      • The Impact of Supertall Density on City Systems

Price, Bill,Bickerdyke, Andrew,Borchers, Meike,Gabbitas, Tim,Hailey, Lee Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat Korea 2017 International journal of high-rise buildings Vol.6 No.4

This paper discusses several topics associated with the densification caused by supertall buildings and their impact on city systems. The paper covers five key areas where a supertall tower creates a concentration of needs and effects. First, the paper comments on population shifts towards the city and how they affect carbon footprint, utilities infrastructure and transport. The effect of single- and mixed-use towers is discussed in the context of population density. The second section brings the issues of transit, accessibility and master planning into focus. The use and criticality of public transport, cycling and walking is described. Servicing and deliveries using freight consolidation and shared systems is also discussed along with their contribution to the culture of sustainable travel. In the third section the paper reflects on supertall buildings' below-ground utilities and drainage provision, particularly the challenges faced in established city infrastructures. The utilities issues associated with supertall concentration (in land-use terms) compared to equivalent low-rise distribution is also commented on in the context of surface water runoff. In the fourth section, the topic of supertall sustainability is discussed and how city systems need to respond to create desirable and affordable space for occupiers. The changing need for vertical communities, 'stacked neighbourhoods' and the notion of a micro-city is described. Finally, the paper considers the energy consumption and resilience of supertall buildings in the context of basic geometry, façade design, climate and mixed-use benefits as they impact city systems.

Xenon in molten salt reactors: The effects of solubility, circulating particulate, ionization, and the sensitivity of the circulating void fraction

Price, Terry J.,Chvala, Ondrej,Taylor, Zack Korean Nuclear Society 2020 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.52 No.6

Xenon behaves differently in molten salt reactors (MSRs) compared to solid fuel reactors. This behavior needs exploring due to the large reactivity effect of the 135Xe isotope, given the current interest in MSR power plant development for commercial deployment. This paper focuses on select topics in xenon transport, reviews relevant past works, and proposes specific research questions to advance the state of the art in each of the focus areas. Specifically, the paper discusses the issue of xenon solubility in MSRs, the behavior of particulates circulating in MSR fuel salt and its influence on the xenon transport, the possibility of ionization of xenon atoms which changes its effective size and thus affects its mass transport, and finally the issue of circulating void fraction and how it is measured. This work presents specific recommendations for MSR designers to research the limits of Henry's law validity, circulating particulate scrubbers, validity of mass transport coefficients in high radiation fields, and the effects of pump speed on circulating void fraction.

Intercultural Communication and Interpretation: Transforming Interpreters Into Effective Cultural Mediators

        Price, Kevin 한국통번역교육학회 2009 통번역교육연구 Vol.7 No.2

      • The <i>Ink4a/Arf</i> Locus Is a Barrier to Direct Neuronal Transdifferentiation

        Price, James D.,Park, Ki-Youb,Chen, Jiadong,Salinas, Ryan D.,Cho, Mathew J.,Kriegstein, Arnold R.,Lim, Daniel A. Society for Neuroscience 2014 The Journal of neuroscience Vol.34 No.37

<P>Non-neurogenic cell types, such as cortical astroglia and fibroblasts, can be directly converted into neurons by the overexpression of defined transcription factors. Normally, the cellular phenotype of such differentiated cells is remarkably stable and resists direct cell transdifferentiation. Here we show that the <I>Ink4a/Arf</I> (also known as <I>Cdkn2a</I>) locus is a developmental barrier to direct neuronal transdifferentiation induced by transcription factor overexpression. With serial passage <I>in vitro</I>, wild-type postnatal cortical astroglia become progressively resistant to <I>Dlx2</I>-induced neuronal transdifferentiation. In contrast, the neurogenic competence of <I>Ink4a/Arf</I>-deficient astroglia is both greatly increased and does not diminish through serial cell culture passage. Electrophysiological analysis further demonstrates the neuronal identity of cells induced from <I>Ink4a/Arf-</I>null astroglia, and short hairpin RNA-mediated acute knockdown of p16Ink4a and p19Arf p16Ink4a and p19Arf indicates that these gene products function postnatally as a barrier to cellular transdifferentiation. Finally, we found that mouse fibroblasts deficient for <I>Ink4a/Arf</I> also exhibit greatly enhanced transcription factor-induced neuronal induction. These data indicate that <I>Ink4a/Arf</I> is a potent barrier to direct neuronal transdifferentiation and further suggest that this locus functions normally in the progressive developmental restriction of postnatal astrocytes.</P>

