Vector-borne diseases are transmitted to humans by blood-feeding arthropods such as mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas. These cold-blooded animals are influenced by environmental change. A recent report by IPCC showed that the emission of greenhouse gases has already changed world climates. Heat waves in Europe, rises in global mean sea level, summer droughts and wild fires, more intense precipitation, and increasing numbers of large cyclones, hurricanes and typhoon may be typical example of extreme climate phenomena related to global warming. High temperatures during winter season may increase survival rate among arthropod vectors in Temperate Zone. Warming may accelerate the spread of mosquitoes such as Aedes albopictus in the northern parts of Japan and European countries. The spread of the mosquito vector through global used-tire trading in recent decades to Africa, the Mideast, Europe, and North and South America caused an outbreak of Chikungunya fever in north Italy in 2007.

Purpose: Single-agent interferon (IFN) is no longer regarded as a standard option for first-line systemic treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in Western countries. However, some patients with favorable-risk RCC may still achieve complete and long-lasting remission in response to IFN treatment. The present study compared favorable-risk Japanese patients with metastatic RCC Japanese patients who had been treated with IFN or tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy as a first-line systemic therapy. Materials and Methods: From 1995 to 2014, a total of 48 patients with favorable risk as defined by the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center criteria who did not receive adjuvant systemic therapy were retrospectively enrolled in this study. We assessed the tumor response rate, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). Results: The objective response rate for first-line therapy was 29% in the IFN group and 47% in the TKI group, but this difference did not reach the level of statistical significance. Median OS for IFN and TKI was 71 and 47 months, respectively (p=0.014). Median first-line PFS for IFN and TKI was 20 and 16 months, respectively (no significant difference). First-line IFN therapy did not prove inferior to TKI therapy in terms of OS according to metastatic sites. Conclusions: IFN is associated with a survival benefit in Japanese patients with favorable-risk metastatic RCC in the era of targeted therapy. Further prospective study is needed.

In seismic design of building frames, dampers are designed to absorb an earthquake's energy. Conventional steel tension braces havedisadvantages, such as pinching or deterioration of stiffness and strength under cyclic loading. A new type of elasto-plastic damper canpotentially avoid such disadvantages at a relatively low cost. Main characteristics of the damper are twofold: i) hardening effect causedby geometric nonlinearity, and ii) asymmetric hysteretic restoring force in tensile and compressive loading conditions. The objective ofthe study is to present a constitutive model and identify the corresponding parameters. The process of parameter identification of themodel is formulated as a non-smooth optimization problem and derivative-free optimization methods are suited for the problem. Throughnumerical examples, we investigate the seismic response reduction property of the damper. The results demonstrate the effectiveness ofthe optimization approach.
A Sensor Network using Content-Aware Messaging Network Architecture

The present paper describes an approach to the construction of a sensor network using a messaging network. A messaging network is an over lay network with a set of content-aware message handling ca-pabilities. The use of a messaging network can reduce the complexity and maintenance burden of integrated sensor information systems. Message mediation(afunction of the messaging network) enables interoperation of various applications and integration of diverse sensor data. Subscription(an other concept in the messaging network) enables proper information delivery of the sensor data to each user. The proposed approach is helpful in implementing an SOA-based sensor network and enables flexible sensor network configuration and utilization.
