        For the commemoration of 40 years of Industrial Engineering in Korea, Ergonomics in Korea for the last 40 years are presented in this paper. Historical backgrounds, past achievements, and key historical landmarks are explained and analyzed. In addition, a keyword content analyses on the 1,005 titles from the research paper published from 1983 to 2014 are conducted to display the structural patterns of the changes of research focus of the ergonomics in Korea. Finally, some important perspectives with regard to the prospects for the future of ergonomics in Korea are also summarized.

        경사진 안창이 보행시 하지관절에 미치는 영향

        Despite the widespread use of laterally wedged insoles for patients with knee osteoarthritis and medially wedged insoles for controlling rearfoot pronation, an understanding of the effects of wedged insoles was limited and sometimes controversial. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of wedged insoles on the kinematics and kinetics of normal gait. Ten male subjects without history of lower limb disorders were recruited. Each subject performed four gait cycles under each of seven conditions; shod with 5$^{\circ}$, 8$^{\circ}$ and 15$^{\circ}$, 8$^{\circ}$ and 15$^{\circ}$ laterally wedged insoles. In order to determine statistical differences among seven conditions, the measured temporal spatial variables, angular displacements, joint moments, and ground reaction forces were compared with a one-way analysis of variance. Some significant changes induced by wedged insoles were apparent in joint moments and ground reaction forces. The medially wedged insole increased the laterally directed ground reaction force and varus moments at the ankle force and varus moments at the ankle and the knee.

      • Extended Fitts’ Law for Dual Task: Pointing on IVIS during Simulated Driving

        The purpose of this study is to identify a relationship between the time taken and the characteristics of touch key for touch-screen-based In-vehicle Information System (IVIS) and to suggest a new Fitts’ law formula that is added a driving speed parameter. Many studies already have shown that Fitts’ law is well fitted in various devices for primary tasks, but there is no study of Fitts’ law for secondary task in dual-task situation. However, task performer cannot fully pay attention to both the primary task and the secondary task, so the secondary task performance can be affected by the amount of attention for the primary task. Therefore Fitts’ law may not be applied for the secondary task. To verify this, we carried out an experiment that showed whether pointing task to touchscreen-based IVIS during driving is affected by driving speeds or not. In the experiment, 30 people were volunteered for participants and the participants carried out driving task and pointing on the screen of IVIS simultaneously. We measured the time to point a key on IVIS for every condition (3 driving speeds × 5 touch key sizes × 7 distances between steering wheel and touch key). As a result, there is an effect of driving speed on the pointing time. As we extended the index of difficulty of the conventional Fitts’ law formula by incorporating driving speed, we established an extended Fitts’ law formula for pointing on IVIS, which showed better accordance with dual task situation. This study can be evidence that secondary task performance is affected by degree of concentration on primary task, and the extended Fitts’ law formula can be useful to design interfaces of IVIS.

        외부 부하가 부과된 어깨 자세의 심물리학적 불편도 평가

        The purpose of this study is to quantitatively investigate perceived discomfort of complex shoulder postures with external loads and to propose a preliminary evaluation scheme of shoulder postures. Twelve healthy male adults participated in an experiment to rate their perceived discomfort of shoulder postures. The independent variables were shoulder flexion angle(45, 90 and 150$^{\circ}$), adduction/abduction angle(-30, -10, 0, 30 and 60$^{\circ}$), and external load(0, 1.5 and 3.0kg). The results revealed that the flexion angle, external load and their interaction significantly affected the perceived discomfort(p$<$0.05) but the effect of adduction/abduction angle on the discomfort was not significant(p$>$0.05). The effect of external load was much larger than that of any other factor with explaining about 81% of the total variation of discomfort scores. Based on the experimental results a preliminary scheme was presented to evaluate the stress of shoulder postures with external loads.

        한국 고령층의 일상생활 활동 불편도 분석

        The objective of this study is to investigate a perceived discomfort and cause of Korean elderly in various activities such as work and leisure as well as in daily activities. 120 subjects (30 female and 30 male for each age: the young and elderly) participated in the interview type of questionnaire. Each participant answered to 41 items of activities of daily living. The examination of each item was progressed with 3 steps: whether to do the activity or not, degree of activity discomfort, and the reasons or causes of discomfort. Borg's CR10 scale is used to measure the degree of discomfort of daily activities. As a result, there are differences for the proportion of performers between two age groups, except for essential activities such as individual maintenance and housekeeping. The elderly complained about their daily activities more than the young did, and the degree of discomfort of women was significantly larger than that of men with aging. There are seven items, the mean degree of discomfort of which is over three points for the elderly, and they showed significant difference between two age groups. It was the important reason that physical capacities such as muscle strength and suppleness are declined. The results showed the characteristics of Korean elderly in the whole daily activities. These will be used to understand various life styles of them and to propose a field or direction of study related to the aging.

        IT제품의 유니버설 디자인을 위한 사용실태조사

        This study investigated perceived discomfort and reasons related to use three information technology products (personal computer, mobile phone and digital television remote controller), and extracted the universal design factors. 240 people (30 females and 30 males for four age groups) participated in the one-to-one interview type of questionnaire, and replied to degree of discomfort at level of items and the reasons of discomfort at level of detailed elements for each product. As a result, almost all age groups answered that using input buttons of mobile phone and remote controller and watching display of mobile phone caused discomfort. Binary logistic regression of the detailed elements showed that response rate of discomfort mostly increased with age, except for specific elements such as shape of mouse and remote controller, and location of function button of mobile phone. Some of the detailed elements had high response rate of discomfort from all age groups. The age groups also showed similar tendency for the elements to select one alternative for the reason of discomfort, but not for sound volume and size of mobile phone and button sensitivity of remote controller. Finally, the universal design factors were extracted for each product based on the results, and divided into common factors and factors classified by the age group. Through this study, we identified using practices of various age groups and their demands for the products. It is expected that extracted detailed elements can be considered as important design factors to design the products universally.

      • 일상생활활동에 대한 생활시간 분석

        This study describes behavioral characteristics of Korean population over twenty years old in a variety of activities of daily living by analyzing the raw data of the time use survey provided by Statistics Korea (KOSTAT). Seven activities and forty four sub-activities of daily living were selected for analysis : personal care, employment, household care, family care, voluntary work and community participation, social life, recreation and leisure, and travel. In order to quantitatively understand how Korean adults spend their time for a day and how their lifestyle changes over time, we collected the time recorded by 3,673 respondents in three surveys over the past ten years (in 1999, 2004, and 2009). Then, we performed analysis of variance to compare the behavioral characteristics by user age and gender based on the mean time of each activity. The differences in behavior among user groups and over time could be used to design ergonomic products and services based on user experience, especially for universal design of housing and transportation facilities.

      • 지각 불편도에 근거한 손 위치에 따른 외부 부하의 영향

        This study aims to investigate the effects of hand position determined by hand distance and hand height, and external load on the whole body discomfort, and to develop a new external load classification scheme on the whole body discomfort. Eight healthy graduate male students participated in the experiment for measuring the whole body discomfort, in which two independent variables of hand position and external load were used. The magnitude estimation was employed to obtain participants’ whole body discomfort for varying postures. ANOVA revealed that hand position, external load and their interactions were statistically significant on the whole body discomfort at α = 0.01. On the basis of experiment, a new external load classification scheme was proposed, which was categorized by the magnitude of external load and postures adopted. It was found that compared to the existing observational methods, the developed external load classification scheme more precisely evaluates postural stress incurred by external load.
