Understanding the Concept of Iron Deficiency Anemia in Athletes: A Narrative Review

        Anvi RANA(Anvi RANA ) 한국스포츠과학회 2022 스포츠과학연구(JSAS) Vol.6 No.4

New insights into the aetiology of anaemia in athletes have been discovered in recent years. From hemodilution and redistribution, which are thought to commit to so-called “sports anaemia,” to iron deficiency triggered by higher requirements, dietary requirements, decreased uptake, enhanced losses, hemolysis, and sequester, to genetic factors of different types of anaemia (some related to sport), anaemia in athletes necessitates a careful and multisystem methodology. Dietary factors that hinder iron absorption and enhance iron bioavailability (e.g., phytate, polyphenols) should be considered. Celiac disease, which is more common in female athletes, may be the consequence of an iron deficiency anaemia that is unidentified. Sweating, hematuria, gastrointestinal bleeding, inflammation, and intravascular and extravascular hemolysis are all ways iron is lost during strength training. In training, evaluating the iron status, particularly in athletes at risk of iron deficiency, may work on improving iron balance and possibly effectiveness. Iron status is influenced by a healthy gut microbiome. To eliminate hemolysis, athletes at risk of iron deficiency should engage in non-weight-bearing, low-intensity sporting activities.

Identifying the influence of obsolescence risk and health beliefs in fitness wearable healthcare technology

        Rana Avinash,Soodan Vishal,Kumar Ashwani,Jayawardena Nirma Sadamali,Park Thaichon,Gupta Kamal,Rana Nripendra P. 한국마케팅과학회 2024 마케팅과학연구 Vol.34 No.3

This study aimed to examine factors influencing the adoption of fitness wearable technologies (FWTs) by extending the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2). A survey was conducted with 574 fitness wearable users in India to test a conceptual Fitness Wearable Adoption Model (FWAM) incorporating additional constructs of obsolescence risk, health belief, and perceived accuracy alongside UTAUT2 variables. Structural equation modeling revealed performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, hedonic motivation, price value, health belief, and obsolescence risk positively affected adoption intentions, while perceived security had no effect. Perceived accuracy mediated the impact of performance expectancy, while price value mediated the relationship between obsolescence risk and intentions. The research makes key contributions by adapting UTAUT2 to a new context, integrating additional adoption factors, identifying mediating mechanisms, and revealing moderating effects of age. Findings provide valuable insights into consumer acceptance of fitness wearables that can inform strategies for manufacturers, marketers, and health practitioners to promote adoption. A major focus of the investigation is to develop strategies for increasing the adoption of wrist-worn fitness technology that provides an opportunity for fitness wearable technology manufacturers to strengthen relationships with older age groups through effective communication techniques.

Bioactive Chemicals from Carrot (Daucus carota) Juice Extracts for the Treatment of Leukemia

        Rana Zaini,Malcolm R. Clench,Christine L. Le Maitre 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.11

Overwhelming evidence indicates that consumption of fruits and vegetables with antioxidant properties correlates with reduced risk for cancers, including leukemia. Carrots contain beneficial agents, such as β-carotene and polyacetylenes, which could be effective in the treatment of leukemia. This study investigated the effect of carrot juice extracts on myeloid and lymphoid leukemia cell lines together with normal hematopoietic stem cells. Leukemia cell lines and nontumor control cells were treated with carrot juice extracts for up to 72 hours in vitro. Induction of apoptosis was investigated by using annexin V/propidium iodide staining followed by flow cytometric analysis, and results were confirmed by using 4′-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole morphology. Effects on cellular proliferation were investigated via cell cycle analysis and cell counts. Treatment of leukemia cell lines with carrot juice extract induced apoptosis and inhibited progression through the cell cycle. Lymphoid cell lines were affected to a greater extent than were myeloid cell lines, and normal hematopoietic stem cells were less sensitive than most cell lines. This study has shown that extracts from carrots can induce apoptosis and cause cell cycle arrest in leukemia cell lines. The findings suggest that carrots may be an excellent source of bioactive chemicals for the treatment of leukemia.

