Influence of James Joyce upon Japanese Novelists Kyoko Miyata Since James Joyce was introduced in Japan, several novels have been written either directly or indirectly under his influence. As it is impossible to give here even a rough history of the relation between Joyce and our novelists, I limit my paper to some of its phases. First I argue the early reactions of our writers to A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses and secondly the influence of Finnegans Wake reflected on one of the contemporary Japanese novels and this will be the chief subject of my paper.In regard to the early reaction to A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, I will refer to the literary climate peculiar to Japan of those days when Ich- or I-novels were flourishing. Ulysses, with its stream of consciousness style, gave a strong impression upon our writers. Several novelists immediately responded and attempted the style. But it does not seem to have taken root. Perhaps the too illogical nature did not fit Japanese mentality.In 1991 and '93 the first complete translation of Finnegans Wake by Yanase was published. But most of our novelists as well as readers were bewildered or indifferent to this too difficult a work. In February 2006 a novel titled Afterglow appeared in a literary magazine. The author Nobuo Kojima had never read Finnegans Wake, but I recognize some affinities with it in this novel. Perhaps Kojima knew and was inspired by the literary and philosophical trend the source of which is Finnegans Wake. At least he was well acquainted with the literature of Claude Simon and Donald Barthelme who wrote under Joyce's influence. I presume that Afterglow is a reflection of the effect Finnegans Wake has had on the contemporary literature.

<P>BiB<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>6</SUB> (BIBO) crystal has been used for efficient second-harmonic generation (SHG) of a low-power femtosecond Er-fiber laser-amplifier system operating at 56 MHz. At the maximum input power of 65 mW, an internal conversion efficiency of 23% was achieved for SHG at 782 nm, with a pulse duration of 64 fs. A comparison with beta-BaB<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> reveals superior properties of BIBO for such ultrashort-pulse ultra-broadband SHG.</P>
Mobile & Collaborative Learning Development by A Concept of “Mobile-as-participation-platform”

A comment card system that is compatible with mobile phones (i-mode, ez-web, and SoftBank) was developed and has been used for four years since 2002 as part of university lectures with large attendance. As per the approach adopted in these lectures, the lecturer poses a question and the students connect to the comment card system Web site from their mobile phones and submit their opinions or questions. The submitted opinions and questions are categorized according to their themes and are displayed on a large LCD screen facing the students in a lecture room in real time. The lecturer then draws attention to these opinions and questions and uses them to develop the lecture. The system was further improved to enable pictures taken from mobile phones equipped with a digital camera to be submitted along with a title and a comment, which the SQL server automatically stores in a picture database. This enabled the students to search for, extract, and view the pictures and the accompanying comments submitted by themselves and others in a ubiquitous learning environment. The application of this system in actual mass lectures indicates that it can promote the exchange of opinions between students and assist those lectures that aim to realize knowledge sharing.
Design Method for Variable FIR Digital Filters with Some Variable Parameters Using WLS

In the field of measurement signal processing, we should often change the characteristic of the stopband instantaneously. Such the filter that can change the frequency response instantaneously is called variable digital filters (VDFs). In this paper, we propose a design method of FIR VDFs with some variable parameters. The filter with the quasi-chebyshev characteristic is obtained by using an iterative weighted least square (WLS) method. Moreover, a memory required for the designing filter coefficients in the proposed method is less than that of the conventional method using SDP. The usefulness of the proposed design method is verified through some examples.
Design of Cursive Handwriting Characters Using Esthetic Evaluation

This paper considers the problem for constructing characters from handwriting experiments. First, handwriting motions are measured using a pen-tablet and stored as a 3-dimensional time series data. Then, the data is used to construct characters by employing the ‘dynamic font’ model and the theory of smoothing splines based on the minimum jerk model. Also, we propose a method for designing cursive characters from an esthetic viewpoint. In addition, the problem for positioning optimally characters is considered. The effectiveness of the method is verified by experimental study.
