The objective of this study was to compare ovulation rate, number of large ovarian follicles, and concentrations of plasma progesterone (P4) and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) between lame (n = 10) and non-lame (n = 10) lactating Holstein cows. The study was conducted in an organic dairy farm, and cows were evaluated by undertaking ultrasonography and blood sampling every 3 days from 30 days postpartum for a period of 34 days. Cows which became lame during the first 30 days postpartum experienced a lower ovulation rate determined by the presence of a corpus luteum (50% presence for lame cows and 100% for non-lame cows, p ≤ 0.05). The number of large ovarian follicles in the ovaries was 5 for lame cows and 7 for non-lame cows (p = 0.09). Compared to non-lame cows, lame cows had significantly lower (p ≤ 0.05) concentrations of plasma P4. Furthermore, NEFA concentrations were lower (p ≤ 0.05) in lame cows than in non-lame cows. It is concluded that lameness in postpartum dairy cows is associated with ovulation failure and lower concentrations of P4 and NEFA.

Ammonia emissions from composted swine manure and the resulting physicochemical changes were monitored to determine the effectiveness of adding alum and zeolite during the composting process, as well as the most effective addition method. The two amendments reduced ammonia emissions 85-92%, with the finished compost retaining three-fold more NH_4^+-_N than the unamended control. The addition of zeolite sequestered 44% of the retained NH_4^+-_N at zeolite exchange sites. The addition of amendments did not appear to significantly affect microbial activity, because the patterns of CO_2 emissions, total organic carbon (TOC) reduction, and the ratio of humic acid to TOC of amended and unamended composts were very similar. The final respiration rates and Solvita^® maturity index indicated that the finished compost was well matured and aged. Alum has a high potential to reduce ammonia emissions and concomitantly enhance fertilizer N value. Zeolite further reduces ammonia emissions, and improves fertilizer quality, by serving as a slow-release N source.

1950년대 미국에서 가상 가수, 즉 인간 신체적인 존재 대신 가상의 캐릭터로 자신을 보여주는 음악가들이 등장한 이후 음악 산업에서 애니메이션, 모션 캡쳐, 증강현실, 가상현실을 사용하기 시작하였다. 음악가와 예술가들이 함께 만든 이 애니메이션 가수들은 가수의 존재 영역의 경계를 넓혀주고, 현대의 실존하는 인간 가수들과 견줄 만한 수준의 음악적 성공을 이룰 수 있었다. 본 연구의 목적은 가상 가수의 음악시장에 대한 영향력을 포함한 역사적 맥락을 정리하고, 애니메이션을 주요 표현 수단으로 사용하여 성공한 새로운 유형의 가상 가수의 출현을 제안하는 것이다. 본 연구를 통해 가상 가수의 이론적 배경, 1920~1950년대 애니메이션 가상 가수에 대한 역사적 배경, 1950~2020년대까지 미국 · 영국 · 일본 · 한국의 애니메이션 가상 가수들의 영향력과 업적에 대해 조사 분석했다. 애니메이션의 가상 가수에 대한 역사 및 이론에 대한 연구 결과, 가상 존재에도 불구하고, 지난 70년 동안 실재 인간 가수들과 함께 성장하고 진화해왔으며, 인기도 측면에서 그들은 현재에도 발전, 성장하기 때문에, 미래에는 가상 가수들의 등장, 활동의 범위와 능력은 더욱 증가할 것으로 예상한다. Virtual singers, musicians that show themselves as fictional characters instead of human corporeal beings, had been pioneers in the use of animation, motion capture, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in the music industry ever since their emergence in 1950’s America. Created alongside by writers, musicians and artists, these animated singers had broken the barriers to what singers should be and what they should look like, and had achieved a level of musical success comparable to that of modern human performers. This study examined the theoretical background of fictional, cyber and virtual singers, provided a historical background of animation singers in the 1920s and 1950s, and a historical overview of animation technologies and achievements of American, British, Japanese, and Korean virtual singers from the 1950s to 2020s. The purpose of this study was to define a time-line including the achievements of virtual singers in the music industry, and to propose the emergence of a new type of singer who succeeded by using animation as the main means of expression. In addition, this study revealed that despite their virtual existence, animated performers have grown and evolved along side real human singers over the past 70 years, and the number of virtual singers is expected to increase in the near future due to their current growth in popularity.

