[T]he focus of this paper is upon regional integration, with particular reference to the European Union and Northeast Asia. The central question it seeks to answer is whether a study of the development of the European Union(EU) holds lessons in integration for the Northeast Asian region. The search for the answer to this question leads to an examination of further questions, relating for example to the value of the EU as potential model for regional integration projucts; the problem of defining 'regional integration'; the nature of the EU; and the principal differences between the European Union and Northeast Asia with regard to regional integration. It also outlines and examines some specific potential lessons of the EU's development for other regions, in particular for Northeast Asia.
A comparison between DASL and Affymetrix on probing the whole-transcriptome

Whole-transcriptome microarray analysis has become a popular strategy to study geneexpression in cancer, exploiting the largely available formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) sample resources. However, there have been relatively few comparative studies evaluating the performance of the different gene-expression array platforms. We compared two commonly used whole-transcriptome microarray platforms: Illumina human whole genome cDNA-mediated annealing, selection extension and ligation (DASL) beadchip and Affymetrix U133 Plus2 GeneChip (Affymetrix). Gene expression data based on both platforms were collected on the same total RNA extracted from FFPE tissue samples of 221 advanced breast cancer patients. Correlations between two platforms were assessed using Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients (CCs). For both platforms we also assessed coefficient of variation, which measures relative dispersion. Finally, we compared the applicability of DASL and Affymetrix for classification of breast cancer molecular subtypes using the PAM50 classifiers. Overall, there was a statistically significant, positive gene- and patient-wise correlation between the two platforms, with stronger relationship for patient-wise CC. The relative dispersion was smaller in DASL compared to Affymetrix. The consistency in subtype classification for both microarray platforms was weak (63%). We observed weak, yet positive correlation between two platforms and different magnitudes of correlations were observed according to the metrics used.
CT myelography of the thoraco-lumbar spine in 8 dogs with degenerative myelopathy

CT myelography of the T11-L2 region was performed in 8 large-breed dogs with a clinical diagnosis of degenerative myelopathy (DM) and 3 large-breed dogs that were clinically normal. CT myelographic characteristics were recorded for each dog, at each disc level. Area measurements of the spinal cord, dural sac, vertebral canal, and vertebral body were recorded at 4 slice locations for each disc level. Mean area ratios were calculated and graphically compared, by slice location and group. In all dogs, CT myelography identified morphologic abnormalities that were not suspected from conventional myelograms. Characteristics observed with higher frequency in DM versus normal dogs were: spinal stenosis, disc protrusion, focal attenuation of the subarachnoid space, spinal cord deformity, small spinal cord, and paraspinal muscle atrophy. Mean spinal cord:dural sac, spinal cord:vertebral canal, dural sac: vertebral canal, and vertebral canal:vertebral body ratios were smaller in DM versus normal dogs at more than one disc level. Some CT myelographic characteristics in DM dogs were similar to those previously reported in humans, dogs and horses with stenotic myelopathy.

Electrochemical reduction has previously been reported for uranium oxide and mixed oxide nuclear fuel (uranium oxide, plutonium oxide). The laboratory scale electrochemical reduction of plutonium oxide powder is demonstrated in CaCl2- 1wt%CaO. The plutonium oxide contained within a permeable steel basket cathode is sacrificed during the process. A graphite anode is also employed during the reduction, leading to a significant contamination of the product.
