Background: Complementary and alternative medicine has been highly appreciated as a supportive regimen for classical treatment strategies. Here we offer a nutrition-based adjuvant therapy for liver fibrosis, a major risk factor for cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Aim of the study: To evaluate the possible hepatoprotective effects of Jerusalem artichoke tubers (JAT) in combination with interferon and ribavirin. Materials and Methods: Twelve groups of rats were administered JAT, interferon and ribavirin either separately or in combination from day one of $CCL_4$ administration until the end of the study. Animals were killed after 8 weeks of $CCL_4$-induced hepatotoxicity. Results: Hepatocytes from rats treated with triple combination of interferon, ribavirin, and JAT showed more less normal architecture compared to $CCL_4$-treated rats. We also detected significantly higher hepatic protein expression levels of p53, BAX and transforming growth factor-${\beta}$ (TGF-${\beta}$) in the $CCL_4$-intoxicated group compared to normal controls, as evidenced by immunohistochemical staining and western blotting analyses. Addition of JAT as a supportive regimen improved response to ribavirin and interferon and effectively participated in retaining normal histopathological and biochemical criteria and significantly lowered protein expression of p53, BAX, and TGF-${\beta}$. Conclusions: We suggest that addition of JAT as a supportive r egimen to interferon and ribavirin effectively potentiates their anti-fibrotic effects.

Background: HCV is a major global health problem. IL-27 is a member of the IL-6/IL-12 cytokine family with a broad range of anti-inflammatory properties. Recent studies highlighted the effect of a SNP in the IL-27 promoter region on modulating the progression of infectious diseases and individual responses to therapy. Aim of the work: The present study investigated the potential role of (-964 A/G) SNP in the promoter region of IL-27p28 gene (alleles rs153109) on the outcome of HCV infection among genotype 4a infected patients. Materials and Methods: HCV genotyping confirmed that all of the HCV-infected patients had genotype 4a infection. Genomic DNA was extracted from 111 patients with chronic HCV infection, 42 spontaneous resolvers (SR) and 16 healthy controls. IL- 27p28.rs153109 genotyping was assessed using PCR-RFLP then confirmed by DNA sequencing. Results: The frequency of IL-27-p28.rs153109AA, AG, and GG genotypes among chronically infected subjects were 74.8 %, 25.2%, and 0% while among the SR, they were 57.1%, 35.7%, and 7.14%, respectively. Our data show the unique presence of G/G genotype in the SR group (3 patients; 7.14%). Moreover, the "G" allele frequencies among chronic and resolved subjects were 12.6% and 25.0%, respectively (p=0.0136). Importantly, subjects with the GG genotype were more likely to clear their HCV infection than those with the AA genotype (p=0.0118). Conclusions: HCV genotype 4a subjects with the IL-27-p28.rs153109 A/G and G/G genotype were more likely to clear their HCV infection. Therefore, we propose IL- 27p28.rs153109SNPas a genetic biomarker for predicting HCV infection outcome.

Purpose: To find parameters that can increase alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) sensitivity and so help in accurate diagnosis and rapid management of hepatocullular carcinoma (HCC), as AFP has limited utility of distinguishing HCC from benign hepatic disorders for its high false-positive and false negative rates. Materials and Methods: Serum levels of AFP, 5'-nucleotidase enzyme activity (5-NU) and leucine aminopeptidase enzyme (LAP) activity were measured in 40 individuals. Results: LAP and 5'NU were elevated in HCC at p<0.001. Pearson correlation coefficients showed that changes in AFP exhibited positive correlation with both 5'-NU and LAP at (p<0.001). The complementary use of LAP only with AFP resulted in an increase in sensitivity of AFP from 75% to 90% in detecting HCC. The complementary use of both LAP and 5-NU with AFP resulted in an increased sensitivity of AFP in detecting HCC from 75% to 95%. Conclusions: LAP and 5-FU can be determined in HCC patients in combination with AFP to improve its sensitivity and decrease false negative results.