Antibiotics in Livestock and Their Effects on the Human Health: Mini Review

        Rana Md. Shohel,허선진 공주대학교 자원과학연구소 2022 자원과학연구 Vol.4 No.1

An increase in livestock then led to unsanitary conditions and disease in the animals, prompting producers to administer constant low doses of antibiotics to their animals as a prophylactic to prevent disease. However, the use of antibiotics in food production also led to the spread and development of antimicrobial resistance. Likewise, extensive antibiotic resistance has been reported for bacteria, including human pathogens, from farmed fish and market shrimp. Some of the antibiotic resistance genes identified in food bacteria have also been identified in humans, providing indirect evidence for transfer by food handling and/or consumption. However, therapeutic uses of antibiotics may cause an adverse effect on normal human microflora. Antibiotics can decrease the number of bacteria and sometimes kill the beneficial bacterial species. Basically, broad-spectrum antibiotics may have a potential adverse effect on wide range of gut flora resulting gastrointestinal disturbance. In developed countries, an assortment of systems and programs to monitor antibiotic use, as well as antibiotics resistance in food animals, food products, and humans have been implemented. Such initiatives have led to the substantial decrease of antibiotic consumption and rates of resistance in these settings. This review provides updated information on the antibiotics resistance in livestock and human health.

Fabrication and device characterization of potassium fluoride solution treated CZTSSe solar cell

        Rana, T.R.,Kim, J.,Sim, J.H.,Yang, K.J.,Kim, D.H.,Kang, J.K. Elsevier 2017 Current Applied Physics Vol.17 No.10

Post deposition treatment (PDT) for Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)(4) (CZTSSe) was carried out by simply dipping the absorber into the KF solution at 80 degrees C. The dipping time of absorber in KF solution was found to be crucial to device parameters of CZTSSe solar cell. The K-doping improved the solar cell efficiency from 4.4% to 7.6% by 1 min dipping whereas the longer than 5 min dipping solar cells showed distorted kink J-V curves. The activation energy of CZTSSe solar cell was increased upto 1 min KF treatment from 0.83 eV to 0.92 eV which indicates interface recombination is reduced significantly. However, the activation energies of 5 min and 10 min dipping solar cells were found to be 0.81 eV and 0.63 eV where dominant recombination was interface recombination. Furthermore, trap energies of 49 meV and 298 meV of pristine CZTSSe solar cell were modified to 33 meV and 117 meV for 1 min treated CZTSSe solar cell. Trap energies of 5 min were calculated to be 112 meV and 147 meV. The proper KF doping passivated the shallow as well as deep defects of CZTSSe solar cell which is reflected in photovoltaic performances directly. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Synthesis, Characterization and Enhanced Selectivity in RP-HPLC of Polar Carbonyl Group Embedded Poly (Vinyl Octadecanoate) Grafted Stationary Phase by Simple Heterogeneous "Graft from" Technique

Rana, Ashequl A.,Karim, Mohammad Mainul,Takafuji, Makoto Korean Chemical Society 2011 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.32 No.1

A new high performance liquid chromatograpgy (HPLC) stationary phase that possesses an internal carbonyl functional group is synthesized by heterogeneous "graft from" method. This new stationary phase, poly (vinyl octadecanoate) grafted silica (Sil-2) is then characterized by different physico-chemical methods such as diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform, suspension state $^1H$ NMR, solid state $^{13}C$ CP/MAS NMR, $^{29}Si$ CP/MAS NMR, elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. Chromatographic properties of Sil-2 were evaluated under reversed phase condition by separating polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and comparing the chromatographic results with those on polymeric as well as monomeric octadecylated silica stationary phases.

