<P>We suggested that the neutral line is a more effective location for a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) in a three-phase power system. To confirm it, we analyzed the quench and recovery characteristics of SFCL applied into the neutral line in cases of non-symmetrical ground faults, such as single line-to-ground and double line-to-ground faults. Through a comparative analysis based on the experimental results for two SFCLs applied either to the neutral line or to the three-phase power line, it was confirmed that the SFCL applied into the neutral line of the power system was more advantageous from the viewpoint of both the practical use of the SFCL and the SFCL's coordination with other related protective devices in the power system.</P>

<P>The complete mitochondrial genome was obtained from the assembled genome data sequenced by next-generation sequencing technology from the Arctic green sea urchin <I>Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis</I>. The mitochondrial genome sequence was 15,710 bp in size, and the gene order and contents were identical with previously reported sea urchin mitochondrial genomes. Of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 1 gene (<I>Cytb</I>) had an incomplete stop codon. The base composition of the mitogenome of Arctic <I>S. droebachiensis</I> showed high A+T (58.36%) and anti-G bias (14.86%) on the third position of PCGs.</P>

Pulmonary embolism presenting as an isolated syncopal spell can be a difficult clinical correlation to make. However, physicians must be vigilant with patients who have syncope, because this symptom may be the “forgotten sign” of life-threatening pulmonary embolism. The need for prompt diagnosis is clear, because with appropriate treatment the majority of patients may survive. We report two cases of pulmonary embolism-induced syncope and review the pathopuysiology of pulmonary embolism.

Microcystis aeruginosa is a cyanobacterium that can form harmful algal blooms (HABs) producing toxic secondary metabolites. We provide here draft genome information of four strains of this freshwater cyanobacterium that was obtained by the Next Generation Sequencing approach to provide a better understanding of molecular mechanisms at the physiological and ecological levels. After gene assembly, genes of each strain were identified and annotated, and a genome database and G-browser of M. aeruginosa were subsequently constructed. Such genome information resources will enable us to obtain useful information for molecular ecological studies with a better understanding of modulating mechanisms of environmental factors associated with blooming.

BACKGROUND: Ethychlozate (ECZ) is a plant growth regulator of synthetic auxin for agricultural commodities (ACs). Accurate and sensitive method to determine ECZ in diverse ACs on global official purpose is required to legal residue regulation. As the current official method is confined to the limited type of crops with poor validation, this study was conducted to improve and extend the ECZ method using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in all the registered crops with method verification. METHODS AND RESULTS: ECZ and its acidic metabolite (ECZA) were both extracted from acidified samples with acetone and briefly purified by dichloromethane partition. ECZ was hydrolyzed to form ECZA and the combined ECZA was finally purified by ion-associated partition including hexane-washing. The instrumental quantitation was performed using HPLC/ FLD under ion-suppression of ECZA with no interference by sample co-extractives. The average recoveries of intra- and inter-day experiment ranged from 82.0 to 105.2% and 81.7 to 102.8%, respectively. The repeatability and reproducibility for intraand inter-day measurements expressed as a relative standard deviation was less than 8.7% and 7.4%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Established analytical method for ECZ residue in ACs was applicable to the nation-wide pesticide residues monitoring program with the acceptable level of sensitivity, repeatability and reproducibility.

2D fluorescence sensors produce a great deal of spectral data during fermentation processes, which can be analyzed using a variety of statistical techniques. Principal component analysis (PCA) and a self-organizing map (SOM) were used to analyze these 2D fluorescence spectra and to extract useful information from them. PCA resulted in scores and loadings that were visualized in the score-loading plots and used to monitor various fermentation processes with recombinant Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The SOM was found to be a useful and interpretative method of classifying the entire gamut of 2D fluorescence spectra and of selecting some significant combinations of excitation and emission wavelengths. The results, including the normalized weights and variances, indicated that the SOM network is capable of being used to interpret the fermentation processes monitored by a 2D fluorescence sensor.
