An Efficient Synthesis of Mono-Substituted Benzyl Ferrocene Derivatives

The direct alkylation of ferrocene (FC) can be achieved via a Friedel–Craft reaction using an alkyl halide and AlCl3; however, this invariably leads to mixtures of mono- and poly-alkylated complexes. Here, we describe the synthesis of mono-substituted benzyl FC derivatives by a Friedel–Craft reaction utilizing environmentally benign substrates such as benzyl and allyl alcohol and a catalytic amount of Lewis acid in the absence of organic solvents. The use of molten FC, which plays the role of a solvent, proved a robust way to produce excellent yields of the mono-substituted FC derivatives. Furthermore, this novel synthetic method is very simple and offers great potential for the industrial-scale synthesis of FC derivatives.

The present study involves medium formulation using an agro waste, cane molasses, as the carbon substratethat was used instead of sucrose, to produce exopolysaccharide from Bacillus subtilis. Plackett Burman designwas applied to evaluate twenty selected components, from which cane molasses, yeast extract, CaCl2, NaCl were foundto be significant for fermentation. To study the concentration of each component, response surface methodology experimentaldesign was performed using central composite design. The response plots resulted in optimized conditions--Cane molasses- 2.36%, Yeast extract- 0.56%, NaCl - 0.71%, CaCl2 - 0.05%--which yielded 4.92 g/L at 48 h, at a temperatureof 37 oC, initial pH 7 under still conditions. Antioxidant activity of EPS on DPPH resulted in a reducing capacityof 61.19%, at a concentration of 0.8mg/ml, greater than standard, Vitamin C. The biopolymer could thus be an ecofriendlyproduct which can be subjected to various industrial and pharmaceutical applications.

The flood of research output and increasing demands for peer reviewers have necessitated the intervention of artificial intelligence (AI) in scholarly publishing. Although human input is seen as essential for writing publications, the contribution of AI slowly and steadily moves ahead. AI may redefine the role of science communication experts in the future and transform the scholarly publishing industry into a technology-driven one. It can prospectively improve the quality of publishable content and identify errors in published content. In this article, we review various AI and other associated tools currently in use or development for a range of publishing obligations and functions that have brought about or can soon leverage much-demanded advances in scholarly communications. Several AI-assisted tools, with diverse scope and scale, have emerged in the scholarly market. AI algorithms develop summaries of scientific publications and convert them into plain-language texts, press statements, and news stories. Retrieval of accurate and sufficient information is prominent in evidence-based science publications. Semantic tools may empower transparent and proficient data extraction tactics. From detecting simple plagiarism errors to predicting the projected citation impact of an unpublished article, AI’s role in scholarly publishing is expected to be multidimensional. AI, natural language processing, and machine learning in scholarly publishing have arrived for writers, editors, authors, and publishers. They should leverage these technologies to enable the fast and accurate dissemination of scientific information to contribute to the betterment of humankind.

A rhodamine B-based fluorescent probe for nitrite ion (NO2 −) has been designed, synthesized, characterized and its properties for recognition of NO2 − were studied. Nearly non fluorescent probe upon reaction with nitrite ion significantly triggered the fluorescence. Fluorescence response is based on ring opening of the spirolactam of rhodamine B phenyl hydrazide showing maximum absorbance at 552 nm and maximum emission at 584 nm. Probe 3 exhibited high sensitivity and extreme selectivity for nitrite ion over other common ions and oxidants (Cl−, ClO−, ClO2 −, ClO3 −, ClO4 −, SO4 2−, SiO3 2−, NO3 2−, CO3 2−) examined in methanol water (1:1, v/v) at pH 7.0. The probe might be a new efficient tool for detection of nitrite ion in natural water and biological system.

Measurement of quality of life among prostate cancer patients helps the health care providers to understand the impact of the disease in the patients' own perspective. The main aim of this study is to measure the quality of life among prostate cancer patients at University Malaya Medical Center (UMMC) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) and to ascertain the association factors for physical coefficient summary (PCS) and mental coefficient summary (MCS). A hospital based, cross sectional study using the Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire was conducted over a period of 6 months. A total of 193 respondents were recruited. Their total quality of life score was $70.1{\pm}14.7$ and the PCS score was lower compared to MCS. The factors associated for PCS were: age, living partner, renal problem, urinary problem of intermittency, dysuria and hematuria. Factors associated for MCS were: age, living partner, renal problem, presenting prostatic specific antigen and urinary problem of intermittency and dysuria. Our prostate cancer patients had moderate quality of life in the physical health components but their mental health was less affected.
