Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping for Porcine Backfat Thickness
Wu, X.L.,Lee, C.,Jiang, J.,Peng, Y.L.,Yan, H.F.,Yang, S.L.,Xiao, B.N.,Liu, X.C.,Shi, Q.S. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2002 Animal Bioscience Vol.15 No.7
A partial genome scan using porcine microsatellites was carried out to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) for backfat thickness (BFT) in a pig reference population. This population carried QTL on chromosomes 1, 13 and 18. The QTL on chromosome 1 was located between marker loci S0113 and SW1301. The QTL corresponded to very low density lipoprotein receptor gene (VLDLR) in location and in biological effects, suggesting that VLDLR might be a candidate gene. The QTL found on chromosome 13 was found between marker loci SWR1941 and SW864, but significance for the marker-trait association was inconsistent by using data with different generations. The QTL on chromosome 18 was discovered between markers S0062 and S0117, and it was in proximity of the regions where IGFBP3 and GHRHR were located. The porcine obese gene might be also a candidate gene for the QTL on chromosome 18. In order to understand genetic architecture of BFT better, fine mapping and positional comparative candidate gene analyses are necessary.

The physical origin of complex dynamic domain configuration in nonequilibrium magnetic systems with mesoscopic length scales has been studied. An increasing complexity in the spatial feature of the evolution is found to accompany the increasing reversal speed, when a ferromagnetic element is driven by progressively faster switching fields applied antiparallel to the initial magnetization direction. As reversal rates approach the characteristic precession frequencies of spin fluctuations, the thermal energy can boost the magnetization into local configurations which are completely different from those experienced during quasistatic reversal. The sensitive dependence of the spatial pattern on switching speed can be understood in terms of a dynamic exchange interaction of thermally excited spins; the coherent modulation of the spins is strongly dependent on the rise time of switching pulses.
PARAMETRIC STUDY OF A FREE PISTON LINEAR ALTERNATOR
Q.-F. LI,J. XIAO,Z. HUANG 한국자동차공학회 2010 International journal of automotive technology Vol.11 No.1
This work presents the modeling and simulation of a novel free piston linear alternator. The modeling consists of two parts, a thermodynamic model and dynamic model, and these are combined and solved by matlab/simulink. The effects of various intake pressures, moving masses, ignition positions, and resistance loads are studied. The simulation results show that the free piston motion is different from that of the traditional internal combustion engine (ICE). The free piston accelerates and decelerates more quickly at the end of the stroke and additionally, the top dead center is free and changes accordingly with the studied parameters. Thus, a high compression ratio can be easily achieved.

Background/Aims There are increasing evidences for gastrointestinal motility disorder (GIMD) and gastric stress ulcer induced by noise stress. The present study was to investigate the reversed effect of melatonin on GIMD and gastric stress ulcer induced by noise stress and potential mechanism. Methods Noise stress was induced on rats, and melatonin (15 mg/kg) was administered to rats by intraperitoneal injection. Differences were assessed in gastric residual rate (GRR), small intestine propulsion rate (SPR), Guth injury score, cortisol, gastrointestinal hormones (calcitonin-gene-related peptide and motilin) and oxidative stress markers (superoxide dismutase and malondialde hyde) in blood plasma as well as gastric mucosa homogenate with or without melatonin. The pathological examination of gastric mucosa was also performed. Results The GRR and SPR were improved by noise stress compared with control (P < 0.05). The pathological examination and Guth injury score revealed gastric stress ulcer. Moreover, the levels of cortisol, motilin and malondialdehyde in blood plasma and malondialdehyde in gastric mucosa homogenate were increased by noise stress (P < 0.05). CGRP and superoxide dismutase activity in both of blood plasma and gastric mucosa homogenate were significantly decreased (P< 0.05). Furthermore, melatonin reversed changes in GRR, SPR, pathological examination, Guth injury score, cortisol, motilin, CGRP, superoxide dismutase activity and malondialdehyde (P < 0.05). Conclusions Melatonin is effective in reversing the GIMD and gastric stress ulcer induced by noise stress. The underlying mechanism may be involved in oxidative stress and gastrointestinal hormones.
