Glass discs functionalized with alkynyl (GDA) terminated monolayers were prepared and incubated in $AgNO_3$ solution (GDA-Ag). The modified functional glass surfaces were characterized by X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS). The potential of GDA and GDA-Ag as antimicrobial surfaces was investigated. Anti-microbial efficacies of GDA against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Candida albicans was relatively low ranging from 4.67 to 17.00%. However, the GDA-Ag was very effective and its antimicrobial efficacy ranged from 99.90 to 99.99% against the same set of microbial strains except for C. albicans where it was 95.50%. The durability of the Ag bonded to the terminal alkynyl groups was studied by placing the GDA-Ag in PBS buffer solution (pH 7.4) for two weeks. Initially, the silver release was relatively fast, with 40.05 ppb of silver released in first 24 h followed by a very slow and constant release. To study the potential of GDA-Ag for medical applications, in vitro cytotoxicity of GDA-Ag against Human Embryonic Kidney 293 (HEK293) cell lines was studied using WST-assay. The cytotoxicity of the GDA-Ag was very low (5%) and was almost comparable to the control (blank glass disc) indicating that GDA-Ag has a promising potential for medical applications.

Controlled Ondansetron Release Based on Hydroxyethyl Starch Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate
Tahir, Muhammad Nazir,Adnan, Ahmad,Cho, Eunae,Jung, Seunho Korean Chemical Society 2012 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.33 No.12
Presented study describes the synthesis of photo cross-linkable and water soluble hydroxyethyl starch hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HESHEMA) samples with different degree of substitution (DS) by functionalization of hydroxyethyl starch (HES) with hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) or hydroxyethyl methacrylate carbonylimidazole (HEMACI) in DMSO using two different routes. It was revealed that the reaction time for HESHEMA synthesis can be reduced from 5 days to 24 h by conducting the reaction at $80^{\circ}C$ instead of at room temperature. Solubility of HESHEMA was found to be dependent on DS which in turn was dependent on ratio between HES and HEMA or HEMACI. HESHEMA samples with DS > 0.24 depicted insoluble in water, whereas the samples with DS < 0.05 did not form appreciable gel. HESHEMA samples with appropriate DS were converted into hydrogels by cross-linking polymer chains under UV radiations and resulting HESHEMA hydrogels showed swelling up to 1200%. Application of HESHEMA in controlled drug delivery was investigated by diffusion based encapsulation of Ondansetron, a serotonin 5-$HT_3$ receptor antagonist drug, mainly used for nausea and vomiting treatment.

Iron is an essential nutrient for nitrogen-fixing legume root nodules, and the chelation of ferrous iron plays an important role in the mobility and availability of iron to the legume. In the present study, we investigated the iron-binding properties of low-molecular weight succinoglycans isolated from the nitrogen-fixing bacterium, Sinorhizobium meliloti. The low-molecular weight succinoglycans comprising three monomers (M1-M3), four dimers (D1-D4), and six trimers (T1-T6) of the succinoglycan repeating unit were purified by various chromatographic techniques. Interestingly, the colorimetric ferrozine method showed that the succinoglycans T6, M3, and D3 demonstrated a ferrous iron chelating ability of 83, 63, and 38 % per mg, respectively. The individual binding constants were determined as 43703, 2313, and 760 M(-1) for succinoglycans T6, M3, and D3 using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The complexation of succinoglycan and ferrous iron can cause structural changes, which were analyzed by circular dichroism spectroscopy. Furthermore, the complex could provide antioxidant activity through an anti-Fenton reaction. These results demonstrate that the low-molecular weight succinoglycans can effectively modulate iron biochemistry as a novel ferrous iron-acquisition system of S. meliloti.
