Effect of Aqueous and Ethanolic Extracts of Nigella sativa Seeds on Milk Production in Rats

        Hossein Hosseinzadeh,Mohsen Tafaghodi,Mojdeh Jalal Mosavi,Elahe Taghiabadi 사단법인약침학회 2013 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.6 No.1

Nigella sativa L. is used as a galactagogue in traditional medicine. Hence, the effects of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of N. sativa seeds on milk production in rats were evaluated. The measurement of milk production was by measuring pup weight during suckling period. The intraperitoneal LD50 values of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of N. sativa were 4.23 and 4.9 g/kg, respectively. The aqueous (0.5 g/kg) and ethanolic extracts (1 g/kg) increased milk production significantly (p < 0.001), producing about 31.3% and 37.6% more milk than control, respectively. During the study period, the pups gained weight with the aqueous (0.5 g/kg, p < 0.01) and ethanolic extracts (1 g/kg,p < 0.05). It is concluded that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of N. sativa can stimulate milk production in rats.

Effect of Aqueous and Ethanolic Extracts of Pimpinella anisum L. Seeds on Milk Production in Rats

        Hossein Hosseinzadeh,Mohsen Tafaghodi,Shirin Abedzadeh,Elahe Taghiabadi 사단법인약침학회 2014 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.7 No.4

Pimpinella anisum L. (P. anisum) is used as a galactagogue in traditional medicine; hence, the effect of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of P. anisum seeds on milk production in rats was evaluated. The milk production was assessed by measuring the pups’ weights during the suckling period. The intraperitoneal LD 50 values of P. anisum aqueous and ethanolic extracts were 4.93 and 3.77 g/kg, respectively. The aqueous (1 g/kg) and ethanolic ex- tracts (1 g/kg) increased the milk production significantly (p < 0.001), with about 68.1% and 81% more milk being produced, respectively, than in the control group. The pups gained weight during the study period with the aqueous (0.5 and 1 g/kg, p < 0.05) and ethanolic (0.5 and 1 g/kg, p < 0.01) extracts. Thus, P. anisum aqueous and ethanolic extracts can increase milk production in rats.

TB Trifusion Antigen Adsorbed on Calcium Phosphate Nanoparticles Stimulates Strong Cellular Immunity in Mice

        Yousef Amini,Bagher Moradi,Mohsen Tafaghodi,Zahra Meshkat,Kiarash Ghazvini,Mahdi Fasihi-Ramandi 한국생물공학회 2016 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.21 No.5

Among various vaccine candidates, subunit vaccines play an important role in immune protection against tuberculosis (TB). Calcium phosphate (CP) is considered as a strong inorganic adjuvant due to its great potential in increasing immune responses. The purpose of this study was to evaluate specific immune responses following the administration of trifusion-CP nanoparticles. The physiochemical properties of these nanoparticles, including morphology, particle size, zeta potential and adsorption rate, were measured in vitro. Subcutaneous immunization was performed three times on days 0, 14, and 28. Two weeks after the last administration, IFN-gamma, IL-4, and TGF-beta levels were measured by indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The trifusion protein was successfully adsorbed onto calcium phosphate nanoparticles. The mean sizes of the resultant trifusion- CPN and CPN were 97.84 ± 12.08 and 67 ± 11.85 nm, respectively. CPN containing trifusion had stronger ability to induce IFN-gamma than the control groups. IL-4 and TGF-beta secretions in trifusion and trifusion-CPN groups were higher than those in the PBS group. However, there was no significant (p > 0.05) difference in IL-4 and TGFbeta concentrations between trifusion group and trifusion- CPN group. Therefore, calcium phosphate nanoparticles are good candidates for immunization against TB because antigen can be easily adsorbed onto CPN and strong cellular immune responses against CPN-antigen can be stimulated.
