      • The consumption of tea and coffee in Turkey and emerging new trends

        The aim of this study is to determine the tea and coffee consumption habits of individuals in Adana and İzmir and to identify how the new trends are effective in consumption patterns. Therefore, the research is based on a comparison of two cities with distinctive culinary culture. Questionnaire technique was used to collect the data. Surveys were administered to 806 people in Adana and İzmir, Turkey. The research shows that tea is preferred in Adana (63.3%), whereas participants in İzmir opt for coffee (53.4%). The ratio of tasting international regional coffees is higher in İzmir than in Adana. In both cities, black tea and Turkish coffee are among the most consumed drinks. Despite the increasing tendency of foreign beverages due to the impact of globalization, the local people kept their interest in tea and Turkish coffee drink which is a component of the national intangible cultural heritage of Turkey. It is recommended that foreign businesses should include these traditional drinks on the menu.

        Isolated Right Ventricular Apical Hypoplasia: A Case Report with 18 Years of Follow Up

        Isolated right ventricular (RV) hypoplasia is a rare congenital anomaly in which the apical trabecular component of the ventricle fails to develop. In severe forms of isolated RV hypoplasia, patients usually develop cyanosis early in life and require prompt surgical intervention. Mild forms, however, can be asymptomatic until the development of severe tricuspid regurgitation due to annular dilatation. We report a 50-year-old woman with isolated RV apical hypoplasia who presented to our hospital 18 years ago and was followed with serial imaging studies.

        An Investigation on Geometric Properties of Analytic Functions with Positive and Negative Coefficients Expressed by Hypergeometric Functions

        A New Approach to the Prophylaxis of Cyclic Vomiting: Topiramate

        Background/Aims The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of topiramate and propranolol in preventing pediatric cyclic vomiting syndrome. Methods A retrospective medical-record review of patients who underwent prophylaxis after receiving a diagnosis of cyclic vomiting syndrome was performed. Patients who completed at least 12 months of treatment were included in the analysis. Responder rate, and adverseevent rates were also calculated from all patients. Response to treatment was assessed as the total number of vomiting attacks per year. Patients in whom the frequency of vomiting attack reduced greater or equal to 50% were defined as responders, and the remaining patients were classified as nonresponders. Results A total of 38 patients who were treated prophylactically with either topiramate (16 patients) or propranolol (22 patients) were identified. Fifty-nine percent of the patients in the propranolol group and 81% of the patients in the topiramate group reported freedom from attacks. A decrease of more than 50% in attacks per year occurred in 23% of patients in the propranolol group and 13% of patients in the topiramate group. The responder rates were 81% for propranolol group and 94% for topiramate group (P = 0.001). Despite minor adverse effects (drowsiness, nervousness, and dizziness) observed in a few patients, the adverse event rates were not significantly different between the 2 groups (P = 0.240). Conclusions The efficacy of topiramate was superior to propranolol for the prophylaxis of pediatric cyclic vomiting syndrome.

        Selective molecularly imprinted polymer for the analysis of chlorpyrifos in water samples

        In this paper, a new molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) method was described for thedetermination of the chlorpyrifos in water samples. A thiol-ene based UV-cured polymer was preparedby mixing glyoxal bis (-diallyl acetal), pentaerythritol tetrakis (3-mercaptopropionate), polyethyleneglycol diacrylate (PEGDA), and photoinitiator. Chlorpyrifos was added to the prepared polymer as atemplate analyte, and its analysis was performed by gas chromatography with mass detection (GC–MS). The influence of some analytical parameters was studied. We found that the use of the molecularlyimprinted polymer (MIP) UV-cured disc provides an easy, selective, and available solution for removingchlorpyrifos from water samples.

        Real-time large-scale hybrid testing for seismic performance evaluation of smart structures

        Numerous devices exist for reducing or eliminating seismic damage to structures. These include passive dampers, semi-active dampers, and active control devices. The performance of structural systems with these devices has often been evaluated using numerical simulations. Experiments on structural systems with these devices, particularly at large-scale, are lacking. This paper describes a real-time hybrid testing facility that has been developed at the Lehigh University NEES Equipment Site. The facility enables real-time large-scale experiments to be performed on structural systems with rate-dependent devices, thereby permitting a more complete evaluation of the seismic performance of the devices and their effectiveness in seismic hazard reduction. The hardware and integrated control architecture for hybrid testing developed at the facility are presented. An application involving the use of passive elastomeric dampers in a three story moment resisting frame subjected to earthquake ground motions is presented. The experiment focused on a test structure consisting of the damper and diagonal bracing, which was coupled to a nonlinear analytical model of the remaining part of the structure (i.e., the moment resisting frame). A tracking indictor is used to track the actuator ability to achieve the command displacement during a test, enabling the quality of the test results to be assessed. An extension of the testbed to the real-time hybrid testing of smart structures with semi-active dampers is described.

        The past of Japanese criminal law can be traced back to Taiho Code. The criminal laws before modern era tended towards leniency. As the first modern criminal law, the 1880 Criminal Code made discretion almost impossible, and therefore was replaced by the current 1907 Criminal Code. The 1907 Criminal Code was enacted under the influence of the criminal theory of Germany, with absorbing the viewpoints of modern schools of criminal theory, and is honored as “the unique criminal law worldwide”. In order to adapt to the social reality, the 1907 Criminal Code was being amended constantly, and the present of Japanese criminal can be said as the era of the victims. As to the future of Japanese criminal law, it is not the time to revise the criminal law completely. When partially amending the criminal law, attention should be paid to the raising of statutory penalty, the unification of imprisonment, the abolish of death penalty and the introduction of security disposition. 日本刑法的过去可追溯到《大宝律令》,近代以前的刑法整体上体现了宽刑主义。近代第一部刑法1880 年刑法由于导致刑罚裁量余地微乎其微,仅实施了26 年后就被1907 年现行刑法替代。现行刑法的制定受德国刑法学的影响,同时吸收了近代学派的观点,被誉为“世界上独一无二的刑法”。为适应时代需求与社会现实,现行刑法不断受到修正,可以说日本刑法的现在属于被害人时代。就日本刑法的未来而言,全面修订刑法的时代仍尚未到来,将来在部分修正刑法时,需要注意法定刑的重罚化、自由刑的单一化、废止死刑、新增保安处分等方面的问题。

      • Automatic Acquisition of Lexical-Functional Grammar Resources from a Japanese Dependency Corpus

        This paper describes a method for automatic acquisition of wide-coverage treebank-based deep linguistic resources for Japanese, as part of a project on treebank-based induction of multilingual resources in the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG). We automatically annotate LFG f-structure functional equations (i.e. labelled dependencies) to the Kyoto Text Corpus version 4.0 (KTC4) (Kurohashi and Nagao 1997) and the output of of Kurohashi-Nagao Parser (KNP) (Kurohashi and Nagao 1998), a dependency parser for Japanese. The original KTC4 and KNP provide unlabelled dependencies. Our method also includes zero pronoun identification. The performance of the f-structure annotation algorithm with zero-pronoun identification for KTC4 is evaluated against a manually-corrected Gold Standard of 500 sentences randomly chosen from KTC4 and results in a pred-only dependency f-score of 94.72%. The parsing experiments on KNP output yield a pred-only dependency f-score of 82.08%.
