TEACHING ASTRONOMY - USING HYBRID TEXTBOOKS TO COMBAT ACADEMIC E-CHEATING

To accommodate today's higher education student, fewer textbooks are printed and more are becoming digital. Keeping with the modern era, hybrid versions of textbooks have all end-of-chapter assessment content moved to digital learning systems such as MindTap$^{TM}$ by Cengage $Learning^{(R)}$. In this work, we introduce new pedagogical strategies to combat academic e-cheating, specifically cheating on assessments given in online astronomy courses. The strategies we present in this work are employed in Horizons: Exploring the Universe, Hybrid, 13th Edition, and Universe, Hybrid, 8th Edition, by Seeds, Backman, and Montgomery.
Cariprazine — an Alternative Treatment for Clozapine-resistant Schizophrenia?

Treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) poses a significant therapeutic challenge in psychiatric practice. Clozapine is recognized as a treatment of choice in TRS but is not always effective in alleviating patients’ symptoms. Additionally, clozapine therapy is associated with multiple side effects and monitoring requirements that often limit its use and negatively affect patients’ compliance with the treatment. Although clozapine augmentation options are available, there is currently no alternative monotherapy proven to be effective in TRS. We present a case of a young man with TRS who failed to respond to appropriate trials of risperidone, aripiprazole and also clozapine, and who experienced impairing adverse effects of clozapine that made further clozapine treatment not only futile but also detrimental to his health. He was successfully treated with cariprazine monotherapy, which culminated in the remission of his both positive and negative symptoms of psychosis as well as in the marked improvement in social functioning. Cariprazine, a newer atypical antipsychotic endowed with a D3-preferring mode of action, may offer a better tolerated and more acceptable treatment option for patients with difficult-to-treat psychotic symptoms.
SIMULATED IMPACTS TO NON-MAGNETIC CATACLYSMIC VARIABLE DISKS

Dust has recently been found to be prevalent in compact binaries such as non-magnetic Cataclysmic Variable systems. As a possible source of this dust is from solid bodies, we explore impacts to non-magnetic Cataclysmic Variable disks. We use three-dimensional Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic simulations to search for impact signatures. From injections of whole bodies to these disks, we find pulse shapes in simulated bolometric light curves that resemble impact flashes in the light curves of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 event. As a result, we tentatively identify these light curve shapes as signatures of impacts.

Solid Viscoelastic Coupling Dampers (VCDs) provide distributed damping that improves the dynamic performance of tall buildings for both wind-storms and earthquakes for all amplitudes of vibration. They are configured in place of typical structural members in tall buildings and therefore do not occupy any architectural space. This paper summarizes the research and development at the University of Toronto in collaboration with Nippon Steel Engineering, 3M and Kinetica over the past two decades. In addition, impact studies on buildings incorporating the VCDs are presented, consisting of a wind sensitive 66-story building in Toronto, a dual-wind and seismic performance-based design of a 4-tower development in Manila and finally a 630 meter Megatall building in Southeast Asia in a severe seismic environment. In all applications the VCDs are shown to provide significant benefits in the dynamic performance under both wind and earthquake loading in a cost-effective manner.
International Tourism Opportunities in Korea

This paper will discuss Korea's increasing tourism deficit in the context of international brand-creation and the particular opportunities that Korea's current lack of brand gives the nation. With no existing international image, Korea finds itself in a rare position-it is first in line at its own palimpsest. Korea has an opportunity to create the initial conditions for the autocatalytic emergence of its own international tourist brand and success. These opportunities are focused around six related initiatives that can be loosely grouped into two categories: branding and image propagation.
