Sample size determination for conducting a pilot study to assess reliability of a questionnaire

Bujang Mohamad Adam,Omar Evi Diana,Foo Diana Hui Ping,Hon Yoon Khee 대한치과보존학회 2024 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.49 No.1

This article is a narrative review that discusses the recommended sample size requirements to design a pilot study to assess the reliability of a questionnaire. A list of various sample size tables that are based on the kappa agreement test, intra-class correlation test and Cronbach’s alpha test has been compiled together. For all calculations, type I error (alpha) was set at a maximum value of 0.05, and power was set at a minimum value of 80.0%. For the kappa agreement test, intra-class correlation test, and Cronbach’s alpha test, the recommended minimum sample size requirement based on the ideal effect sizes shall be at least 15, 22, and 24 subjects respectively. By making allowances for a non-response rate of 20.0%, a minimum sample size of 30 respondents will be sufficient to assess the reliability of the questionnaire. The clear guideline of minimum sample size requirement for the pilot study to assess the reliability of a questionnaire is discussed and this will ease researchers in preparation for the pilot study. This study provides justification for a minimum requirement of a sample size of 30 respondents specifically to test the reliability of a questionnaire.

An elaboration on sample size determination for correlations based on effect sizes and confidence interval width: a guide for researchers

Bujang Mohamad Adam 대한치과보존학회 2024 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.49 No.2

Objectives This paper aims to serve as a useful guide for sample size determination for various correlation analyses that are based on effect sizes and confidence interval width. Materials and Methods Sample size determinations are calculated for Pearson’s correlation, Spearman’s rank correlation, and Kendall’s Tau-b correlation. Examples of sample size statements and their justification are also included. Results Using the same effect sizes, there are differences between the sample size determination of the 3 statistical tests. Based on an empirical calculation, a minimum sample size of 149 is usually adequate for performing both parametric and non-parametric correlation analysis to determine at least a moderate to an excellent degree of correlation with acceptable confidence interval width. Conclusions Determining data assumption(s) is one of the challenges to offering a valid technique to estimate the required sample size for correlation analyses. Sample size tables are provided and these will help researchers to estimate a minimum sample size requirement based on correlation analyses.

InSpace Balloon for the Management of Massive Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tears: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

        Mohammad Daher,Adam Pearl,Zalaquett Ziad,Bassem T. Elhassan,Joseph A. Abboud,Mohamad Y. Fares,Khaled J. Saleh 대한정형외과학회 2023 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.15 No.5

Background: The best course of action for massive irreparable rotator cuff tears (MIRCTs) is not universally agreed upon. Numerous surgical techniques have been discussed. The implantation of a biodegradable spacer into the subacromial area has been documented since 2012 by several authors. The implantation method is touted as being simpler, repeatable, and less invasive than other solutions that are now available. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis, being the first of its kind, was to evaluate the literature to see the efficacy of InSpace balloon (ISB) implantation in the management of MIRCTs. Methods: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, and with 2 researchers assessing and analyzing each study separately, an extensive electronic search of the literature was conducted in the PubMed database from 1961 until July 27, 2022. Results: Fourteen studies were included in this systematic review and three in the meta-analysis. Eleven out of fourteen studies favored ISB use for MIRCTs, while only three were against its use. All spacers were arthroscopically implanted in the subacromial space. Three studies were included in the meta-analysis. The differences in the compared outcomes were statistically insignificant. Conclusions: A controversy about the use of ISB remains in patients with MIRCTs. Both good and bad outcomes were reported. However, the majority of patients had good clinical outcomes across several grading scales, radiographic evidence of improved impingement, and self-report that they would redo the procedure in hindsight. To draw more solid conclusions and have statistically significant results in the meta-analysis, more randomized controlled trials and comparative studies comparing this device to other treatments are needed.

A case report of complete cricotracheal separation: an experience from the east coast of Malaysia

Rozhan Atikah,Mohamad Adam,Rajet Khairul Azhar M.,Ahmad Mohd Zaki,Yusof Suhaimi Bin,Mohamed Wan Emelda Wan,Susibalan Bathma Devi,Ghani Nik Mohd Syukra Nik Abd,Asha’ari Zamzil Amin Bin 대한외상학회 2022 大韓外傷學會誌 Vol.35 No.4

Complete cricotracheal separation, which is the most severe type of laryngeal trauma, is an uncommonly seen injury that clinicians have limited experience in managing. However, it is potentially fatal. Due to limited exposure to this condition, mismanagement can occur, which may further aggravate the patient’s condition. The most crucial part of managing this injury is to establish a secure airway. Tracheostomy under local anesthesia is the preferred method of airway stabilization, in order to avoid further injuries to the airway caused by endotracheal intubation. Here, we discuss the management of complete cricotracheal separation based on a case experienced in the east coast region of Malaysia, where this type of injury is rarely encountered.

