        Response to Drought Stress of Two Strawberry Cultivars (cv. Kurdistan and Selva)

        In order to evaluate the effect of different levels of drought stress on some physiological parameters in strawberry, one experiment with potted strawberry cultivars ‘Kurdistan’ and ‘Selva’ was conducted in summer 2008. The experiment was performed with four drought stress treatments [control (75% of field capacity), S1: mild drought stress (50% of field capacity), S2: severe drought stress (25% of field capacity) and R: one day after rewatering]. Physiological parameters such as: leaf relative water content (RWC), membrane stability index (MSI), net CO2 assimilation rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E), water use efficiency (A/gs), chlorophyll, proline and soluble carbohydrate contents were measured in leaves of strawberry subjected to different drought stress conditions as well as one day after rewatering. The results showed that RWC, MSI, A, gs, E, and chlorophyll of two cultivars decreased as soil water content was reduced. A/gs was highest under mild water stress for both cultivars. ‘Kurdistan’ had lower A, gs and E than ‘Selva’. RWC, MSI and A/gs of ‘Kurdistan’ were higher than ‘Selva’. Recovery of these parameters was faster for ‘Kurdistan’ than ‘Selva’. Chlorophyll contents of ‘Kurdistan’ was higher than ‘Selva’. Chlorophyll recovery didn’t occur one day after rewatering. Amount of proline and soluble carbohydrates increased under severe drought stress. ‘Kurdistan’ had higher proline content compared to ‘Selva’ under severe drought stress. Amount of proline and soluble carbohydrates were reduced in both the cultivars one day after rewatering. This study revealed that moderate drought stress affects gas exchange while severe drought stress affects chlorophyll, proline and soluble carbohydrates levels.

        On the Universality of Auxiliary Verbs

        Cross-linguistically, it has often been observed that there is no any specific language-independent formal definition that can be used to determine the characterization of any given element as an auxiliary verb. This paper, though it agrees to some extent with this observation, argues that there is still room to find some universal properties that help us end up with the conclusion that auxiliaries and lexical verbs are two distinct types of syntactic entities. To this end, this paper describes the characteristics necessary for what is to count as an auxiliary verb. Having done that, the paper turns to illustrate the most common properties that can be found among languages in order to find a clear universally agreed definition of an auxiliary verb.

        Bilateral Macular Hole Following Myopic Photorefractive Keratectomy

        A 42-year-old man was admitted to our clinic complaining of visual distortion in his left eye two monthsafter bilateral myopic photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Macular optical coherence tomography (OCT)showed a stage II macular hole in the left eye. Simultaneous OCT in the right eye showed vitreous tractionand distortion of the outer retina. One month later, the patient underwent vitrectomy for the left eye, andthe macular hole was closed. Two months after that, the patient complained of visual distortion in the righteye, and OCT revealed increased traction and accentuated outer retinal distortion indicating a stage IBmacular hole. Traction attenuated later without any intervention. The short interval between PRK and holeformation, bilateral involvement, and the moderate refractive error in this case highlight the possible role ofPRK in aggravating vitreoretinal interface abnormalities. We recommend the addition of PRK to the list ofprocedures that may be associated with the formation of a macular hole.

        Increasing Consistent Condom Use in sub-Saharan Africa

        Despite reports of availability of condoms in many African countries, the spread of HIV infection remains unabated and is a major public health problem as consistent condom use has all, but become a theoretical possibility. In sub-Saharan Africa, consistent condom use is constrained by a myriad of social, structural, and cultural factors. Programs of condom use social marketing in sub-Saharan Africa have either failed or appeared to have only a modest impact in reducing the spread of HIV. This article reviews determinants of condom use in sub-Saharan Africa; provides the impact of condom social marketing in sub-Saharan Africa thus far; and synthesizes the case for utility of community?based social marketing approach that augments and integrates community knowledge, skills, and resources to increase condom use for preventing the spread of HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa.

        Frameshift Deletion Mechanisms in Egyptian Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophy Families

        Partial gene deletion is the major type of mutation leading to Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and its mild allelic form, Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD). Amplification of the genomic DNAs of 152 unrelated dystrophin patients using multiple primers detected 78 (51.3%) probands with deletion mutations. We predicted the translational reading frame for all the deletions in Egyptian dystrophin males. The frameshift rule was confirmed positively ranging for 50 to 67% of the cases depending on the type of disease. We discuss ways of accounting for some exceptions from the frameshift hypothesis in the central and proximal regions. These explanations may help in developing procedures for reducing the severity of dystrophin phenotypes to restore the correct frame by disrupting the translational fidelity. Great efforts have been put into the development of effective ‘gene correction’ procedures via such intrinsic mechanisms. In addition, we mapped regional difference in deletion mutation frequencies within the DMD gene locus between the different Egyptian governorates. There were no double deletions in the Egyptian dystrophin males.

        Improvement of Dynamic Behavior of Shunt Active Power Filter Using Fuzzy Instantaneous Power Theory

        Dynamic behavior of the harmonic detection part of an active power filter (APF) has an essential role in filter compensation performances during transient conditions. Instantaneous power (p?q) theory is extensively used to design harmonic detectors for active filters. Large overshoot of p?q theory method deteriorates filter response at a large and rapid load change. In this study the harmonic estimation of an APF during transient conditions for balanced three-phase nonlinear loads is conducted. A novel fuzzy instantaneous power (FIP) theory is proposed to improve conventional p?q theory dynamic performances during transient conditions to adapt automatically to any random and rapid nonlinear load change. Adding fuzzy rules in p?q theory improves the decomposition of the alternating current components of active and reactive power signals and develops correct reference during rapid and random current variation. Modifying p?q theory internal high-pass filter performance using fuzzy rules without any drawback is a prospect. In the simulated system using MATLAB/SIMULINK, the shunt active filter is connected to a rapidly time-varying nonlinear load. The harmonic detection parts of the shunt active filter are developed for FIP theory-based and p?q theory-based algorithms. The harmonic detector hardware is also developed using the TMS320F28335 digital signal processor and connected to a laboratory nonlinear load. The software is developed for FIP theory-based and p?q theory-based algorithms. The simulation and experimental tests results verify the ability of the new technique in harmonic detection of rapid changing nonlinear loads.

        The Minimalist Program and its New Insight to the Concept of Universal Grammar

        The prime concern of this paper is to introduce the art of the Minimalist Program to the theory of grammar. Besides presenting the basic principles and techniques that make this new theory moving away from the over-generation and filtering character of its predecessors, this paper discusses some new ideas articulated recently by Chomsky such as changing the function of movement and the Extended Projection Principle (EPP) feature, or proposing new theories such as Phases and Feature Inheritance. These new generative ideas can express the sharp contrast between the conceptions of Universal Grammar in the Minimalist Program and the previous generative theories.

        Modeling Dynamic Business Rules using A Dynamic Knowledge Approach

        Business Rules are formal statements about the data and processes of an enterprise. They present projections of the organization’s constraints and ways of working on their supporting information systems. Therefore, their collection, structuring and organization should be central activities within information systems. In an enterprise, business rules are used to represent certain aspects of a business domain (static rules) or business policy (dynamic rules). Hence, regarding problem domains in the organization, business rules are classified into two groups: static and dynamic business rules. The paper introduces a new concept of business rules, Extended Dynamic Business Rule (EDBR) which contains the results of the occurrence of business rule’s action. The focus of this paper is in the organizing, defining and modeling of such business rules using Mineau’s approach. Mineau’s approach is an extension of Sowa’s Conceptual Graph theory.
