on NNL's GEMSTONE high performance computing cluster and utilises 3-D core power distribution data obtained from the output of Studsvik Scandpower's SIMULATE code. With respect to the latter, ENIGMA has been developed such that it can model the thermo-mechanical behaviour of a given LWR fuel rod during irradiation, pond cooling, drying, and dry storage - this involved: (a) incorporating an out-of-pile clad creep model for irradiated Zircaloy-4; (b) including the ability to simulate annealing out of the clad irradiation damage; (c) writing of additional post-irradiation output; (d) several other minor modifications to allow modelling of post-irradiation conditions.

Educating Young Koreans Spiritually, Morally and Religiously for the 21st Century: The Role of Christian Religious Education

        Graham Rossiter 한국기독교교육학회 2019 기독교교육논총 Vol.0 No.57

Christian Religious Education has traditionally given young people access to their religious heritage. While this important role has never been in question, there is a new, additional challenge for Christian religious educators to address. The widespread secularisation of contemporary society, and the extensive changes in culture, especially in digital communication, entertainment and marketing, have altered the ways in which people construct meaning, purpose and value in life – often with little reference to religion. Christian Religious Education is well placed to help educate young people to be more discerning about the shaping influence that contemporary culture can have on people’s thinking, behaviour and values. It can help them acquire knowledge and skills that will enable them to better negotiate a meaningful life in a challenging and complex culture. This can promote their spiritual and moral development. The starting point for a relevant religious education for the 21st century requires of religious educators some understanding of the complexity of contemporary globalised culture, particularly in the way it impacts on the personal development of young people. This paper will signpost some of this complexity and it will propose how issue-related content and a critical, research-oriented pedagogy may help educate young people towards addressing the challenges they face in constructing a meaningful life today. It is proposed that a critical, evaluative pedagogy is important not only for social issues, cultural analysis and personal development, but also for theological, scriptural and world religions content. An inquiring, issue-raising approach to Christian religious education has a long established tradition. But the current spiritual situation in Korean culture suggests that it may need to be become more prominent.

Antinociceptive and Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Cannabidiol Alone and in Combination with Standardized Bioflavonoid Composition

        Mesfin Yimam,Alexandria O'Neal,Teresa Horm,Ping Jiao,Mei Hong,Shayna Rossiter,Lidia Brownell,Qi Jia 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.9

Symptom-alleviating therapies for osteoarthritis (OA) management are inadequate. Long-term application of first-line treatments, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, is limited due to associated side effects. We believe that a combination of traditionally used botanical extracts, which have diverse active components that target multiple inflammatory pathways, may provide a safe and efficacious alternative to address the multifactorial nature of OA. Recently, cannabidiol (CBD), the major nonpsychoactive component of the hemp plant, has gained renewed global attention for its pharmacological actions. It has shown promise in reducing pain and inflammation in preclinical models of arthritis. In this study, widely employed inflammatory and noninflammatory animal pain models, such as the hot plate test, visceral pain model (writhing test), and carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model, were utilized to evaluate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activity of CBD alone and in combination with standardized bioflavonoid compositions. CBD was tested at 5, 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg orally and at 5% topically. Administered alone, CBD produced dose-correlated, statistically significant pain inhibition in all the models. Enhanced performance in pain and inflammation reduction was observed when CBD was orally administered in complex with the bioflavonoid compositions. Data from this study show that for clinically meaningful efficacy against OA, CBD may have to be delivered in higher dosage or formulated with other medicinal plants with similar activities.

Success rate of nitrous oxide-oxygen procedural sedation in dental patients: systematic review and meta-analysis

Rossit, Marco,Gil-Manich, Victor,Ribera-Uribe, Jose Manuel The Korean Dental Society of Anesthsiology 2021 Journal of Dental Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Vol.21 No.6

The aim of this systematic review was to determine the success rate of nitrous oxide-oxygen procedural sedation (NOIS) in dentistry. A systematic digital search was conducted for publications or reports of randomized controlled trials evaluating the clinical performance of NOIS. Abstracts of research papers were screened for suitability, and full-text articles were obtained for those who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria accordingly. The quality of the studies was assessed using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool (RoB 2). A total of 19 articles (eight randomized clinical trials with parallel intervention groups and 11 crossover trials), published between May 1988 and August 2019, were finally selected for this review. The studies followed 1293 patients reporting NOIS success rates, with a cumulative mean value of 94.9% (95% CI: 88.8-98.9%). Thirteen trials were conducted on pediatric populations (1098 patients), and the remaining six were conducted on adults (195 patients), with cumulative efficacy rates of 91.9% (95% CI: 82.5-98.1%) and 99.9% (95% CI: 97.7-100.0%), respectively. The difference was statistically significant (P = 0.002). Completion of treatment and Section IV of the Houpt scale were the most used efficacy criteria. Within the limitations of this systematic review, the present study provides important information on the efficacy rate of NOIS. However, further well-designed and well-documented clinical trials are required and there is a need to develop guidelines for standardization of criteria and definition of success in procedural sedation. Currently, completion of treatment is the most used parameter in clinical practice, though many others also do exist at the same time. To maximize NOIS efficacy, clinicians should strictly consider appropriate indications for the procedure.

Free vibrations of anisotropic rectangular plates with holes and attached masses

        Rossit, C.A.,Ciancio, P.M. Techno-Press 2008 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.28 No.1

Anisotropic materials are increasingly required in modern technological applications. Certainly, civil, mechanical and naval engineers frequently deal with the situation of analyzing the dynamical behaviour of structural elements being composed of such materials. For example, panels of anisotropic materials must sometimes support electromechanical engines, and besides, holes are performed in them for operational reasons e.g., conduits, ducts or electrical connections. This study is concerned with the natural frequencies and normal modes of vibration of rectangular anisotropic plates supported by different combinations of the classical boundary conditions: clamped, simply - supported and free, and with additional complexities such holes of free boundaries and attached concentrated masses. A variational approach (the well known Ritz method) is used, where the displacement amplitude is approximated by a set of beam functions in each coordinate direction corresponding to the sides of the rectangular plate. Consequently each coordinate function satisfies the essential boundary conditions at the outer edge of the plate. The influence of the position and magnitude of both hole and mass, on the natural frequencies and modal shapes of vibration are studied for a generic anisotropic material. The classical Ritz method with beam functions as spatial approximation proved to be a suitable procedure to solve a problem of such analytical complexity.
