Urinary Levels of phthalate metabolites in Korean population: KorSEP data, 2009

[Background] Phthalates are ubiquitous industrial chemicals used as plasticizers, solvents, lubricants, and stabilizers in the manufacture of consumer products such as children`s toys, medical equipment and medications, cosmetics, and food packaging. Assessing human exposure to phthalates is of interest because of their potential adverse health effects, particularly among the young. [Objective] The national survey for environmental exposure monitoring in 2009 were funded by Korea Food of Drug Administration (KFDA) with a view to assessing human exposure to selected chemicals including phthalates and identifying major sources of them. [Methods] The subjects of our study aged between 18 and 70 were selected through stratified sampling nationwide and interviewed by trained interviewers using structured questionnaire to collect information on general characteristics, use of plastics, dietary habits related with potential exposure to phthalates. Total 1,874 urine samples were collected and stored at -20℃ until measurement for 10 selected metabolites of phthalates using HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography). Out of 10 metabolites, six ones were selected for further statistical analyses based on proportion of samples over LOQ (limit of quantification), i.e, MnBP, MiBP, MbZP, MeHP, MeOHP, and MeHHP. For each urinary levels (ug per gram creatinine), geometric mean and 50th, 75th, 90th, 95th were represented. Given the distribution of response variable deviates from normal distribution, log transformation was performed, and then tested for its statistical significance. Differences by selected variables were analyzed for statistical significance by ANCOVA (analysis of covariance) adjusted for age, sex, income, and body mass index. [Results] Common phthalate metabolites included MnBP (GM=41.7, GSE=1.9), MeHHP (38.1, 1.9), MeOHP (17.5, 1.9), MiBP (17.0, 2.2), and MBzP (15.8, 2.8), whereas the proportion of data above LOQ was less than 20 for MCHP, MnOP, MiNP, and MiDP. The levels for the six metabolites tended to be higher compared to those from the national survey in US (NHANES), and lower compared to those from the national survey in Germany (GerES4). Significant correlations between the six urinary metabolites were observed. Urinary level of phthalates were observed to be higher among subjects with older age, females, subjects with higher body mass index (BMI), and lower income.

<P>Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is widely used in various medical fields related to cardiovascular diseases. Rapid technological innovations in magnetic resonance imaging in recent times have resulted in the development of new techniques for CMR imaging. T1 and T2 image mapping sequences enable the direct quantification of T1, T2, and extracellular volume fraction (ECV) values of the myocardium, leading to the progressive integration of these sequences into routine CMR settings. Currently, T1, T2, and ECV values are being recognized as not only robust biomarkers for diagnosis of cardiomyopathies, but also predictive factors for treatment monitoring and prognosis. In this study, we have reviewed various T1 and T2 mapping sequence techniques and their clinical applications.</P>
Chemical structure and biological activity of the Caenorhabditis elegans dauer-inducing pheromone

Pheromones are cell type-specific signals used for communication between individuals of the same species. When faced with overcrowding or starvation, Caenorhabditis elegans secrete the pheromone daumone, which facilitates communication between individuals for adaptation to adverse environmental stimuli. Daumone signals C. elegans to enter the dauer stage, an enduring and non-ageing stage of the nematode life cycle with distinctive adaptive features and extended life. Because daumone is a key regulator of chemosensory processes in development and ageing, the chemical identification of daumone is important for elucidating features of the daumone-mediated signalling pathway. Here we report the isolation of natural daumone from C. elegans by large-scale purification, as well as the total chemical synthesis of daumone. We present the stereospecific chemical structure of purified daumone, a fatty acid derivative. We demonstrate that both natural and chemically synthesized daumones equally induce dauer larva formation in C. elegans (N2 strain) and certain dauer mutants, and also result in competition between food and daumone. These results should help to elucidate the daumone-mediated signalling pathway, which might in turn influence ageing and obesity research and the development of antinematodal drugs.

Activating signal cointegrator-2(ASC-2), also reported as AIB3, TRBP, RAP250, NRC and PRIP, directly binds to and functions as a coactivator molecule of nuclear receptors and many other transcription factors. In particular, our previous results from microinjection of anti-ASC2 antibody demonstrated that ASC-2 is required for transactivation by nuclear receptors and AP-1 in vivo. Here we show that ASC-2 belongs to a steady-state complex of approximately 2 MDa(ASCOM for ASC-2 complex) in HeLa nuclei, which contains mammalian homologues of Drosophila Trithorax group(Trx-G) proteins ALR-1, ALR-2, HALR and ASH2. ALR-1/2 and HALR contain a SET domain that specifically methylates histone H3 lysine 4(K4). We further demonstrate that retinoic acid receptor(RAR) transactivation requires retinoid-dependent recruitment of ASCOM to DNA-bound RAR in vivo. Thus, ASCOM represents the first mammalian coactivator complex with H3/K4-methylase activity, directly recruited to nuclear receptors.

An estimated 1 billion mobile phone were sold globally in the year 2006. In Korea, people watch television 3.17 hours in a day. Television isn't what it used to be. Digital TV provides both interactivity and high definition. Mobile phone also transferred from 2G to 3G or 3.5G. This means the complexity of TV and mobile phone is increased, design of user interface is more difficult. Unlike the personal computer industry, TV and mobile phone industries have no standard user interface. A comparative study for user interface between TV and mobile phone is studied. User, task, system are analyzed in requirement analysis. User interface model and interaction are also analyzed between TV and mobile phone. This study provides some insights for user interface design. First, the UI designer have to consider another products because one user using one product at the same time using another products. Experience for one product affects that for another product. Second, TV and mobile phone show very similar pattern, especially interaction task and input interaction. Third, there are not sometimes optimized experience between service operator and device manufacturer. Cooperative design between them is required.

Phenolic compounds such as isoflavones contribute to the antioxidant properties of soybean. This study investigated differences in the phenolic content and antioxidant activity of ten soybean cultivars grown in two different locations in Korea. We observed a wide range of variation in total isoflavone and phenolic content by location and cultivar. The total isoflavone content of cultivars grown at Pyeongchang (sub-highland) was significantly higher than that in cultivars grown at Gangneung (lowland). In contrast, the total phenolic content of cultivars grown at Gangneung was greater than that of cultivars grown at Pyeongchang. The radical scavenging activity of DPPH was similar to that of the total phenolic content rather than that of the total isoflavone content. These results suggest that antioxidant activity of soybean was associated with phenolic compounds rather than isoflavones. To identify the individual antioxidant components, we used an on-line HPLC-$ABTS^+$-based assay system, ESI/MS, and NMR. The results showed that the strongest antioxidant activity was linked to epicatechin.