Bank Capital, Efficiency and Risk: Evidence from Islamic Banks

Isnurhadi ISNURHADI,Mohamad ADAM,Sulastri SULASTRI,Isni ANDRIANA,Muizzuddin MUIZZUDDIN 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.1

This study aims to evaluate the relationship between bank capital, efficiency, and risk in Islamic banks. We use data from 129 Islamic banks in the world, retrieved from various data sources. We retrieved specific banking data from Moody’s Analytics BankFocus and Thomson Reuters Eikon, while data at the country level was obtained from the World Bank website. This study uses various estimates both Pooled OLS (Ordinary Least Square) and Random Effect (RE). However, to overcome the issue of serial correlation which could cause bias in the results of the study, we used fixed-effect (FE) cluster estimates. The research results confirm the previous findings that bank capital positively affects bank stability (natural logarithm of Z-Score) and negatively affects credit risk (loan loss provision to total liabilities). The findings also show that efficiency has the same effect. The interaction test of bank capital and efficiency shows that efficiency encourages banks to reduce risk, including when bank capital is relatively lower. This finding is expected to have implications for the authorities to boost bank efficiency in addition to establishing several regulations related to capital. The efficiency implemented by the bank will encourage banks to act prudently so that the bank can maintain its performance through risk mitigation.

Outcome Prediction in Cerebral Venous Thrombosis: The IN-REvASC Score

        Piers Klein,Liqi Shu,Thanh N. Nguyen,James E. Siegler,Setareh Salehi Omran,Alexis N. Simpkins,Mirjam Heldner,Adam de Havenon,Hugo J. Aparicio,Mohamad Abdalkader,Marios Psychogios,Maria Cristina Vedova 대한뇌졸중학회 2022 Journal of stroke Vol.24 No.3

Background We identified risk factors, derived and validated a prognostic score for poor neurological outcome and death for use in cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT). Methods We performed an international multicenter retrospective study including consecutive patients with CVT from January 2015 to December 2020. Demographic, clinical, and radiographic characteristics were collected. Univariable and multivariable logistic regressions were conducted to determine risk factors for poor outcome, mRS 3-6. A prognostic score was derived and validated. Results A total of 1,025 patients were analyzed with median 375 days (interquartile range [IQR], 180 to 747) of follow-up. The median age was 44 (IQR, 32 to 58) and 62.7% were female. Multivariable analysis revealed the following factors were associated with poor outcome at 90- day follow-up: active cancer (odds ratio [OR], 11.20; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.62 to 27.14; P<0.001), age (OR, 1.02 per year; 95% CI, 1.00 to 1.04; P=0.039), Black race (OR, 2.17; 95% CI, 1.10 to 4.27; P=0.025), encephalopathy or coma on presentation (OR, 2.71; 95% CI, 1.39 to 5.30; P=0.004), decreased hemoglobin (OR, 1.16 per g/dL; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.31; P=0.014), higher NIHSS on presentation (OR, 1.07 per point; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.11; P=0.002), and substance use (OR, 2.34; 95% CI, 1.16 to 4.71; P=0.017). The derived IN-REvASC score outperformed ISCVT-RS for the prediction of poor outcome at 90-day follow-up (area under the curve [AUC], 0.84 [95% CI, 0.79 to 0.87] vs. AUC, 0.71 [95% CI, 0.66 to 0.76], χ2 P<0.001) and mortality (AUC, 0.84 [95% CI, 0.78 to 0.90] vs. AUC, 0.72 [95% CI, 0.66 to 0.79], χ2 P=0.03). Conclusions Seven factors were associated with poor neurological outcome following CVT. The INREvASC score increased prognostic accuracy compared to ISCVT-RS. Determining patients at highest risk of poor outcome in CVT could help in clinical decision making and identify patients for targeted therapy in future clinical trials.