Productions, mechanical and microstructural analyses of bioglass/sheep hydroxyapatite (SHA) composites are introduced. Bioglass were added to calcinated SHA with various concentrations 5 and 10 wt. %. Powder mixture compacted with pressure(350 MPa) in steel moulds to obtain cylinder samples. As the next step, samples sintered in air at various temperatures (1000,1100, 1200, 1300 oC for 4 hrs). Compression strength test, density and the Vickers microhardness (HV) measurements werecarried out and microstructural characterizations were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-raydiffraction analysis (XRD) in order to determine optimum sintering temperature and mechanical properties. At last averagehardness value 1612 ± 80 HV, average density of 2.65 ± 0.31 g/cm3, and compressive strength value of σavr = 99.14 MPa wereobtained by sintering at 1300 oC with the addition of 5 wt. % bioglass in SHA. Results show potential of brittle biomaterialbut resistant to plastic strain.

The work aims to evaluate the necessary physical properties of Abrasion Resistant Pavers designed for high volume pedestrian and road vehicle traffic and their influence on the selection of raw materials and ceramic processes. The pavers' specifications such as high strength and ware resistance demand a careful clay preparation, slow drying, slow firing and a balanced chemical and mineralogical composition. Therefore, developing abrasion Resistant Pavers in existing modern brickmaking plants, which are designed primarily for making bricks and pavers for domestic applications, has become a challenge for manufacturers and ceramic professionals. The significance of quality control and research and development in the production of these high class pavers is also emphasised in this work through the investigation of a paver that exhibits shrinkage cracking.
A Review of Line Suspended Inspection Robots for Power Transmission Lines
Ekren Nazmi,Karagöz Zehra,Şahin Mustafa 대한전기학회 2024 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.19 No.4
Inspection and maintenance of power transmission lines are crucial in terms of providing uninterrupted power for the consumers. Inspection and maintenance of transmission lines passing through areas that are diffi cult to reach and pass through are usually carried out by workers or with the help of helicopter. These methods are not eff ective in terms of time, energy, safety, economy, and effi ciency. Transmission line inspection robots can perform this task safely, effi ciently, economically, quickly with the least risk. In this study, theoretical and experimental studies on line suspended power transmission line inspection robots in the literature are examined. Details of robots with diff erent mechanisms are presented. Robots, which perform the line inspection process with the help of cameras and sensors, can also overcome various obstacles on the line. Produced robot prototypes have been tested in the fi eld and laboratory environment. In this paper, these robots are grouped as those that move on live lines and ground wires. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of robots have been determined depending on the line they move. Looking at the studies in the literature, it can be said that the inspection of power transmission lines with the help of robots is the most appropriate method compared to traditional methods.

Hakan Ceyran,Figen Narin,Nazmi Narin,Hülya Akgün,A. Bahar Ceyran,Figen Öztürk,Yiğit Akçah 연세대학교의과대학 2008 Yonsei medical journal Vol.49 No.5
Purpose: Melatonin, the most potent scavenger of toxic free radicals, has been found to be effective in protecting against pathological states due to the release of reactive oxygen species. This study was performed to establish the effect of high dose melatonin on protection against ischemia- reperfusion (I/R) injury in rat hearts. Materials and Methods: Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. They were separated into four groups of ten rats each. A left coronary artery occlusion was induced in the rats by ligating the artery for 20 minutes and then releasing the ligation (reperfusion) afterwards. The control group was Group A. Group B was subjected to myocardial ischemia-reperfusion without any treatment, while Group C underwent myocardial ischemia-reperfusion with a melatonin treatment before the ischemia. Group D was subjected to myocardial ischemia- reperfusion with a melatonin treatment before the reperfusion. After 20 minutes of reperfusion, blood samples were obtained from each group for biochemical studies, and the animals were sacrificed for histological and, immunohistochemical examinations of the myocardial tissue. Results: We found that the cardiac troponin T(cTn-T) levels were significantly increased in Group B when all groups were compared. In the Group C rats treated with melatonin, the cTn-T values were significantly lower than those in Groups B and D. In addition, malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidant enzymes including, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were lower than those in Group B in the melatonin treated groups. The differences were statistically significant (p<0.05). Histopathologic and immunohistopathologic studies also supported the effectiveness of melatonin. Conclusion: Our study suggests that high dose melatonin, appears to offer protection against cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injuries in rats by scavenging the free radicals and could have a potential clinical use in the management of myocardial ischemia.