We investigated the effect of a canola oil-supplemented diet on the metabolic state and diabetic renal function of a type I diabetes experimental model. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups: (1) normoglycemic+chow diet, (2) normoglycemic+a canola oil-supplemented chow diet, (3) diabetic+chow diet, and (4) diabetic+a canola oil-supplemented chow diet. For 15 weeks, animals were fed a diet of Purina rat chow alone or supplemented with 30% canola oil. Energetic intake, water intake, body weight, and adipose tissue fat pad were measured; renal function, electrolyte balance, glomerular filtration rate, and the plasmatic concentration of free fatty acids, cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose were evaluated. The mesenteric, retroperitoneal, and epididymal fat pads were dissected and weighed. The kidneys were used for lipid peroxidation (LP) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) quantifications. Diabetic rats fed with a canola oilsupplemented diet had higher body weights, were less hyperphagic, and their mesenteric, retroperitoneal, and epididymal fat pads weighed more than diabetic rats on an unsupplemented diet. The canola oil-supplemented diet decreased plasmatic concentrations of free fatty acids, triglycerides, and cholesterol; showed improved osmolarity, water clearances, and creatinine depuration; and had decreased LP and ROS. A canola oil-supplemented diet decreases hyperphagia and prevents lipotoxicity and renal dysfunction in a type I diabetes mellitus model.

Microwave ablation (MWA) for colorectal liver metastasis (CLM) has been traditionally considered inferior to surgery due to the higher rate of local recurrence. The study investigated whether a safety margin of 10 mm can improve local control in patients undergoing surgical MWA. Surgical MWA was used to treat 53 lesions in 22 patients with CLM at our Institution from June 2012 to June 2017. The patients’ mean age was 64.5 years, and the median size of the lesion was 16.5 mm (9–34 mm). MWA was associated with liver resection in 16 patients (72.7%). The median follow-up was 32.4 months. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors associated with tumor recurrence. Median ablation area was 36.6 mm2 (30–50 mm2). The complication rate was 22.7%. No local recurrence was observed during follow-up. Disease-free survival was 20 months (4.8–55.2 months). Univariate analysis revealed that the number of liver metastases and node-positive primary tumors were associated with tumor recurrence. Multivariate analysis revealed that node-positive primary tumor was the only factor significantly associated with tumor recurrence (p = 0.049; odds ratio, 12; 95% confidence interval, 1–143). When performed with a 10-mm safety margin, surgical MWA can lead to acceptable oncological outcomes with low morbidity. Therefore, it represents a good option in selected patients with CLM.

<P>T cell–based immunotherapy against melanoma-associated antigens can result in on-target/off-tumor cytotoxicity. SLC45A2, a protein overexpressed in melanoma compared with normal melanocytes, was identified as a T-cell target that may be less prone to inducing autoimmune side effects.</P><P>Cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL)–based immunotherapies have had remarkable success at generating objective clinical responses in patients with advanced metastatic melanoma. Although the melanocyte differentiation antigens (MDA) MART-1, PMEL, and tyrosinase were among the first melanoma tumor-associated antigens identified and targeted with immunotherapy, expression within normal melanocytes of the eye and inner ear can elicit serious autoimmune side effects, thus limiting their clinical potential as CTL targets. Using a tandem mass spectrometry (MS) approach to analyze the immunopeptidomes of 55 melanoma patient–derived cell lines, we identified a number of shared HLA class I–bound peptides derived from the melanocyte-specific transporter protein SLC45A2. Antigen-specific CTLs generated against HLA-A*0201- and HLA-A*2402–restricted SLC45A2 peptides effectively killed a majority of HLA-matched cutaneous, uveal, and mucosal melanoma cell lines tested (18/25). CTLs specific for SLC45A2 showed significantly reduced recognition of HLA-matched primary melanocytes that were, conversely, robustly killed by MART1- and PMEL-specific T cells. Transcriptome analysis revealed that SLC45A2 mRNA expression in normal melanocytes was less than 2% that of other MDAs, therefore providing a more favorable melanoma-to-melanocyte expression ratio. Expression of SLC45A2 and CTL sensitivity could be further upregulated in BRAF(V600E)-mutant melanoma cells upon treatment with BRAF or MEK inhibitors, similarly to other MDAs. Taken together, our study demonstrates the feasibility of using tandem MS as a means of discovering shared immunogenic tumor-associated epitopes and identifies SLC45A2 as a promising immunotherapeutic target for melanoma with high tumor selectivity and reduced potential for autoimmune toxicity. <I>Cancer Immunol Res; 5(8); 618–29. ©2017 AACR</I>.</P>

This paper reviews current status of the unified approach known as integrated safetyassessment (ISA), as well as the associated SCAIS (simulation codes system for ISA) computerplatform. These constitute a proposal, which is the result of collaborative actionamong the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN), University of Madrid (UPM), and NFQ SolutionsS.L, aiming to allow independent regulatory verification of industry quantitative riskassessments. The content elaborates on discussions of the classical treatment of time inconventional probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) sequences and states importantconclusions that can be used to avoid systematic and unacceptable underestimation of thefailure exceedance frequencies. The unified ISA method meets this challenge by couplingdeterministic and probabilistic mutual influences. The feasibility of the approach is illustratedwith some examples of its application to a real size plant.
