Antidiabetic and Renal Protective Properties of Berrycactus Fruit (Myrtillocactus geometrizans)

        Rosalia Reynoso-Camacho,Paola Martinez-Samayoa,Minerva Ramos-Gomez,Horacio Guzma´n,Luis M. Salgado 한국식품영양과학회 2015 Journal of medicinal food Vol.18 No.5

Native plants are exceedingly valuable because they are sources of natural products with applications for the treatment of various diseases. Berrycactus fruit (Myrtillocactus geometrizans) has been consumed in Mexico since ancient times due to its sweetness. The hypoglycemic and antioxidant effects of this fruit were evaluated in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats by replacing the drinking water with berrycactus juice (2 or 4 g/kg). After 4 weeks of treatment, the diabetic animals showed an improvement in their conditions, as reflected by diminished circulating glucose levels (up to 50%), diminished triglycerides (up to 67%), and diminished total cholesterol (up to 35%) compared with diabetic nontreated controls, and these effects were dose dependent. The dose of 4 g/kg produced the best results. The administration of the juice improved renal function and helped to restore normal levels of glutathione and glutathione S-transferase in the kidney. The expressions of two transcription factors that are relevant to normal functioning of the kidney changed due to the administration of the juice; compared to the diabetic nontreated controls, the level of nuclear factor kappa of B-cells diminished, and the total level of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma increased. The results of this study highlight the importance of the compounds that are present in berrycactus fruit as adjuvants in the treatment of diabetes and its renal complications.

      • China-United States Trade War : China’s action and the Impact to Taiwan

De Castro, Christia,Liao, Wan-Ling,Reynoso, Mitzi 동덕여자대학교 한중미래연구소 2018 한중미래연구 Vol.11 No.-

International trade helps to connect different parts of the world, establishing interdependent relations. China and the United States are the world’s largest economies and positive relations between these two countries is the key to global stability, and development (CCG, 2018). However, the recent trade war is causing tensions between Sino-US economic ties. This articletackles the background of the U.S.-China trade war, the United States Action and the response of China to the United States’s protectionist measure, and the impact of trade war to Taiwan and its actions towards the issue. This paper will conclude by summarizing the issue and show its implications.

The de novo transcriptome assembly of Agave angustifolia Haw, mining for carbohydrates and cellulose synthesis genes profiling, and molecular markers development

        Valadez-Moctezuma Ernestina,Samah Samir,Mascorro-Gallardo J. Oscar,Reynoso José J. López,Marbán-Mendoza Nahum,Aranda-Osorio Gilberto,Brito-Nájera Guadalupe 한국식물생명공학회 2023 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.17 No.6

Although Agave angustifolia Haw is one of the most cultural and industrial promising species in Mexico, no extensive genomic resources were available. Herein, we explore the transcriptome data set of this species. Total RNA from stem, roots, young and mature leaves was purified and sequenced by NovaSeq6000 system. From the de novo assembly of A. angustifolia, a total of 358,170 transcripts with average length of 1117 bp, N50 of 858 bp, and GC mean content of 43.5% were obtained. About 48.7% of the transcripts had open reading frame (ORF). Hence, 63.4% and 42.7% of the ORFs were annotated using Blastp and Blastx against UniProtKB database, respectively, uncovering the presence of at least 29,273 genes in the A. angustifolia transcriptome. The six pairwise comparisons between plant tissues resulted in the identification of 123,181 differentially expressed transcripts (23,978 were upregulated and 79,203 were downregulated). Several carbohydrate metabolism pathways were significantly enriched from the comparisons between leaves and stems. Thus, genes regulated for the fructan, starch and sucrose biosynthesis were discussed. Furthermore, genes involved in cellulose synthesis were explored being the members of the cellulose synthase genes subfamily were highly expressed in young leaf, while the members of the cellulose synthase-like subfamily were preferentially expressed in mature leaf. Moreover, A. angustifolia transcriptome served for the identification of 30,766 SSR and 21,686 VNTR potential markers. Overall, the transcriptomic data generated in this study provide an invaluable resource to understand the biology of A. angustifolia, offering new insight to understand their physiology and adaptation.

      • Three “DS” - Elements for Successful Weight Loss Outcomes: Role of Healthcare Professionals

        ( Dror Dicker ),( Assim A Alfadda ),( Pernille Auerbach ),( Ian D Caterson ),( Ada Cuevas ),( Jason Halford ),( Masato Iwabu ),( Jae-Heon Kang ),( Rita Nawar ),( Ricardo Arturo Reynoso Mendoza ),( Nic 대한간학회 2020 춘·추계 학술대회 (KASL) Vol.2020 No.1

Aims: In people with obesity (PwO), body weight loss of ≥5% is generally considered to be clinically meaningful. Some PwO do receive treatment and guidance from healthcare professionals (HCPs), but there remains a substantial unmet medical outcomes and weight maintenance need. To identify aspects that might contribute to a successful weight loss outcome (WLO; ≥5% body weight loss maintained for ≥1 year), we investigated the characteristics and experience of PwO with and without successful WLOs using data from the ACTION-IO study (NCT03584191). Methods: An online survey was completed by adults with obesity and HCPs in 11 countries: Australia, Chile, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, UAE and UK. A successful WLO was defined as ≥5% body weight loss in the past 3 years maintained for ≥1 year. Results: A total of 14,502 PwO completed the survey. General characteristics were similar between those who had a successful WLO (n=1,559; 11%) vs those who had not (n=12,943; 89%): 53% vs 52% were male; the mean age was 49 vs 48 years; the mean number of comorbidities was 2.0 vs 1.8. The mean number of serious weight loss attempts was 4 for both groups. However, more PwO who had a successful WLO weighed themselves every day (20%) compared with those who had not had a successful WLO (10%). In terms of interactions with HCPs, more PwO who had a successful WLO had discussed weight (58%) with an HCP within the past 5 years than those who did not have a successful WLO (53%). In addition, more PwO who had a successful WLO compared with those who did not had been diagnosed with obesity (42% vs 35%) and had subsequent direction through the scheduling of a follow-up appointment (25% vs 21%). Conclusions: A 3D approach from HCPs (diagnosis, discussion and direction) appears to be a key element in facilitating a successful WLO. Neither gender, nor age, nor number of weight loss attempts was associated with a successful WLO.
