Recent Developments in Post-Calculus Mathematics Education Research

In this report I present highlights from a comprehensive review of post-calculus mathematics education research. In the past 10 years the field has witnessed considerable growth, with more and more research moving away from identifying student difficulties to studies of learning and teaching processes and productive ways that instruction moves forward student thinking. I also highlight the emerging body of work that is examining lecture-oriented instruction and inquiry-oriented instruction. I conclude with a look ahead at the intersection of undergraduate mathematics education research and other discipline based educational research (e.g., Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Engineering), with an eye toward what we can learn from other disciplines and ways in which we need to better coordinate with them.
The Temporality of the Late Arrival: Fanon, Trenka, and the Question of Returning

In this article, we want to explore the deeper significance involved in the gesture of returning for Korean adoptees coming back to their country of birth. Around 200.000 Korean babies have been sent to western families since the end of the Korean War. This makes it the largest and oldest post-war transnational adoption program worldwide. By now, the majority of this group has reached adulthood, and many Korean adoptees have returned to search for their biological relatives; some have even settled down in Korean society permanently. In our article, we want to focus on Jane Trenka’s two books The Language of Blood (2003) and Fugitive Visions (2009), and the theoretical framework by Frantz Fanon, especially the one he develops in the work The Wretched of the Earth from 1961. In her most recent book, Jane Jeong Trenka captures the experience of a Korean adoptee returning to and trying to settle down in her native country. The description of this experience has many similarities to, albeit also differences with, Fanon’s theory of the native intellectual returning to his or her colonized country. Trenka’s book offers a perspective which in many ways is uniquely different than the one we typically find in the majority of Korean adoptee autobiographies, in which the protagonist typically lives in the West and travels to Korea on a shorter or longer visit; in Trenka’s new book, there is no intention of leaving Korea again. But what does such a radical re-location involve more specifically, and how does this experience influence the stylistic dimension of Trenka’s writing? Frantz Fanon here offers an insightful reflection on the gesture of returning as a process of emancipation. And yet, as we argue, Trenka’s new book also reformulates the Fanonian vision in unexpected ways. Read alongside, Trenka’s work and Fanon’s theoretical framework reveal some intriguing challenges and perspectives for the adopted subject embarking on the hard and difficult journey back to her native country.

<P>Two-dimensional critical percolation is the member <img SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/1751-8121/41/29/295208/jpa280277ieqn3.gif' ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='{\cal LM}(2,3) '/> of the infinite series of Yang–Baxter integrable logarithmic minimal models <img SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/1751-8121/41/29/295208/jpa280277ieqn4.gif' ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='{\cal LM}(p,p^{\prime}) '/>. We consider the continuum scaling limit of this lattice model as a ‘rational’ logarithmic conformal field theory with extended <img SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/1751-8121/41/29/295208/jpa280277ieqn5.gif' ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='{\cal W}={\cal W}_{2,3} '/> symmetry and use a lattice approach on a strip to study the fundamental fusion rules in this extended picture. We find that the representation content of the ensuing closed fusion algebra contains 26 <img SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/1751-8121/41/29/295208/jpa280277ieqn6.gif' ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='{\cal W} '/>-indecomposable representations with eight rank-1 representations, 14 rank-2 representations and four rank-3 representations. We identify these representations with suitable limits of Yang–Baxter integrable boundary conditions on the lattice and obtain their associated <img SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/1751-8121/41/29/295208/jpa280277ieqn7.gif' ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='{\cal W} '/>-extended characters. The latter decompose as finite non-negative sums of <img SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/1751-8121/41/29/295208/jpa280277ieqn8.gif' ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='{\cal W} '/>-irreducible characters of which 13 are required. Implementation of fusion on the lattice allows us to read off the fusion rules governing the fusion algebra of the 26 representations and to construct an explicit Cayley table. The closure of these representations among themselves under fusion is remarkable confirmation of the proposed extended symmetry.</P>
A finite element yield line model for the analysis of reinforced concrete plates

This paper concerns the development and implementation of an orthotropic, stress resultant elasto-plastic finite element model for the collapse load analysis of reinforced concrete plates. The model implements yield line plasticity theory for reinforced concrete. The behaviour of the yield functions are studied, and modifications introduced to ensure a robust finite element model of cases involving bending and twisting stress resultants ($M_x$, $M_y$, $M_{xy}$). Onset of plasticity is always governed by the general yield-line-model (YLM), but in some cases a switch to the stress resultant form of the von Mises function is used to ensure the proper evolution of plastic strains. Case studies are presented, involving isotropic and orthotropic plates, to assess the behaviour of the yield line approach. The YLM function is shown to perform extremely well, in predicting both the collapse loads and failure mechanisms.
Adaptive Superheat Control of a Refrigeration Plant using Backstepping

This paper proposes a novel method for superheat and capacity control of refrigeration systems. The new idea is to control the superheat by the compressor speed and capacity by the refrigerant flow. This gives a highly nonlinear transfer operator from compressor speed input to the superheat output. A new low order nonlinear model of the evaporator is developed and used in a backstepping design of an adaptive nonlinear controller. The stability of the proposed method is validated theoretically by Lyapunov analysis and experimental results shows the performance of the system for a wide range of operating points.

Proteins of animal origin can represent a portion of the overall nitrogen (N) pool in the soil environment and there is a possibility that plants may utilize animal proteins as a N source. Using wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) we investigated if the model protein, ovalbumin was taken up into the roots and transported within the plant. In roots, ovalbumin was associated with the epidermis when no root damage was evident, but with minor root damage, it was present in intercellular spaces throughout the cortex and at the endodermis. Ovalbumin was only found in the stem when minor damage to the root system was evident. Suspension cultures of wheat protoplasts revealed that ovalbumin was not assimilated into individual plant cells. Our results suggest that ovalbumin uptake and subsequent movement in wheat is possible only after root damage has occurred. Apoplastic movement may enable animal protein to enter plant tissues above the soil level where they could be consumed by grazers.