      • SHADOWING APEC : NONGOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS BUILD REGIONAL ALLIANCES

Price, John The Institute for Far Eastern Studies, Kyungnam Un 1998 人文學硏究 Vol.23 No.-

Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in the Asia-Pacific have become increasingly active and vocal in their criticism of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). Its freetrade agenda, its close ties with business in the region, and the high profile it has achieved since the beginning of leaders' meetings in 1993 caught the attention of NGOs. Since then, NGOs have organized counter-conferences parallel to the leaders meetings, conferences that are becoming larger and broader in scope every year. The 1997 People's Summit on APEC, held in Vancouver, Canada, was effective in many ways, but it also revealed that NGOs in the Asia-Pacific face significant challenges. Sectoral and political divisions, and the difficulties of maintaining ongoing linkages will require renewed efforts on the part of NGOs if they are to continue to develop an alternative agenda for sustainable human development in the Asia-Pacific.

Generative design for additive manufacturing using a biological development analogy

        Price Mark,Zhang Wei,Friel Imelda,Robinson Trevor,McConnell Roisin,Nolan Declan,Kilpatrick Peter,Barbhuiya Sakil,Kyle Stephen 한국CDE학회 2022 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.9 No.2

The transformation in manufacturing capability being driven by new processes, such as additive manufacturing, offers huge potential for product innovation and opportunity to create bespoke designs tailored to individual specifications or needs. However, current design systems and tools are not yet capable of fully capitalizing on these new technologies and new approaches are needed. Many current methodologies are top-down and sequential, offering limited flexibility and an overly constrained design space. Post-processing is needed to ensure that a design can be manufactured. This work presents a novel bottom-up methodology to generate designs that can be tightly integrated with the additive manufacturing environment and that can respond flexibly to changes in that environment. Focusing on overhang as an exemplar manufacturing constraint, the method engenders changes in the design either by locally adjusting the geometry to stay within limits or by adding an appropriate support structure. The method is bio-inspired, based on strategies observed in natural systems, particularly in biological growth and development. The design geometry is grown in a computer-aided design-based, bio-inspired generative design system called ‘Biohaviour’. This process is similar to plant growth, and the design’s final configuration, shape, and size are informed by both the manufacturing capability and internal design stresses. The approach is demonstrated for overhang limit and build orientation and is extensible to any general situation.

Integrating Evidence for Managing Asthma in Patients Who Smoke

        David Price,Leif Bjermer,Todor A. Popov,Alison Chisholm 대한천식알레르기학회 2014 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.6 No.2

Cigarette smoking among asthma patients is associated with worsening symptoms and accelerated decline in lung function. Smoking asthma is alsocharacterized by increased levels of neutrophils and macrophages, and greater small airway remodeling, resulting in increased airflow obstruction andimpaired response to corticosteroid therapy. As a result, smokers are typically excluded from asthma randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The strict inclusion/exclusion criteria used by asthma RCTs limits the extent to which their findings can be extrapolated to the routine care asthma population and toreflect the likely effectiveness of therapies in subgroups of particular clinical interest, such as smoking asthmatics. The inclusion of smokers in observationalasthma studies and pragmatic trials in asthma provides a way of assessing the relative effectiveness of different treatment options for the managementof this interesting clinical subgroup. Exploratory studies of possible treatment options for smoking asthma suggest potential utility in: prescribinghigher-dose ICS; targeting the small airways of the lungs with extra-fine particle ICS formulations; targeting leukotreines, and possibly also combinationsof these options. However, further studies are required. With the paucity of RCT data available, complementary streams of evidence (those fromRCTs, pragmatic trials and observational studies) need to be combined to help guide judicious prescribing decisions in smokers with asthma.