Structural, optical, electrical and morphological properties of different concentration sol-gel ZnO seeds and consanguineous ZnO nanostructured growth dependence on seeds

Rana, Abu ul Hassan Sarwar,Chang, Seung-Bo,Chae, Hyun Uk,Kim, Hyun-Seok Elsevier 2017 JOURNAL OF ALLOYS AND COMPOUNDS Vol.729 No.-

Abstract

Previous studies on solution concentration, density, coating time, and annealing temperature of sol-gel ZnO seeds have underrated the growth of ZnO nanostructures. However, these details are quite vital and central to growth of vertically aligned ZnO nanorods (ZNRs). The current study investigates ZNR structure and growth dependence upon solution concentration, thickness, density, diameter, annealing time, annealing temperature, and crystalline quality of sol-gel spin coated ZnO seeds. For growth optimization, we used 0.02, 0.04, and 0.09 M zinc acetate seeds in n-propanol coated two and five times on a p-Si substrate. We found that seed thickness and density depend upon successive coats and the seed solution concentration. The morphology, alignment, density, aspect ratio, crystalline quality, and optical properties of ZNRs are directly related to the seed parameters. The defect centers in seeds and ZNRs are independent of each other. We also studied the electrical characteristics of spin coated seeds, which is a hallmark in the research and development of seed oriented growth of ZnO nanostructures.

Highlights

Structural, optical, electrical, and morphological properties of different concentration sol-gel ZnO seeds are presented.

The ZnO nanorod (ZNR) growth depends upon the concentration, thickness, and crystalline quality of seeds.

The ZNR structural and optical properties confide in the structural and optical properties of seeds.

The seed layer defect density and carrier concentration are directly proportional to seed solution concentration.

Annealing temperature and time are of paramount importance in seed layer stability.

      • Lack of Association of the NPAS2 Gene Ala394Thr Polymorphism (rs2305160:G>A) with Risk of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

Rana, Sobia,Shahid, Adeela,Ullah, Hafeez,Mahmood, Saqib Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.17

Background: NPAS2 is a product of the circadian clock gene. It acts as a putative tumor suppressor by playing an important role in DNA damage responses, cell cycle control and apoptosis. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) appears to be an apoptosis related disorder and alteration in the NPAS2 gene might therefore be directly involved in the etiology of CLL. Here, the Ala394Thr polymorphism (rs2305160:G>A) in the NPAS2 gene was genotyped and melatonin concentrations were measured in a total of seventy-four individuals, including thirty-seven CLL cases and an equal number of age- and sex-matched healthy controls in order to examine the effect of NPAS2 polymorphism and melatonin concentrations on CLL risk in a Pakistani population. Materials and Methods: Genotyping of rs2305160:G>A polymorphism at NPAS2 locus was carried out by amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction (ARMS-PCR). Melatonin concentrations were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Statistical analysis was performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences software. Results: Our results demonstrated no association of the variant Thr genotypes (Ala/Thr and Thr/Thr) with risk of CLL. Similarly, no association of rs2305160 with CLL was observed in either females or males after stratification of study population on a gender basis. Moreover, when the subjects with CLL were further stratified into shift-workers and non-shift-workers, no association of rs2305160 with CLL was seen in either case. However, significantly low serum melatonin levels were observed in CLL patients as compared to healthy subjects (p<0.05). Also, lower melatonin levels were seen in shift-workers as compared to non-shift-workers (p<0.05). There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the melatonin levels across NPAS2 genotypes in all subjects, subjects with CLL who were either shift workers or non-shift-workers. General Linear Model (GLM) univariate analysis revealed no significant association (p>0.05) of the rs2305160 polymorphism of the NPAS2 gene with melatonin levels in any of the groups. Conclusions: While low melatonin levels and shift-work can be considered as one of the risk factors for CLL, the NPAS2 rs2305160 polymorphism does not appear to have any association with risk of CLL in our Pakistani population.
