<P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>Nineteen of the ∼40 RR Lyr stars in the <I>Kepler</I> field have been identified as candidate non‐Blazhko (or unmodulated) stars. In this paper we present the results of Fourier decomposition of the time‐series photometry of these stars acquired during the first 417 d of operation (Q0–Q5) of the <I>Kepler</I> telescope. Fourier parameters based on ∼18 400 long‐cadence observations per star (and ∼150 000 short‐cadence observations for FN Lyr and for AW Dra) are derived. None of the stars shows the recently discovered ‘period‐doubling’ effect seen in Blazhko variables; however, KIC 7021124 has been found to pulsate simultaneously in the fundamental and second overtone modes with a period ratio <I>P</I><SUB>2</SUB>/<I>P</I><SUB>0</SUB>∼ 0.593 05 and is similar to the double‐mode star V350 Lyr. Period change rates are derived from O − C diagrams spanning, in some cases, over 100 years; these are compared with high‐precision periods derived from the <I>Kepler</I> data alone. Extant Fourier correlations by Kovács, Jurcsik et al. (with minor transformations from the <I>V</I> to the <I>Kp</I> passband) have been used to derive underlying physical characteristics for all the stars. This procedure seems to be validated through comparisons of the <I>Kepler</I> variables with Galactic and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) RR Lyr stars. The most metal‐poor star in the sample is NR Lyr, with [Fe/H] =−2.3 dex; and the four most metal‐rich stars have [Fe/H] ranging from −0.6 to +0.1 dex. Pulsational luminosities and masses are found to be systematically smaller than <I>L</I> and <IMG src='/wiley-blackwell_img/equation/MNR_19317_mu1.gif' alt ='inline image'/> values derived from stellar evolution models, and are favoured over the evolutionary values when periods are computed with the Warsaw linear hydrodynamics code. Finally, the Fourier parameters are compared with theoretical values derived using the Warsaw non‐linear convective pulsation code.</P>

<P>The variable stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud star cluster NGC 2257 are reinvestigated using photometry (to ~20th mag) of over 400 new B, V CCD images taken with the CTIO 0.9 m telescope on 14 nights in 2007 December and 2008 January. New period searches have been made using two independent algorithms (CLEAN, Period04); the resultant periods of most of the stars are consistent with the pulsation periods derived previously, and where there are discrepancies these have been resolved. For the B and V light curves, accurate Fourier coefficients and parameters are given. Six new variable stars have been discovered (V45-50), including a bright candidate long-period variable star showing secondary oscillations (V45) and two anomalously bright RRc stars (V48 and V50), which are shown to be brightened and reddened by nearby red giant stars. Also discovered among the previously known variable stars are three double-mode RR Lyrae stars (V8, V16, and V34) and several Blazhko variables. Archival Hubble Space Telescope images and the photometry by Johnson et al. have been used to define better the properties of the most crowded variable stars. The total number of cluster variable stars now stands at forty-seven: 23 RRab stars, four of which show Blazhko amplitude variations; 20 RRc stars, one showing clear Blazhko variations and another showing possible Blazhko variations; the three RRd stars, all having the dominant period ~0.36 day and period ratios P<SUB>1</SUB>/P<SUB>0</SUB> ~0.7450; and an LPV star located near the tip of the red giant branch. A comparison of the RRd stars with those in other environments shows them to be most similar to those in IC4499.</P>
KEIRETSUS, INFLUENTIAL BANKS, AND FINANCIAL DISTRESS: EVIDENCE FROM JAPAN AND AUSTRIA

In this study we examine the likeliness of financial distress in Austria and Japan. It is argued that both countries are highly comparable in respect to their bank oriented financial systems and that the keiretsu governance system in Japan lowers the probability of financial distress for member firms. We compare the relative probabilities of observed financial distress between Japan and Austria. Our evidence suggests that the probability of financial distress is lower in Japanese keiretsu firms relative to Austrian firms. Consistent with our hypothesis, we find that non-keiretsu Japanese firms and Austrian firms have similar probabilities of financial distress.

A vast portion of human disease results when the process of apoptosis is defective. Disorders resulting from inappropriate cell death range from autoimmune and neurodegenerative conditions to heart disease. Conversely, prevention of apoptosis is the hallmark of cancer and confounds the efficacy of cancer therapeutics. In the search for optimal targets that would enable the control of apoptosis, members of the BCL-2 family of anti- and pro-apoptotic factors have figured prominently. Development of BCL-2 antisense approaches, small molecules, and BH3 peptidomimetics has met with both success and failure. Success-because BCL-2 proteins play essential roles in apoptosis. Failure-because single targets for drug development have limited scope. By examining the activity of the BCL-2 proteins in relation to the mitochondrial landscape and drawing attention to the significant mitochondrial membrane alterations that ensue during apoptosis, we demonstrate the need for a broader based multi-disciplinary approach for the design of novel apoptosis-modulating compounds in the treatment of human disease.

Two field tests were conducted in 1995 to examine the effects of composts and soil amendments on physicochemical properties of soil in relation to Phytophthora root and crown rot of bell pepper. Chitosan, crab shell waste, humate, sewage sludge-yard trimmings, and wood chips were applied to test plots, some of which affected the levels of P, K, Mg, pH, and H. Physicochemical properties were not related with disease incidence, but percent organic matter, estimated nitrogen release, K, and Mg were correlated with total microbial activity. The elements K and Mg were especially responsible for the increased soil microbial activity that could affect development of root and crown rot of pepper.

Training programs must be designed to prepare physical and occupational therapy students to use electronic health records (EHRs) and interprofessional collaboration. This report aims to describe physical and occupational therapy students’ perceptions of integrating an academic EHR (AEHR) in their problem-based learning (PBL) curricula in the College of Health Professions, Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Connecticut, the United States. A paper-based case approach to PBL was adapted by creating patient cases in an AEHR. Students were asked to complete chart reviews and review provider notes to enhance their learning. An online survey was conducted to determine their perceptions of using AEHR from May 2014 to August 2015. Eighty-five students completed the survey, and 88.1% felt that using an AEHR was needed, and 82.4% felt that the additional notes enhanced their understanding of the interdisciplinary team. However, 83.5% reported the AEHR system increased the time needed to extract meaningful information. Incorporating an AEHR into curricula is essential to ensure students are adequately prepared for future patient interactions.

As an example of research activities in decontamination for decommissioning, new data are presented on the options for corrosion layer dissolution during the decommissioning decontamination, or persulfate regeneration for decontamination solutions re-use. For the management of spent decontamination solutions, new method based on solvent extraction of radionuclides into ionic liquid followed by electrodeposition of the radionuclides has been developed. Fields of applications of composite inorganic-organic absorbers or solid extractants with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) binding matrix for the treatment of liquid radioactive waste are reviewed; a method for americium separation from the boric acid containing NPP evaporator concentrates based on the TODGA-PAN material is discussed in more detail. Performance of a model of radionuclide transport, developed and implemented within the GoldSim programming environment, for the safety studies of the LLW/ILW repository is demonstrated on the specific case of the Richard repository (Czech Republic). Continuation and even broadening of these activities are expected in connection with the approaching end of the lifespan of the first blocks of the Czech NPPs.
